Magento Commerce was first released by a small web development agency over ten years when they saw first-hand what a challenge it was for companies like them to build unique eCommerce sites. They created an open source platform that gives developers the flexibility to create meaningful shopping experiences while building a global community that drives down merchant costs and fosters innovation. Amid the rise of cloud-based software Magento needed to keep pace with more complex merchant needs and heightened shopper expectations. In this session learn how Magento, with the help of Partners like Fastly, evolved into a cloud-based platform without sacrificing their commitment to open software, flexibility, and the community.

Hi - I am Doug Mciver, Director of Product Management at Magento, an Adobe Company.
Magento is an open-source eCommerce platform that is used by merchants of all different sizes and types. We recently joined Adobe.
I first joined Magneto in 2010. Since the company was founded I think there have been 9 or 10 different phases of its evolution.
Too day I’m going to talk about 3 of them that stand out to me.
I want to tell the story of how Magento moved from being a deployed, on-premise open source application to having a Cloud-based offering and the role Fastly played in that transition.
The first phase is about flexibility
Magento launched in 2007 to be a platform that allowed developers to more quickly and more easily create ecommerce sites. The company that created Magento had been an agency that developed commerce sites for small businesses. And they weren’t happy with the software out in the market they had to work with. It was buggy and not very well maintained.
So Magento set off to create software that would help others like them to develop ecommerce sites. And they launched Magento in 2007.
Magento was originally deployed or on premise software.
Magento has had tremendous success. It provides a feature-rich, highly configurable, developer-friendly eCommerce platform.
A key part of Magento’s success is due to its Flexibility. Magento was designed so common requests could be easily configured. Many of the common requests that Magento had received building websites could be configured in the application
Then developers could easily extend the platform. Developers could satisfy merchant requests. The Flexibility allowed developers to package up their customizations and for third-party vendors to integrate into platform.
In fact, one of the founders of Magento used to talk about leaving holes . These holes were important because they allowed others to fill those holes.
This philosophy and the need for a better ecommere platform fostered an ecommerce ecosystem to grow around Magento.
Developers provided services and packaged their add ons.
At the same time Magento was thriving, there were changes going. While Magento was improving our platform, cloud computing was becoming more common and more accepted.
Our customers were asking about how to streamline their operations.
We set out to consider how to launch a cloud option, we wanted to make sure we maintained the Flexibility. We wanted to minimize the difference in features and developer-experience between our on premise version and our cloud edition.
Which brings us to our second theme of Simplicity and why we launched a cloud offering.
eCommerce is not easy. It is not simple. Each merchant has their own business process, their own systems , and their own way that they want to present themselves to their customers. There are all of the back office systems that you need to tie into. There are all of the other service providers you need to integrate to like marketing or payment services. Then there all all of the ways that merchants try to improve the interactions with their customers. Be that presenting their brand, or mobile apps or give business buyers the same experiences that consumers have come to expect. It is not easy.
And when you then consider all the different verticals that use ecommerce and all the different customer-specific request for, the problem grows further
And Magento had always focused on making those challenges possible.
But our challenge was how do we make that easier. Let the merchants focus on what was going to different. Not on the plumbing or the foundation.
So how do you maintain Flexibility but make it easier to launch and deploy sites?
We looked at what we could integrate and bundle with Magento to make the experience easier.
At its core is the same eCommerce software but we bundled it with a high-availability architecture using cloud servers. We included the tools to deploy Magento the environment. And tools to understand how the application is performing from both a business perspective and a technology perspective.

Magento had chosen to include Vanish as part of the technology stack. The full page cached was cached in Varnish. Using Varnish allowed Magento to improve its scalability and performance. We tagged all content so as merchandising and marketing changes occurred, we could purge the changed content.
When we launched our first cloud customer, it was an amazing experience to have had this vision of how to move forward and for our team to have been able to realize it. Choosing the right partners had been key to realizing this transition
So that brings us to agility.
And this phase is one that I think we are still going through.
Moving to a Cloud-based model has both brought us closer to our customer and allowed to be more responsive.
