  2. 2. What is a Group Discussion ? •The term suggests a discussion among a group of persons. •It is used as reliable, testing device mainly as a tool to assess all the candidates in a group at one go -in order to select the best in comparative perspective.

What is a Group Discussion ? •A GD is a methodology used by an organization to gauge whether the candidate has certain personality traits and/or skills that it desires in its members. •In this methodology, the group of candidates is given a topic or a situation, given a few minutes to think about the same, and then asked to discuss the it among themselves for 15-20 minutes.

What is a Group Discussion ? •Group Discussion is a modern method of assessing candidate’s ability to express ideas coherently, logically and systematically and also his/her leadership Quality . •Examiner can judge whether the person has self-confidence, tact ,a cool temperament and an mind and also whether the person can convince others about what he/she thinks is right.

Do’s 1 •Present Logical Reasons in case you Disagree •Address all the Members of the Group when you are Making Comments. •Clarity of Speech is of Utmost Importance as only then would the other Members be able to Hear and Understand you. 2 •While other Members are Speaking, Listen to them Patiently •Try to Bring the Thinking of the Participants In Line with your Ideas and Thoughts with Strong Arguments •Be Precise.
  10. 10. Do’s 3 3 •Throughout the Course of the Discussion be Humble and Polite say, ‘You are welcome,’ ‘Please go ahead,’ ‘Thank you for your comments,’ and so on.
  11. 11. Do’s 4 •Be Serious. Do Not Hot and Cold when your Criticized. Keep yourself Cool and Accept Whatever comes to you way in Good Way

Don’ts… 1 Don’t make inappropriate gestures. Don’t interrupt a participant until he/she has finished speaking. Don’t feel shy or nervous in a Group Discussion as it is a Meeting of Equals. 2 Don’t burst out in an emotional manner and start criticizing what other participants have to say unless you have valid arguments to support your viewpoint Don’t make Fun of a Participant; it is definitely not recommended
  13. 13. Don’ts… 3 Don’t be Rigid. If the argument presented by a fellow participant is correct then do appreciate this fact fact and accept it. Don’t make this whole exercise a monologue, thus rendering it meaningless. So, give others a chance to speak too. 4 Be Firm with your stand until you are sure that what the other participants are saying is correct. Once you are convinced, give in gracefully.
