Reported Speech – Part 2

 Reported Questions
Study the examples
• “Do you trust me, Harry?” asked Hermione.
• Hermione asked Harry if he trusted her.
• “Why are you still here?” Harry asked Ron.
• Harry asked Ron why he was still there.
Changes
• As you can see there are some changes we
  have already mentioned when studying
  reporting statements (personal pronouns,
  possessive adjectives and pronouns, tenses,
  time adverbials).
• There are some new ones, though.
Reporting verbs
• Reporting verbs used are mainly:

          ask, want to know, wonder
Types of questions
• We distinguish two types of questions:
• Yes/no questions (the ones starting with an
auxiliary or modal verb to which we reply with
  yes/no)
• Wh-questions (the ones starting with a
question word, such as what, when, where,
  why, how etc.)
Yes/no • Harry asked Lupin: “Will
                      George be OK?”
questions
                    • Harry asked Lupin whether
When we report
                      George would be OK.
these questions we
link two parts with • Harry asked Ron: “Do ghouls
if/whether normally wear pyjamas?”
                    • Harry asked Ron if ghouls
                      normally wore pyjamas.
• “Where are we?” asked
Wh-questions Ron.
The two parts are • Ron asked them where
linked with the they were.
question word
                    • “How does she know?”
used in direct
speech.
                      wondered Hermione.
                    • Hermione wondered how
                      she knew.
Word order
• In reported yes/no questions, we use
  if/whether + the subject + the verb.
• In reported –wh questions, we us
the wh- word + the subject + the verb.
• We do not use the interrogative form of the
  verb: do/does/did
• Question marks are not used.
• “Does it make a difference?” asked Hermione.
• Hermione wanted to know if it made a difference.
• “What do you know about the Deathly Hallows?”
  Harry asked Mr Olivander.
• Harry asked Mr Olivander what he knew about the
  Deathly Hallows.
Let’s practise
• “Why isn’t he coming with us?” asked Dudley.
• Dudley wanted to know why he wasn’t coming
  with them.
• “Can you control what you dream
  about, Hermione?” asked Harry.
• Harry asked Hermione whether she could
  control what she dreamed about.
• “Are you sure?” Bellatrix asked Griphook.
• Bellatrix asked Griphook whether he was sure.
• “Why isn’t Hermione with you?” Harry asked
  Ron.
• Harry asked Ron why Hermione wasn’t with
  him.
• “How are we going to find Bathilda’s house?”
  asked Hermione.
• Hermione asked Harry how they were going to
  find Bathilda’s house.
• “Where have you brought me?” asked Phineas
  Nigellus.
• Phineas Nigellus wanted to know where they
  had brought him.
