In 90’s Indian cities of Delhi & Mumbai started implementing
natural gas vehicle programmes
A study assessed the impact of various pollution control measures on air quality trends in
Delhi over a period of 15 years (1990-2005) and found that of all the different interventions
made to combat pollution in the city…
CNG
• Conversion of buses to CNG had maximum impact helping
to reduce CO, SO2, NO2 levels.
• As on date, around 6,000 CNG Buses ply in Delhi, targeting
11,000 as directed by Hon’ble High Court

In 1983, 10,400 sq km of area declared Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ)
& polluting units prohibited.
Series of actions taken to clean Taj, including
bringing in CNG to replace coal.
The industry came into limelight in 1996, when Supreme Court of India
ordered 292 coal based factories in the TTZ
to switch to cleaner alternative fuel such as natural gas.
GAIL played a crucial role to supply gas to this industrial cluster.
The Firozabad industry cluster, located about 40 km from Agra, uses
open pot furnaces to utilise glass as raw material for processing into
bangles using coal /wood.

Saving Fuel by Transportation by Pipelines instead of
using Trucks: helps in fuel, GHG Emissions, time & money
saving. Our LPG pipelines led reduction of GHG emissions by
9,656 tCO2e/year by shifting of LPG transport from road to
pipeline from late ‘90s. Approx. reduction of 0.25 Million
tCO2e over lifetime of 25 years.
Cooling of Feed Gas to GPU from low temperature RLNG going in South
Gujarat Pipeline: utilizes the cold generated due to pressure reduction of RLNG
for cooling of feed gas supplied to GPU.
Vapor Recovery from LPG Spheres: installed for recovering LPG &
Propane Vapors during scheduled inspection. ( Approx. 200 MT)

Partnered with TERI for “Delhi to Paris: Corporate Vision of
Climate Change” : to be released by Hon’ble MoS (I/C)
Environmental, Forest and Climate Change COP-21. As
Chapter lead, GAIL propagated that natural gas can act as a
bridge fuel as India gears up for the transition from
economy based on coal and oil to renewables.
Going forward, GAIL would like to play a leading role in
collaborating with other oil and gas players for making a positive
impact of the sector in respect of sustainability and climate change.
GAIL is following in letter and spirit the mantra “Going Green
makes sound Business Sense”.
