  1. This workshop considers the production design of technologies that inhabit the science fiction universe presented in The Expanse, by James Corey and produced for Amazon Prime. The world building of this universe is truly excellent. Technologies proposed are well thought through, and therefore fit seamlessly into this universe. I’m going to try and use this context to teach you something about the framework I use when designing a new engineering concept.
  2. The expanse is a multi-part book and tv series, that dramatizes the expansion of humanity out into the solar system. Factions complete for control of resources, and conflict is common. Q: Have you seen it? Q: Have you read any of the books? Q: Did you enjoy it?
  3. Narratives tend to incorporate characters that must respond to this conflict. Personalities collide or collaborate, and a drama unfolds. Describe each character… Q: Are you familiar with either of these characters? Q: Can you describe them? Q: Do their respective characteristics tell us anything about problem solving? Q: Which character would be better at problem solving? The intuitive creative, or the pragmatic structured approach?
  4. The world of The Expanse is employed to tell an exciting tale of adventure and intrigue that spans the solar system, and involves three cultures in conflict. As a result, the narrative is punctuated by frequent conflicts that result in violent confrontations, typically involving firearms from civilian to military. However, I have a question. Q: What do you see? Q: What’s going on here? Q: Do you notice that they appear to be using primitive weapons? Q: What kind of weapons are they using?
  5. This is the 24th Century. The guns fire projectiles that cause damage when they strike surfaces. This raises another question. Q: Have hand weapons advanced much in the intervening centuries? Whilst its possible to have a completely different solution I think that the fact that people have been using this mechanism for hundreds of years tells us that there is a good chance that they will be using for hundreds more. Q: Why? Q: What is so good about this solution to the problem of an armed confrontation??
  6. The action takes place in environments such as fast moving spacecraft, or large stationary habitats teeming with civilian populations. This might lead us to ask questions of this universe. Q: How vulnerable are these environments? Q: What happens if you fire a gun inside these environments? Q: Do these guns match the environment in which the action takes place? Q: If not, how could you make them match?
  7. To build a believable fictional world may face many contradictions. Drama itself thrives on each character’s internal contradiction. For example, James Holden is the hero. He is an honest, principled man seeking to protect humanity from itself and from threats. Q: If he has such care for the lives of others, why does the character James Holden fight so hard? Q: Why is he always shooting people? Q: What is Holden’s objective? Q: Do his principles match his actions?
  8. Q: Is Holden a complex character because he is fighting…for peace? I’m no screen writer at all. However… Q: Do the contradictions exhibited make this character more interesting? Q: Do the contradictions forced upon Holden make the drama more interesting?

  14. Pre-prepared example, to constrain the workshop This is teaching material, so I have to take some shortcuts just to constrain our progress a little. Q: Do these benefits match those that you identified? We could realise any one of these benefits if we had nothing stopping us from doing so. However, the way we realise some of our desires may actually contradict the desire to achieve other benefits or resolve other harms. So, we have to look at the current solution.
  15. Now we have our desires understood, it is worth taking a moment to determine how the characters in the narrative solve this problem. We have noted that the narrative employs a rather mundane solution – a kinetic projectile. Q: Is this sci fi weapon in the Expanse much different from those contemporary solutions that we already understand? Pop and anchor in….
  16. The benefits we seek do not necessarily logically contradict. However, this current, mundane solution might introduce contradictions. Q: Can you describe how this mundane solution delivers the benefits that we desire? Q: Does the mundane solution offers us everything that we want? Q: Does the mundane solution introduce any contradictions?

The best way to be sure that we have identified all of the potential contradictions in our assumed solution, is to create a matrix and cross reference all of our desires against all of the others. Q: Can you identify the solutions that realise these desires contradict one another? Q: Why do they contradict? Q: Is the contradiction symmetric?

  19. It isn’t enough to understand that our desires may contradict. We must understand why these solutions contradict. To understand why they contradict, we must understand why the mundane solution is inadequate. Q: Can we identify the mechanisms that would offer each of these benefits? Q: Why are we using this mechanism?
  20. A balance of options is a typical way to resolve contradictions between our desires. A little bit from column A, a little bit from column B. Make a pistol just powerful enough to defeat armour, but only so powerful that we can hold it in one hand. However, we don’t intend to compromise between desires or solution. We don’t start by trading performance away.
  21. Contradictory solutions provide a poor foundation upon which pursue all of our desires. One support may be perfectly adequate, but combined with another solution, we achieve an uneven pair of supports. Both supports are perfectly adequate in isolation, but paired together an one will harm the other.
  22. To resolve this problem, we don’t throw out everything and start again. We can keep one support, and replace the other with a great idea.
