SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
Yes – No Questions, Affirmative & Negative Statements
Simple Present is used to express the idea that
an action is repeated or usual. The action can be a
habit, a hobby, a daily event, a scheduled event or
something that often happens.
STRUCTURES
To make statements or questions with the personal pronouns I, YOU, WE & THEY,
we used the following structures.
Affirmative Statements
𝑆𝑢𝑏𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 + 𝑉𝑒𝑟𝑏 + 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡
For example:
 I play tennis at school on Mondays.
 You make delicious cakes, cookies and pies.
 Mary and I have lot of homework to do and it’s all for tomorrow.
Negative Statements
𝑆𝑢𝑏𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 + 𝑑𝑜𝑛′ 𝑡 + 𝑉𝑒𝑟𝑏 + 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡
For Example
 I don’t get up early during the week.
 You don’t play videogames in the afternoons.
 We don’t have breakfast in the morning.
Note: Don’t is short for Do not
Yes - No Questions
𝐷𝑜 + 𝑆𝑢𝑏𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 + 𝑉𝑒𝑟𝑏 + 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡?
For Example
o Do you go to school in the evening?
Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.
o Do your friends make phone calls at night?
Yes, they do. / No, they don’t.
o Do you and your classmates study together?
Yes, we do. / No, we don’t.
STRUCTURES
To make statements or questions with the personal pronouns HE, SHE & IT, we
used the following structures.
Affirmative Statements
𝑆𝑢𝑏𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 + 𝑉𝑒𝑟𝑏 + 𝑠/𝑒𝑠 + 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡
For example:
My mother cleans the house on weekends.
He goes shopping after class.
My brother takes an English class on Saturdays.
Note: We just add “s/es” to the verb in affirmative statements, in the third person
SPELLING RULES
Hay algunas reglas que te permiten determinar si se le agrega “s” o “es” a un verbo, las mas importantes son:
1. For most verbs: add –s.
2. For verbs ending in s, ss, sh, ch, x or z: add –es.
3. For verbs ending in a consonant and y: change y to i and add –es.
4. For verbs ending in a vowel and y: add –s.
Hay verbos que tienen terminaciones que no caen en las reglas anteriores, los mas importantes son:
Eat - Eats Drive - Drives Sing - Sings Drink - Drinks
Watch - Watches Fix - Fixes Kiss - Kisses Brush - Brushes
Study - Studies Fly - Flies

Negative Statements

For Example
Maria doesn’t read the newspaper.
She doesn’t play soccer on weekends.
Luis doesn’t have a big breakfast in the morning.
Note: Doesn’t is short for Does not
