1. 2016 GORGAS MEMORIAL LIBRARY SURVEY
EVALUATION OF RESULTS
EFFECTIVENESS OF EXISTING TOOLS – RESPONSES FROM THE SURVEY:
Evaluation: Based on the ratio of responses of Don’t Know/NA to positive responses (Excellent, Good, Fair), awareness needs to be
raised about tools which are made available through the Gorgas Memorial Library’s website.
In-depth training of EndNote and Web of Science can be conducted by instructors from Thomson Reuters, the publisher of
these tools. The Reference and Instruction Services Librarian can give limited training on EndNote and Web of Science.
Training videos for EndNote are currently linked under Training Resources on the library’s website. Additional training tools
from Thomson Reuters (e.g., Quick Reference Guides PDF) can be linked by WRAIR’s webmaster, if permitted

2. Links to library training on DCO Connect need to be deleted by WRAIR’s webmaster, as DCO Connect has been replaced by
DCS; hence, the material via DCO Connect is no longer available. Training materials to replace what is currently listed via
DCO Connect (i.e., Athens: An Introduction, and Overview of GML OneSearch) can be composed by the Reference and
Instruction Services Librarian in an accessible format (e.g., PowerPoint), then posted under Training Resources by WRAIR’s
webmaster. Instructional material for GML OneSearch can be composed then posted after access to GML OneSearch has
been regained
Training for resources that provide access to online journals (SFX, MRMC E-Portal, AMEDD Virtual Library) can be conducted
during on-site sessions at the library by the Reference and Instruction Services Librarian, as well as on a one-to-one basis
The satisfaction level for PubMed is very high; still, as WRAIR/NMRC experiences a high number in the hiring of new
researchers, training for PubMed should be provided on a regular basis, e.g., in the fall and spring. In-depth training of
PubMed can be conducted by instructors from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine
The majority of registered users for SciFinder are within the Experimental Therapeutics Branch, which funds SciFinder. It was
indicated that staff within the Experimental Therapeutics Branch have no immediate need for training on SciFinder; hence,
training for SciFinder can be waived. SciFinder can be contacted to see if it is permissible to link training materials on
SciFinder’s website (Overview Presentation PDF, Introduction to SciFinder HTML) to the Gorgas Memorial Library’s Training
Resources. If SciFinder grants permission to link their training materials, WRAIR’s webmaster would have to be contacted to
see if SciFinder’s training materials can be linked to the Gorgas Memorial Library’s website
The library archivist could compose general informational material regarding the historical archives. This information could
be posted on the library’s website, under Historical Resources, by WRAIR’s webmaster
3. IMPORTANCE OF LIBRARY SERVICES – RESPONSES FROM THE SURVEY:
Evaluation: Overall, the satisfaction level forlibrary services is very strong.
Currently on the library’s homepage are:
o a link to the Loansome Doc login and registration homepage
o clickable and sendable PDF request forms for interlibrary loan
o a brief description of and a request form for literature searches
o a link to information about bibliometrics
An updated literature search request form was composed by the Reference and Instruction Services Librarian. It can be
linked as a replacement for the current form by WRAIR’s webmaster. The list of databases needs to be updated, as BRD is no
longer available – this information was included in a suggested change to be submitted to and changed by WRAIR’s
webmaster (refer to IN ADDITION TO THE EVALUATION OF SURVEY RESULTS at the end of the survey evaluation).
Information needs to be available regarding bibliometric services and the Smadel Special Collection, as there is a high
number of Don’t know/NA responses to each. The Systems Librarian can inform users as to bibliometrics, as it is her
responsibility. Patrons have limited access to the Smadel Special Collection; however, an informational handout could be
composed for distribution and posting on the library’s website regarding subject matter and access.

4. IMPORTANCE OF RESOURCES CURRENTLY NOT AVAILABLE - RESPONSES FROM THE SURVEY:
Evaluation: There is a response rate of over 50% for Very Important and Important regarding these tools. Both tools include
holdings to the library’s collection. In addition, GML OneSearch includes access to articles in online journals that the library
subscribes to, as well as links to electronic books. Access to both the Online Public Access Catalog and GML OneSearch has been
blocked for close to one year. The response rates of Don’t know/NA may be directly linked to the lack of access; also, Don’t
Know/NA responses may be from respondents who started working at WRAIR/NMRC after access to these tools was blocked . Both
tools are valuable and need to be reestablished as soon as is possible. Once access is regained, instruction for using both can be
included in usage of the library’s resources.

5. INTEREST IN TRAINING FOR NCBI (NATIONAL CENTER FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY INFORMATION) RESOURCES BESIDES
PUBMED/MEDLINE - RESPONSES FROM THE SURVEY:
Evaluation: As there is approximately a 50% response rate of Yes, instruction for NCBI resources should be conducted. Training for
NCBI resources can be performed by instructors from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. Responses as to subject areas
for training in NCBI resources are listed in the following survey question.

6. TRAINING FOR SUBJECT AREAS IN NCBI RESOURCES, BASED ON RESPONSES OF INTEREST -
5=HIGHEST LEVEL OF INTEREST, 1=LOWEST LEVEL OF INTEREST - RESPONSES FROM THE SURVEY:
Evaluation: As expected, the total number of responses for each subject area varies, depending on interest. Based on the
combination of highest levels of interest (3 through 5) and Interested, the subject areas listed by rank of overall interest are:
Genes
Sequence Analysis
Proteins
Chemical
DNA
Instruction for these subject areas can be coordinated with instructors from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine.

7. SUBJECT AREAS OF INTEREST TO ORDER MATERIALS FOR THE LIBRARY
Subject areas of interest for ordering books, journals, and electronic books are listed by individual respondents in the Raw Data. Key
subject areas of interest include: biomedical engineering, traumatic brain injury, behavioral and social sciences, tropical medicine.
Evaluation: Collection development can be conducted by library staff for ordering titles of interest. Respondents who listed specific
subject areas in the Raw Data can be notified after materials are processed for the library’s collection.
KEY AREAS OF DISSATISFACTION:
The library website not being accessible via the WRAIR and NMRC Intranet homepages
The inability of users to submit their own requests for interlibrary loan
Long periods of being unable to access online journals
The difficulty of borrowing books
Evaluation:
The WRAIR Intranet may be redone in the near future, as per WRAIR’s webmaster. This task may result in the library’s
website becoming accessible via the Intranet. As per the webmaster, there is only a WRAIR Intranet and not an NMRC
Intranet
Library users currently can utilize the National Library of Medicine's Loansome Doc to submit interlibrary loan requests.
Loansome Doc is linked on the library's homepage, and registration is free. Research will be done as to possible other
solutions to the ability of users being able to request their own interlibrary loan requests
There has been an ongoing problem with accessibility of certain online journals. This is primarily due to issues with FEDLINK
paying for subscriptions. In addition, unknown entities have blocked access to resources such as Ovid and Wiley journals.
Also, it may be that library users are unaware of how to access online journals. The latter can be addressed by instructional
sessions conducted in the library by the Reference and Instruction Services Librarian, as well as on a one-to-one basis
The difficulty of borrowing books is related to ongoing access problems with Voyager
IN ADDITION TO THE EVALUATION OF SURVEY RESULTS: Several suggested changes to Gorgas Memorial Library’s webpages have
been compiled by the Reference and Instruction Services Librarian. These changes would have to be implemented by WRAIR’s
webmaster. One holdup, however, is regaining access to GML OneSearch and the Online Public Access Catalog, as there are several
references to these tools within WRAIR’s webpages; hence, if access is regained, then the links can remain, but if access cannot be
regained, the links will have to be removed until access is reestablished.
