Our Vision
The Purdue Polytechnic Institute will be the nation’s premiere
technological college, an innovative institution that seeks to
redefine technology curricula and use-inspired research.
Our Mission
The Purdue Polytechnic Institute seeks to educate
technologists in a Learn by Doing environment through the
application of theory to practice. The Purdue Polytechnic
Institute balances the arts, science, and technology through
the tight integration of these disciplines to prepare leaders,
researchers, technological innovators and whole-system
thinkers to serve the needs of industry and solve global
challenges.
Purpose
The Purdue Polytechnic Institute will serve as an
incubator—a “hot house” or “skunk works”—in the
College of Technology, where transformation can thrive.
The Purdue Polytechnic Institute will serve as a disruptive
transformer and is motivated by the widening gulf between
the excitement and passion in generations of students who
are adventurous, curious, and socially and environmentally
aware.
What It Is…
 The Purdue Polytechnic Institute (PPI) provides students
with a transformative learning experience that is
uniquely aligned with the needs of industry and society.
 The curriculum is almost entirely based on Learn by
Doing through project-based learning experiences along
with self-paced and competency-based instruction.
 Students will be prepared as innovators and leaders who
possess deep technical skills and business management
principles.
 The technical skill and knowledge are integrated with the
humanities to build an understanding of applying science
and technology to social issues, problems, and solutions.
Approach
The Purdue Polytechnic Institute will create an educational
environment that nurtures and unleashes student
enthusiasm and passion rather than discourages and filters
them out.
 Incubator that permits learning innovation
 Changing Underlying Culture
 Strategic Partnerships
 Adoption of methods that address systematic and
sustainable change
Transforming the Student Learning Experience
 The PPI will be a zero-gravity space that is free of
constraints, restrictions, and traditions.
 The newly created education will be formed by well-
established research and evidence based best-practices
and will be developed in an environment that
encourages innovation and risk taking.
Transforming the Student Learning Experience
Once it is fully implemented, the Polytechnic curricula may
include the following required experiences:
o Semester-long Study Away experience
o Disciplinary integration with Liberal Arts
o Undergraduate research projects or
student-based projects
o History and Impact of Things & Stuff
o Creativity and problem solving
o Leadership and supervision principles
o Real-world Immersive Capstone
Experience (RICE)
o Foreign language
o Polytechnic Field Experience
o iMakers Certificate Program
o iMakers Lab and iLearning Lab
o The Sustainability Initiative
o Principles of critical thinking and logic
o Common first-year core curriculum
o Business and enterprise practices
Student Learning Outcomes
The Purdue Polytechnic curriculum will prepare graduates
for highly skilled technical careers, lifelong learning and
citizenship. Learning outcomes will include:
 critical thinking and problem solving
 access and analyze information in novel situations
 integrate and fabricate technology to innovate and solve
problems
 problem solve using technical knowledge applied at a
system or enterprise level
 Proven application of the lifecycle of innovation in
business and industry settings
Distinctive Attributes of Purdue Polytechnic Institute
 Creation of an Interdisciplinary Technology Studies Division
o The Interdisciplinary Technology Studies (ITS) Division in
the Purdue Polytechnic Institute will serve as a center for
undergraduate education innovation that extends beyond
traditional departmental boundaries.
o The Interdisciplinary Technology Studies Division will be an
incubator for new ideas—including experimental
programs and courses—as well as curriculum designed to
promote the ideals of technology education.
New Courses in the Purdue Polytechnic Institute
 Humanities & Technology—a first year course that integrates
important humanities, such as critical thinking, logic,
philosophy of technology, and great literature, with an
introduction to the grand challenge problems facing
humanity.
 History and Impact of Things & Stuff Course—a first-year
course in the Purdue Polytechnic Institute that is team-
taught by Liberal Arts and Polytechnic faculty. The course
will cover important technological artifacts and societal
events to guide the students to understand the significance
and impact of technology throughout human history.

Purdue Polytechnic Institute’s Strategic Partners
 An important element of approach involves breaking
boundaries between disciplines and educate students in a
multi-disciplinary fashion.
 The integration of technology and School of Liberal Arts
provides a context and motivation for the students.
o Integrated courses with Philosophy & Foreign Language
 Core curriculum development based upon scientific
understanding of human motivations and learning.
o Partnerships with School of Education
 The Center for Instructional Excellence and the Discovery
Learning Research Center will help design and deliver

Purdue Polytechnic Institute
College of Technology—Looking Forward
 There are no immediate to near future plans to change the name of
the college, close the college, or cease admissions into the college.
 The Purdue Polytechnic Institute will create innovative pedagogical
methodologies that once perfected and successful, will migrate to the
College of Technology, and perhaps beyond.
 The migration process is an unquantifiable evolutionary product, as is
the degree of involvement of other academic units on campus,
particularly those that help fulfill the core curriculum requirements.
 The rate of the college’s migration to the new educational paradigms
will set the pace for the evolutionary process and eventual
transformation of the College of Technology.
 Whether the college undergoes an eventual name change or
transforms into the Polytechnic is currently indeterminate.
Faculty Fellows—Your Turn for Discussion
 What about the Polytechnic appeals to you?
 How does what you have heard this evening match your
(prior) vision for the Purdue Polytechnic Institute?
 What is your own vision for fall 2014?
 What course or activity do you plan to offer?
 How do you envision creating collaborative teaching
opportunities with faculty from other colleges?
 What do you see as your greatest challenge in developing
your course or activity and how will you approach it?
 Are there other questions you have or topics that you want
covered during future workshops?
Information and Upcoming Events
 Your options for your online Faculty Fellow Photo was
emailed to you earlier today, please make your selection by
Monday, October 14
 Next Faculty Fellow workshop is scheduled for Thursday,
October 17, 4:30pm-8:30pm in STEW 214AB
