2. Let’s introduce ourselves:
We are teachers at the 53rd Lyceum of Athens, Greece, in
the southeast corner of our common home, Europe.

3. Athens is the historical capital of
Europe, with a long history, dating from
the first settlement in the Neolithic age.
In the 5th Century BC (the “Golden Age of
Pericles”) the city’s values and civilization
acquired a universal significance.
Over the years, a multitude of conquerors
occupied Athens, and erected unique,
splendid monuments - a rare historical
palimpsest.
In 1834, it became the capital of the
modern Greek state and in two
centuries since it has become an
attractive modern metropolis with
unrivalled charm.

6. Academy of Athens, a fine example of
Neoclassical architecture in modern Greece.

7. A large part of the town’s historic centre has been converted
into a 3-kilometre pedestrian zone (the largest in Europe),
leading to the major archaeological sites (“archaeological
park”), reconstructing – to a large degree – the ancient
landscape.

8. Thanks to its rich morphology Athens has plenty of places
where you can admire stunning panoramic views of the city.
Romantic or not, let yourself be captivated by the Athenian
cityscape as seen from above.

9. The Acropolis of Athens, cradle of the Western Civilization.

10. Our school is located in a neighborhood of this historic city called
Sepolia, approx. 15 minutes from the Acropolis using the Metro
railway. It is one of the most depressed neighborhoods, characterized
by high unemployment rates and poor public facilities. Nevertheless it
is one of the few places in Athens that you can still feel what is like to
live in a community where people really care for each other.

11. As far as our school is concerned, someone could say that it is a
relatively typical secondary education school in terms of the
facilities, the number of students that attend the lessons and the
number of teachers that work there.

12. It is equipped with two labs set up for Physics/Chemistry/Biology
and two labs for ICT lessons. It has also a small auditorium which
is used during the school festivals.
Our school has its own Library and a special classroom for
teaching History using object lessons (maps and projector).

13. Taking chance from the Erasmus+ we have adjusted 2 classrooms to
the needs of this Program where our students can work in teams
(Cooperative Learning) upon the subjects of concern, using
computers which were donated to the school especially for the needs
of the Educational Programs that are implemented in our school.

14. Putting aside the facility, let’s talk about people: Every year almost
300 students attend the lessons. They all come from the
neighborhood by the school which is densely inhabited. Many of them
are participating in educational programs with great enthusiasm. The
25 teachers of all areas of expertise are headed by our Principal Mr.
Stoupakis.

15. Regarding projects about Cultural Heritage we could point out the
school’s participation, for the third consecutive year, to the relevant
Educational Program organized by the cultural organization of the
Municipality of Athens under the name of “The Kid, The City and
the Monuments”.

16. This innovative program’s
target is to encourage the
youth to protect and
highlight the city’s cultural
heritage, it’s monuments
and public spaces, through
actions of active citizenship
and inter school
collaboration in cooperation
with the Faculty of Fine Arts
and relevant Cultural

17. What is more, the teachers that are
implementing this program in our
school, have been assigned from the
Organizers the task of preparing
training courses for the teachers of
other schools that are new to this
program.

18. Another similar project implemented in our school in collaboration with
the Non Profit Organization “Diazoma” is aiming to the preservation
and touristic promotion of ancient greek and roman theatres in
Greece through various educational actions in a volunteering basis.

19. Finally, we would like to mention that our Erasmus+ KA2 adventure
began in 2015-18 joining in a project about “Entrepreneurship in
Secondary Schools”, coordinated by ITE G.B. Bodoni in Parma (ITA)
with the participation of schools in Lieto (FIN), Marseilles (FRA), and
Bielsko Biala (POL).

20. For the current school year 53rd Lyceum of Athens is coordinating
a 2 year (2018-20) Erasmus+ KA2 project regarding “Circular
Economy” in cooperation with school partners in Parma (ITA), in
Marl (DEU) and in Lieto (FIN),

21. while being a partner in the Erasmus+ KA2 project Odyssey
(Oxford Debates in Science Education, 2018-21) coordinated by
the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in
cooperation with scientific institutes in Greece, Estonia and Serbia.
