2. Climate Change and Poverty The earth is warming up. The climate is changing

3. Many of the countries are experiencing the greatest shocks with climatic changes. Many are agreed that climate change may be one of the greatest threats facing the planet.

The proportion of the environmental poor in total poor under the $ 1.25/ day criterion is estimated to increase from 53% in 2005 to about 70% in 2020, although this proportion of vulnerable poor (under the 2$/day poverty line) will decrease from 85% to 62%. Annual economic losses from natural disasters average 13.4% of the GDP of developing countries.

5. For Asia, this means an average physical loss equivalent to $ 39.5 billion. During 1990-1998, nearly all (94%) of the world’s 568 major natural disasters were in developing countries, as were more than 97%ofallnaturaldisaster-related deaths. Climate change is a global phenomenon; its negative impacts are more severely felt by poor people and poor countries.

6. The poor are more vulnerable because of their high dependence on natural resources, and their limited capacity to cope with climate variability and extremes. In short, Climate change causes more poverty in the world particularly in developing countries.
