S U S T A I N A B L E S Y N E R G I E S • Sustainability is a major driver for change and creates new paradigms every organization needs to adapt to. • Environmental issues are highly complex and spread over several scales of time and place. Uncertainty and emotions prevail. • Environmental assets are a shared patrimony. Regulation is key to ensure efficient use and fair access to the natural resources • Sustainability requires managers to work across traditional boundaries and lines of responsibilities. The answer is clearly “no” because: • the scope of topics to address is extremely wide • the design of solutions is very much context depend • the perception of concerns varies a lot • the uncertainty affecting both science and data. The way towards sustainable development is a collective “learning by doing” process. Every organizations has a role to play in this experimentation and can expect some benefits in return. 2. S U S T A I N A B L E S Y N E R G I E S • Focus on water and waste issues. • Information maps to structure the data • System thinking tools to connect the expertise involved and to find out leverage points for change . • A lot of attention is given to EU policy circles since: – It is a major policy forum and regulatory body – It attracts many stakeholders voicing concerns in Brussels – EU programs provide funding opportunities to develop proposals. • Project management is carried out according to good practices (i.e. PRINCE2). 3.
