                  This demonstrates how to
                  create, establish and
maintain a wiki to use for
                  standards based curriculum.
P u rp o s e

The ISTE’s National Educational Technology Standards for
Students (2007), and the Framework for 21st Century Learning
shows that technology tools are integral to helping students
meet or exceed these and other standards. One of these tools
is a wiki, and teaching students how to use this tool will change
the way they learn. Also, incorporated into a wiki, is the ability
to add videos, podcasts, audio, and other web tools.

In previous days of teaching, the learning from textbooks was
synchronous, and linear. Also, with earlier websites, these
were passive. A student could read information from the page,
but was not allowed to add to the information or change it in
any way. A wiki focuses on the Web 2.0 tools because they
allow for much more interaction and user-created content.
W a y s t o U s e W ik is

 As an organizational hub for the classroom, e.g., assignments
collaborative groups, projects, rubrics, study guides
 For communication such as class discussions, class questions,
    assignments, class notes (for absentees)
 In Reading: create a vocabulary wiki that could be easily
placed in chart form, students or teachers could list new
vocabulary words in one column on a page and students could
define in another column, or develop linked pages for Word
    Walls
 In Math: use pages to illustrate step-by-step word problems or
illustrate the meaning of math vocabulary definitions
 An FAQ or KWL page can be added for any subject, a KWLH
chart would allow students to submit resources for in-depth
study (i.e., how I can learn more)
A d d it io n a l W a y s t o U s e
                   W ik is
 Science: explain or demonstrate the scientific method,
collaborate with other schools on 'green' projects or practices,
give detailed descriptions of scientific processes
 Social Studies: debate past political issues, post current
events, develop a community contact list for local government.
Virtual field trips and travelogues could be housed here, or
create a project such as Flat Stanley and post Flat Stanley’s
    travel itinerary
 Writing: start a never-ending classroom story, post book
reviews, (podcast, video, or text), begin discussions of poetry
or classic literature, have a writer's workshop, interview
character, post grammar tips, create class dictionaries
 Health: post nutrition information, exercise tips, proper
    medication uses
 Galleries: post exemplary student work, or student
    contributions of favorite classroom creations
E d u c a t io n a l G o a ls
 To integrate technology with project-based, collaborative
    learning
 To build greater connections between new and prior knowledge
    of standards based content
 To incorporate Bloom’s taxonomy especially synthesis and
    evaluation
 To engage creativity skills along with elaboration and fluency
 To encourage “hitch-hiking” on ideas (a type of creative
elaboration and analytical thinking: If X is true, then what about
    Y?)
 To introduce and reinforce the idea that a creative piece is
never finished, information can be continuously added
 To increase engagement in learning
 In lieu of being a passive “consumer”, a student must respond,
    change, and critique
A d d it io n a l E d u c a t io n a l
                  G o a ls
 To develop interpersonal and communication skills, especially
consensus-building and compromise, in an environment where
    the product motivates interpersonal problem-solving
 To develop true teamwork skills
 To create an awareness of a wider, more authentic audience
 To help students articulate issues about ownership
 To find and restate different conceptualizations of the same
    content
 To kindle metacognition
 To meet the needs of the various learning styles of students
E d u c a t o r F r ie n d ly W ik is

 PBWorks: (also known as Peanut Butter Wiki) This
offers library templates, great wiki etiquette tips for
    students and teachers, presentation ideas,
    screencasts and more for educators
 Wikispaces: Offers free wikis for K-12 educators,
embeddable easy -to-use widgets, frequently asked
    questions with answers from teachers
 WetPaint: Free wikis with a special section for
    educators
 PikiWiki: Free wiki space that offers great ideas for
    using a wiki
L e s s o n P la n
 The objective of this lesson is to facilitate collaborative learning while
    integrating content-based standard material.
 Part 1: Establish rules for safely using the internet and review copyright laws
 Part 2: Explain the purpose of the wiki
 Part 3: Teacher will create a wiki on PBWorks; complete the registration form,
and name the wiki 5thGMathVocab. Name has to be unique and one the
    students will remember.
 Part 4: Create a Front Page describing the wiki with instructions for the
students to follow: Find the goal that matches your definition and click on the link to
add to the appropriate category. Then type in your definition. If you see a definition
that is incorrectly placed, please change it to the goal that the definition belongs to.
Remember to always click on the SAVE button after you have edited.
 Part 5: Create a page for each of the math goals.
 Part 6: Have students edit information collaboratively and collectively
    throughout the a nine-week period.
 Part 7: Teacher monitors the wiki and assesses the students’ work.
