Survey Analysis
1.
2. WHY DID I DECIDE TO CREATE A SURVEY FOR PART OF MY AUDIENCE RESEARCH?
Despite a survey being a very general way to collect results, I believe that it is a very effective way to gain an
understanding of what people think about a certain topic, so I created an eight question long survey and sent it out for
people to answer. I used Survey Monkey to create this survey, and these are the questions that I used in my
Questionnaire:
1) Which of the following age categories do you fall under?
2) If you had to choose, which music genre would you say is your preferred style to listen to?
3) Baring in mind your selected preferred genre, could you please tell me who your favourite band/artist are?
4) Have you ever seen a music video?
5) Have you watched a music video in the last six months?
6) When you watch a music video, which of the following areas do you believe makes that video more interesting?
7) When it comes to 'Lip Syncing' in a music video, how much do you believe is an acceptable amount?
8) Which elements do you think would contribute to making a good music video?
3. I had contemplated including a question that
asks for the persons gender. However, I feel
that this is irreverent information, and I would
gain more from knowing the answerers ages
rather than the sex that they are. Plus, some
people do not
feel comfortable answering that kind of question, and Twenty One Pilots are a band that appeal to all
genders, not just a specific one (like One Direction for example, where the fans are predominantly Girls,
and Boy fans are rarely associated with the band). In relation to the age question, I felt that if I was too
specific with the choices, then the survey would look cluttered and be quite extensive to look at. If I was
to be more specific however (have an answer for every age up to a certain amount) then I would get more
precise set of results, but I would like to create a product that appeals to a varied age of people, rather
than just a small proportion of ages.
QUESTION ONE - EXPLANATION
4. QUESTION ONE - ANALYSIS
As you can see through my results on the left, 53 people filled out
my survey, and the majority of people fell under the 30+ bracket; 28
our of 53. I think that this happened because my parents shared my
survey on Facebook in order to provide me with more results, and
most of their friends are under this bracket as well. Also, 20 out of
53 of the contributors fall under the 14-20 bracket. This is
beneficial, because this has enabled me to see what people who are
around a similar age to me think. And, 5 out of 53 fell under the 21-
30 category. Overall with this question, I am very happy with the
results I collated. Plus, baring Twenty One Pilots in mind, their
songs do have quite deep and meaningful concepts, which people
who are in the 0-13 bracket may not understand. I would like my
video to appeal to everyone, however in terms of concept I think a
younger audience may be slightly oblivious, and not appreciate the
video as much as others; who are older.
5. QUESTION TWO - EXPLANATION
Although I am focusing on the Rock genre, I was curious to find out the variety of people who has answered my
survey from the music perspective, and this is why I included a question that stated the survey takers preferred
music genre.
6. QUESTION TWO - ANALYSIS
Putting aside the fact that one of my contributors
skipped this question, I was happy to see that the most
popular answer for this question was Rock; as this is
my chosen genre. The Other option was also quite
popular, and I noticed for this response that people
mainly commented sub-genres, which is understandable
(responses are on the next slide). Pop and Alternative
were also quite popular amongst the survey takers,
followed by Hip Hop/R&B, and then Electronic.
Classical and Jazz were not selected by anyone, and I
believe that this is because these two genres are not as
main or familiar with people in modern day music.
Also, I did ask a few of my friends to fill out my
survey, and most of them are fans of Rock Music.
7. QUESTION TWO – FURTHER ANALYSIS
You can see to the right that mostly sub genres were stated for the Other category, as I
previously mentioned on the slide before.
8. QUESTION THREE - EXPLANATION
This was another curiosity based question. Plus, I wanted to see if anyone happened to associate ‘Twenty
One Pilots’ with being their favourite musical band/artist.
9. QUESTION THREE - ANALYSIS
As you can see from the answers
provided, there are a variety of
bands and artists listed as
people’s favourites, and this
shows the versatility of the
people that my survey reached.
10. QUESTION FOUR - EXPLANATION
I felt that this was an important question, because then the survey taker would know the various elements that go into
a video for a track, and they may have also established what factors they particularly like to see.
11. QUESTION FOUR - ANALYSIS
Unfortunately, there was one person who took my survey that claimed to have never seen a music video before, but
the remaining 52 have, so this was a good result for me and my research.
12. QUESTION FIVE - EXPLANATION
In order to find out if the survey takers have seen more recent videos, I included this question. Someone may have
seen a video from the 90’s, but not a more recent 2015 video. I believe that this may have an impact on my results,
due to the fact genre conventions have changed over time, and videos are constantly developing over time.
13. QUESTION FIVE - ANALYSIS
Three people out of fifty three answered that they have not seen a music video in the past six months, which is fair
enough again, as the majority have seen one more recently.
14. QUESTION SIX - EXPLANATION
These elements are taken from one of David Goodwin’s theories regarding what a typical music video may be
based around; Narrative, Concept or Performance elements. I wanted to know what the public preferred videos to
be based around and what they felt made them more interesting, so I included this question and enabled the
survey takers to only select one answer.
15. QUESTION SIX - ANALYSIS
As you can see, the majority answered that they prefer a variety of elements in a music video to make it more
interesting, which reflects on my personal opinions about music videos, so this feedback was very helpful for me, as
at times I felt my video could possible end up being too busy and ineffective as a result.
16. QUESTION SEVEN - EXPLANATION
I personally do not like a lot of lip sync in a music video, and I wanted to find out if anyone else had the same view
as me. I created four ranks as you can see, starting with mostly lip syncing, and going down to no lip syncing at all.
17. QUESTION SEVEN - ANALYSIS
My results reflect on my personal preference, which was very nice to find out. Most of the survey takers stated that
they prefer videos with no lip syncing at all, followed my half lip sync, half not, then very little lip syncing, and
lastly, mostly lip syncing. I believe that having a video full of lip syncing makes it all entirely about the artist
themselves, and really I believe that it should be about the track and the meaning of it; not the artist.
18. QUESTION EIGHT - EXPLANATION
My final question I believe is an essential pin point for my research. I devised a list of elements that I have previously
seen in music videos, and I collated them into a multiple answer question for the audience to select. I have my own
personal preferences obviously, but I would like my product to appeal to a variety of people; rather than just myself.
19. QUESTION EIGHT - ANALYSIS
You can see through my results that I received a variety of answers for this question, which is very good for me. As I suspected,
most people said they liked for the video to have a story line, as well as the video having some kind of conceptual significance.
Many people however, didn't seem keen on the idea of having a Protagonist and Antagonist, which reflects my personal beliefs
again, and people don’t seem to like the idea of the audio stopping during the video.
20. CONCLUSION
To conclude this analysis, I found that creating this survey was
essential for my Primary Audience Research, and I not believe that I
will be able to create a music video that will appeal to more of a
variety of people based on the feedback I received, and essentially
create an overall better product to the highest possible quality.
