READING AS A MEANS OF
RAISING PUPILS` MOTIVATION
       FOR SPEAKING
  AT LESSONS OF ENGLISH

                Alexander Soroka
               a teacher of English
           Ivatsevichi District Lyceum
There are typically three goals that
readers share:
Reading effectively;
Increasing reading rate;
Understanding more of what they
 read.
Active reading strategies
                Previewing
                Predicting
          Skimming and scanning
         Guessing from the context
               Paraphrasing
                  SQ3R:

Q – Questions ( for the headings to
    describe who, when, where, why,
     explain or compare )
 R – Read ( the text )
 R – Recite ( talking the text out )
R – Review ( the material again and again )

Dealing with gaps
Arranging the story
•
• ___ A In the evening I had to help my grandmother feed the animals again and collect hens` eggs. I
even learned to milk the cows and I was very proud of myself. My grandparents had a barn behind the
house and I often used to sleep the night there. I took my sleeping-bag and a torch and slept in the hay.
That was an unforgettable experience. After such holidays I always returned to the town refreshed and
    healthy.
•
• ___ D Nowadays I do not spend the summer in the country any longer. My grandparents have grown old
and they are not strong enough to work in the fields or to look after cows, pigs and hens. I visited them last
year but it was not the same. The village has grown and developed. You can no longer see horses in the
    fields but modern agricultural machines.
•
• ___B The forest I loved so much has been cut down for timber. Once a wonderful place to go on
holidays, the village has become modernized and lost its natural beauty. I miss the good old days and feel
sorry that time goes by so quickly.
•
• ___E When I was young, I used to spend the summer on my grandparents` farm. I loved those days so
carefree and enjoyable. There were so many things to do and to see that I was never bored. I used to get up
at sunrise and go for a long walk around a meadow. I had a dog and together we used to wander while the
rest of the world was sleeping.
•
• ___C In the morning my grandmother used to feed the chickens and other farm animals and my
grandfather turned out the cattle. Then together we went to a field to reap the harvest. We usually worked in
the field until lunch time but when it was too hot to work I picked currants, raspberries or fruit in the garden
or went for a walk to a nearby forest and looked for birds` nests.
•
• ___F Later in the afternoon I used to go swimming or fishing in the river. When I felt lazy, I was just
lying in the sun and watching the birds and animals in the meadow.
Making up the best ending
Changing a text into a dialogue
                                        • Let`s talk about Belarus
• Vika: Hello, Juliet! Nice to see you after the week-end. _______________________?
• Juliet: Hi, Vika. I spent my weekend doing a project on Belarus.
• Vika: ________________________________ ?
• Juilet: I made up my mind to undertake this project because I am going to show it to my
• friends from Ireland so that they can learn more about our country.
• Vika: Great, Juliet! ___________________ them about where the name ‘White Rus’ came from?
• Juliet: Sure, I did. On the one hand the name is for ________________, an on the other hand probably
• because _____________________.
• Vika: I hope you have mentioned in your project what our widely known symbols are, _______?
• Juliet: Of course, they are _________________________________.
• Vika: I really can `t help admiring how good you are, Juliet, at describing our Belarus.
• I`m sure you must have written about the official emblem of Belarus too.
• Juliet: I wrote the following about it: _____________________________________.
• Vika: Our country is famous for its different customs and traditions.
• Juliet: I fully ____________ with you, Vika. Which ones would you like to talk about to the Irish?
• Vika: I would rather explain them what our Maslenitsa is like.
• Juliet: So?
• Vika: Well, it takes place _____________________________.
• Juliet: And I wrote to them about Kupalle: ________________________.
• Vika: That sounds interesting indeed. What ___________________________?
• Juliet: Well, my native village is …

  • 9. Arranging the story • • ___ A In the evening I had to help my grandmother feed the animals again and collect hens` eggs. I even learned to milk the cows and I was very proud of myself. My grandparents had a barn behind the house and I often used to sleep the night there. I took my sleeping-bag and a torch and slept in the hay. That was an unforgettable experience. After such holidays I always returned to the town refreshed and healthy. • • ___ D Nowadays I do not spend the summer in the country any longer. My grandparents have grown old and they are not strong enough to work in the fields or to look after cows, pigs and hens. I visited them last year but it was not the same. The village has grown and developed. You can no longer see horses in the fields but modern agricultural machines. • • ___B The forest I loved so much has been cut down for timber. Once a wonderful place to go on holidays, the village has become modernized and lost its natural beauty. I miss the good old days and feel sorry that time goes by so quickly. • • ___E When I was young, I used to spend the summer on my grandparents` farm. I loved those days so carefree and enjoyable. There were so many things to do and to see that I was never bored. I used to get up at sunrise and go for a long walk around a meadow. I had a dog and together we used to wander while the rest of the world was sleeping. • • ___C In the morning my grandmother used to feed the chickens and other farm animals and my grandfather turned out the cattle. Then together we went to a field to reap the harvest. We usually worked in the field until lunch time but when it was too hot to work I picked currants, raspberries or fruit in the garden or went for a walk to a nearby forest and looked for birds` nests. • • ___F Later in the afternoon I used to go swimming or fishing in the river. When I felt lazy, I was just lying in the sun and watching the birds and animals in the meadow.
