1.
Active learning seminar hosted by the Social Innovation Park
Santurtzi (Bilbao) 12 – 13 July 2012
Can the popularity of online gaming
be u lised to reach out and foster a
different set of values, encouraging
people to engage and contribute to
a socially sustainable future?
Every day, millions of people engage online to play games, interac ng in real me in the virtual
world. Be it “Farmville”, “World of Warcra ” or “Angry Birds”, serious gamers spend on average 18‐22
hours per week to solve ‘epic problems’ ‐ reach the next gaming level or fight other warlords. However,
the values that most games communicate reflect an unsustainable consumerist society, based on individ‐
ual profit, extreme compe on and exploita on of resources.
We aim to explore how online games could promote civic
engagement for a different mind‐set, towards a sustainable
and inclusive society yet s ll being cool and ‘addic ve’
As part of the European FP7 research project ‘Emergence by Design’ Euclid Network, together with the
Social Innova on Park, will gather a group of stakeholders at a seminar to explore this ques on and its
poten al applica ons. The group will include video game designers, companies, scien sts, users and civil
society prac oners already involved in the field or interested in doing it.
2. Why to attend
To present your already developed online game for civic engagement (for instance
Indigenous‐infused Digital Games that will be presented by Cook Intel Tribal Council)
To explore whether online gaming can tackle the social challenge close to your heart
(for instance youth unemployment in your city)
Organisers’ commitments
The Social Innova on Park is ready to support ideas if they have the poten al to
develop into a social enterprise.
Euclid Network aims to explore whether online gaming can be a tool to engage
people in European democracy, especially in the light of the European Parliament
elec ons in 2014
