Value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. Tints are lighter values made by mixing color with white, while shades are darker values made by mixing color with black. Contrast occurs when two elements are different, such as opposing colors or sizes of text and background, and it serves to attract the eye, organize content, and create focus. Simultaneous contrast is an illusion created through the juxtaposition of different values.
6. The lightness or darkness of a color is called its value.
• Tints are light values that are made by mixing a color with white. For
example, pink is a tint of red (red and white), and gray is a tint of black
(black and white). Tones are created by mixing with a shade of gray
and possibly just muting the color, but not changing the value.
• Shades are dark values that are made by mixing a color with black.
Maroon is a shade of red, and navy is a shade of blue.
10. What is it? Contrast happens when two elements on a page are different. For example
it happens when two opposing colors are used in a design between the text and the
background or in the size and style of type. Our eyes like contrast.
11. • To achieve contrast the elements must be completely
different. But what does contrast really do?
1. Attracts the eye
2. Organizes content/information
3. Creates focus
