When he is not saving schools time and money, Glenaldo G. "Glenn" Pena enjoys traveling and sightseeing, and has traveled to Rome, Italy. Rome is famous for its rich history, culture, and architecture, with sites that often mix all three. One of the people responsible for Rome’s aesthetic is Gian Lorenzo Bernini, a Baroque sculptor and architect who played a role in creating many of the city’s breathtaking water fountains, including the following three. 1. Fontana Dei Quattro Fiumi, or the Fountain of the Four Rivers, is located in the center of Piazza Navona.
- 3. Bernini Fountains • The piece was commissioned by Pope Innocent X in 1651 to view from his family’s nearby palace, the Palazzo Pamphilj. The fountain features four river gods, made to represent the four continents Rome knew about at the time, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. 2. Fontana Del Tritone is a massive fountain dedicated to the Greek Sea God, Triton, the son of Poseidon. Located in the middle of Rome’s busy Piazza Barberini, Fontana Del Tritone was commissioned in 1642 by Pope Urban VIII, a member of the same Barberini family the plaza is named for. 3. Fontana delle Tartarughe, which translates to “The Turtle Fountain,” is a smaller, out-of-the-way fountain found in Piazza Mattei. Though the fountain was built between 1581 and 1584 by Taddeo Landini, it gets its current name from the four turtles that top the fountain, added during a 1658 restoration led by Bernini himself.
