Introduction of Multimedia
Learning Competencies
• Identify multimedia elements in various forms (graphics,
animation, sound, video, etc.) as encountered and used in
daily life (entertainment, education, business, etc.) SSP_TLE-
CT8MB-Ia-b-1.1
Derived from the word “Multi” and “Media”
• Multi
-Many, Multiple,
• Media
-Meduim of Communication & information presentation –
text, graphic, voice, images, music and etc
What is Multimedia
Multimedia is a combination of text,
graphics, sound, animation and video, to
effectively communicate ideas to users.
• In a multimedia application, basically the
elements are divided into two:
1. dynamic (objects that move or
change)
2. static (objects that do not move).

Five main elements of multimedia
5 Elements of Multimedia
A broad term for something that
contains words to express
something.
Text is the most basic element of
multimedia.
A good choice of words could
help convey the intended
message to the users (keywords).
Used in contents, menus,
navigational buttons
1. Text
• To produce an effective multimedia
program there are three things that
need to be considered. They are:
The position of the text on the screen.
The length of the message
Legibility of the text
• In multimedia application, other media
screen can be linked through the use of text.
This what you called HYPERTEXT
2. Graphics/Images
 The oldest form of media
 Two-dimensional figure or illustration
and make the multimedia application
attractive.
 Used in multimedia to show more
clearly what a particular information is
all about and illustrate ideas through
still pictures
 Could be produced manually (by
drawing, painting, carving, etc.) or by
computer graphics technology.
2. Graphics/Images
 There are two types of graphics used:
Bitmaps and Vectors
 Various file formats of images are .jpg, .png,
.gif etc.
 Bitmap images are real images that can
be captured from devices such as
cameras.
 Vector graphics are created using
software in the computer .
3. Audio
• Produced by vibration, as
perceived by the sense of
hearing.
• In multimedia, audio could
come in the form of speech,
sound effects and also music
score which makes it easier for
people to understand.
There are two basic types of audio or
sound: analog and digital audio.
• Analog audio refers to the original sound
signal. Digital audio refers to the digital
sampling of the actual sound.
• We can record analog audio file. We can use
special audio editors like Sound Forge to
convert analog audio files into digital audio
files.
Various audio software include VLC media
player, real player, etc.
● Is the technology of capturing,
recording, processing, transmitting, and
reconstructing moving pictures.
● Video is more towards photo
realistic image sequence / live
recording as in comparison to
animation.
● Video enhances, dramatizes, and
gives impact to your multimedia
application to effectively convey
great deal of information.
Video
ANIMATION
 Animation is the rapid display of a
sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D
artwork or model positions in order to
create an illusion of movement.
 The effect is an optical illusion of
motion due to the phenomenon
of persistence of vision.
 Animation adds visual impact to the
multimedia project.
 Animation are used in cartoons,
visualization.
• 2D animation refers to creating movements in
basic objects. These objects are put into
various situations or positions and have
movement on the screen.
• 3D animation refers to creating movements to
three dimensional digital objects from
photographs. Movements like spinning and
flying across the screen are some samples of
animations.
Control
One final component of multimedia is the
amount of control afforded to the user. At a
minimum the user should be able to start
and stop the program. In more advanced
programs there may be a multitude of
navigation options available to take users
through the program.
Control
The various multimedia elements used in
multimedia can be produced by different
application programs, such as
•Graphics/Drawing programs
•Animation programs
•Word Processing
•Image capture - digital cameras, scanners
•Digital Video editing
•Sound recording and editing programs.
Standard File Formats
• Each of the five elements mentioned has
various standard file formats. A file format
is a particular way to store information in
a computer. The formats will allow you to
make decisions of the type of text,
graphic, audio, video and animation to
use when developing your own
multimedia program.
Standard File Formats of Each
Element
1. Text
2. Graphic
3. Audio
4. Video
5. Animation
Linear VS Non-Linear
• A Multimedia Project is identified as Linear
when:
–It is not interactive
–User have no control over the content
that is being showed to them.
• Example:
–A movie
–A non-interactive lecture / demo show
LINEAR
Linear VS Non-Linear
•
• A Multimedia Project is identified as Non-Linear
when:
– It is interactive
– Users have control over the content that is
being showed to them.
–Users are given navigational control
Example:
– Games
– Courseware
– Web sites( Social Media ,Educational Site)
NON-LINEAR
computer programs or other material
designed for use in an educational or
training course.
INTERACTIVITY
 Interactivity can be termed as the dialog that
occurs between an individual and a computer
program.
 Interactive multimedia refers to the multimedia
applications that allow users to actively
participate rather than being passive recipients of
information.
 Technologies such as DVDs and digital TV are
classic examples of interactive media devices,
where a user can control what they watch and
when.
IMPORTANCE OF MULTIMEDIA
 “Tell me and I will forget; show me and I
may remember; involve me and I will
understand” (Chinese proverb)
 Each person learns differently and each
person is inspired by something
different. The use of multimedia allows
developers to tap into these
differences.

Lesson 1 multimedia

  • 2. Learning Competencies • Identify multimedia elements in various forms (graphics, animation, sound, video, etc.) as encountered and used in daily life (entertainment, education, business, etc.) SSP_TLE- CT8MB-Ia-b-1.1
  • 3. Derived from the word “Multi” and “Media” • Multi -Many, Multiple, • Media -Meduim of Communication & information presentation – text, graphic, voice, images, music and etc
  • 4. What is Multimedia Multimedia is a combination of text, graphics, sound, animation and video, to effectively communicate ideas to users.
  • 5. • In a multimedia application, basically the elements are divided into two: 1. dynamic (objects that move or change) 2. static (objects that do not move).
  • 7. 5 Elements of Multimedia A broad term for something that contains words to express something. Text is the most basic element of multimedia. A good choice of words could help convey the intended message to the users (keywords). Used in contents, menus, navigational buttons 1. Text
  • 8. • To produce an effective multimedia program there are three things that need to be considered. They are: The position of the text on the screen. The length of the message Legibility of the text • In multimedia application, other media screen can be linked through the use of text. This what you called HYPERTEXT
  • 9. 2. Graphics/Images  The oldest form of media  Two-dimensional figure or illustration and make the multimedia application attractive.  Used in multimedia to show more clearly what a particular information is all about and illustrate ideas through still pictures  Could be produced manually (by drawing, painting, carving, etc.) or by computer graphics technology.
  • 10. 2. Graphics/Images  There are two types of graphics used: Bitmaps and Vectors  Various file formats of images are .jpg, .png, .gif etc.  Bitmap images are real images that can be captured from devices such as cameras.  Vector graphics are created using software in the computer .
  • 11. 3. Audio • Produced by vibration, as perceived by the sense of hearing. • In multimedia, audio could come in the form of speech, sound effects and also music score which makes it easier for people to understand. There are two basic types of audio or sound: analog and digital audio.
  • 12. • Analog audio refers to the original sound signal. Digital audio refers to the digital sampling of the actual sound. • We can record analog audio file. We can use special audio editors like Sound Forge to convert analog audio files into digital audio files. Various audio software include VLC media player, real player, etc.
  • 13. ● Is the technology of capturing, recording, processing, transmitting, and reconstructing moving pictures. ● Video is more towards photo realistic image sequence / live recording as in comparison to animation. ● Video enhances, dramatizes, and gives impact to your multimedia application to effectively convey great deal of information. Video
  • 14. ANIMATION  Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement.  The effect is an optical illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision.  Animation adds visual impact to the multimedia project.  Animation are used in cartoons, visualization.
  • 15. • 2D animation refers to creating movements in basic objects. These objects are put into various situations or positions and have movement on the screen. • 3D animation refers to creating movements to three dimensional digital objects from photographs. Movements like spinning and flying across the screen are some samples of animations.
  • 16. Control One final component of multimedia is the amount of control afforded to the user. At a minimum the user should be able to start and stop the program. In more advanced programs there may be a multitude of navigation options available to take users through the program.
  • 17. Control The various multimedia elements used in multimedia can be produced by different application programs, such as •Graphics/Drawing programs •Animation programs •Word Processing •Image capture - digital cameras, scanners •Digital Video editing •Sound recording and editing programs.
  • 18. Standard File Formats • Each of the five elements mentioned has various standard file formats. A file format is a particular way to store information in a computer. The formats will allow you to make decisions of the type of text, graphic, audio, video and animation to use when developing your own multimedia program.
  • 19. Standard File Formats of Each Element 1. Text
  • 24. Linear VS Non-Linear • A Multimedia Project is identified as Linear when: –It is not interactive –User have no control over the content that is being showed to them. • Example: –A movie –A non-interactive lecture / demo show LINEAR
  • 25. Linear VS Non-Linear • • A Multimedia Project is identified as Non-Linear when: – It is interactive – Users have control over the content that is being showed to them. –Users are given navigational control Example: – Games – Courseware – Web sites( Social Media ,Educational Site) NON-LINEAR computer programs or other material designed for use in an educational or training course.
  • 26. INTERACTIVITY  Interactivity can be termed as the dialog that occurs between an individual and a computer program.  Interactive multimedia refers to the multimedia applications that allow users to actively participate rather than being passive recipients of information.  Technologies such as DVDs and digital TV are classic examples of interactive media devices, where a user can control what they watch and when.
  • 27. IMPORTANCE OF MULTIMEDIA  “Tell me and I will forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I will understand” (Chinese proverb)  Each person learns differently and each person is inspired by something different. The use of multimedia allows developers to tap into these differences.
  • 29. BENEFITS OF MULTIMEDIA  Addresses multiple learning styles  Provides an excellent way to convey content  Uses a variety of media elements to reinforce one idea  Activates multiple senses creating rich experiences Gives life to flat information  Enables users to control Web experience  Enhance user enjoyment improves retention
  • 30. Use of Multimedia • There are a number of fields where multimedia could be of use. Examples are:- – Business – Education – Entertainment – Home – Public Places
