Excavation
         General Inspection of Jobsite:


 Excavations, adjacent areas, and protective systems inspected by
  a competent person daily before the start of work.
 Spoils, materials, and equipment set back at least two feet from
  the edge of the excavation.
 Barriers provided at all remotely located excavations, wells, pits,
  shafts, etc.
 Warning vests or other highly visible clothing provided and worn
  by all employees exposed to public vehicular traffic.
 Utility companies contacted and/or utilities located.
 Exact location of utilities marked.
 Underground installations protected, supported, or removed when
  excavation is open.
Means of Egress
   Lateral travel to means of egress no greater than 25 feet in excavations
    four feet or more in depth.

   Ladders used in excavations secured and extended three feet above the
    edge of the trench.
   Structural ramps used by employees designed by a competent person.



                           Wet Conditions:

   Water removal equipment monitored by a competent person.
   Surface water or runoff diverted or controlled to prevent accumulation in
    the excavation.
   Inspections made after every rainstorm or other hazard-increasing
    occurrence.

  • 1. Production and Safety starts from the ground; up to the ridge of the roof.  Road base; emergency access  Grade around all buildings; allow for adequate access for rough terrain lifts.
  • 2. Housekeeping  Broom sweep before sub-trades start their work.  No EATING in buildings.  No SMOKING in buildings.

  • 4. CAS Signage  CAZ Signage  Barricade to building access.
  • 5. Proper Access to 2 nd Level
  • 6. CAZ Requirement – Warning Line  Red warning line six feet from the exposed edge; continuous along the building perimeter.  One monitor per six men.  Workers must have the sticker on their HH designating the level where they are allowed to work.
  • 7. Handrail – install immediately when wall is raised.
  • 8. Proper Access to Landings  Supply adequate handrail.  Provide safe access to next level.  Maintain clear walkway; free of trip and fall hazards.
  • 9. Access to Roof  Provide an extension ladder or properly constructed site-built ladder for access to roof.  The opening is a minimum of 6’ from the leading edge.
  • 10. Stocking Materials  Handrails must be maintained while stocking the building with materials.  Good Housekeeping practices.

  • 14. Excavation General Inspection of Jobsite:  Excavations, adjacent areas, and protective systems inspected by a competent person daily before the start of work.  Spoils, materials, and equipment set back at least two feet from the edge of the excavation.  Barriers provided at all remotely located excavations, wells, pits, shafts, etc.  Warning vests or other highly visible clothing provided and worn by all employees exposed to public vehicular traffic.  Utility companies contacted and/or utilities located.  Exact location of utilities marked.  Underground installations protected, supported, or removed when excavation is open.

Means of Egress  Lateral travel to means of egress no greater than 25 feet in excavations four feet or more in depth.  Ladders used in excavations secured and extended three feet above the edge of the trench.  Structural ramps used by employees designed by a competent person. Wet Conditions:  Water removal equipment monitored by a competent person.  Surface water or runoff diverted or controlled to prevent accumulation in the excavation.  Inspections made after every rainstorm or other hazard-increasing occurrence.

This interpretation further defines the above standard. I highlighted the areas that pertain to Group I. We will get into Groups III & IV latter. Group II does not pertain to wood-stick framed buildings. The items in red are my comments.
