Ramboll - BIM - Now It's Serious

  1. 1. BIM – NOW IT’S SERIOUS!
  2. 2. AGENDA • Introduction to the various documentation supporting Level 2 with a general overview of contents • Then dive into the MPDT & MIDP and explain this is the project scope in BIM speak – something that the director needs to define not CAD • Group Discussion
  3. 3. RUK VIEW ON GOVERNMENT APPROACH Strengths • Focus on Customers reviewing their processes and briefs to be focussed on performance requirements to enable innovative approaches is excellent • Emphasis on all data being produced so that it exports easily into a neutral format database to support FM is excellent • Great work in developing common industry standards • The focus on automatic production of verifiable decision gate packages with simple exception Red, Amber, Green (RAG) reports is very good • Working to align BIM across Europe
  4. 4. RUK VIEW ON GOVERNMENT APPROACH Weaknesses • The detail and jargon overcomplicates BIM – Simplicity is lost • The prescriptive requirements of PAS1192-2 contradict the approach of giving freedom to innovate • Too much emphasis on COBie as the required neutral format • The rush for instant results limits meaningful industry feedback
  5. 5. OTHER UK STANDARDS • AEC (UK) BIM Protocol • RIBA Plan on Works
  6. 6. CURRENT LEVEL 2 : MERVYN RICHARDS • BS1192:2007 & PAS1192-2:2013 • CIC BIM Protocol + App 1 & 2 • CPIc Pre and Post BIM Execution Plans (BEP) • CPIc – TIDP, Supplier IT, BIM & Resource Assessment Forms • CIC Professional Indemnity • CIC Outline Scope of Services for Information Management (IM) • Digital Plan of Work (DPoW) (Draft Only) • Employers Information Requirements (EIR) • COBie UK 2012 information delivery templates
  7. 7. FUTURE LEVEL 2 : MARK BEW • BS1192:2007 & PAS 1192-2:2013 • PAS 1192-3 – AIM (to be released Q2/2014) • PAS 1192-4 - COBie (to be released Q2/2014) • CIC BIM Protocol + App 1 & 2 • Government Soft Landing (GSL) The Technology Strategy Board is to invest up to £1.5m to support the development of a free-to-use digital tool that can exploit the standards being made publicly available for building information modelling (BIM). • Classification System (Contract Award 26/10/2014 - tbc) • Digital Plan of Work (DPoW) (Contract Award 26/10/2014 - tbc)
  8. 8. PAS1192-2:2013 • PAS1192-2:2013 builds on the BS1192:2007 as a means of delivering the employers requirements and the employers information requirements for any type of project. • The main purpose of the PAS is to ensure that the employer and those tendering for projects fully understand the needs of the project delivery. • No Surprises.
  9. 9. THE BIM LIFECYCLE
  10. 10. EMPLOYERS INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS
  11. 11. CPIX BIM ASSESSMENT FORM • 4 Sections • 64 questions • Sample Questions: G2.1 Do you work to a CAD / BIM Standard? G3 How do you demonstrate or what measures do you have In place to ensure compliance with your CAD / BIM Standard? G6 Can you provide CAD / BIM related qualifications and CPD Certification for proposed team members?
  12. 12. CPIX IT ASSESSMENT FORM • 14 Sections • 115 questions • Sample Questions: 1.3.1 Please indicate the drawing and CAD modelling approaches that are used in your organisation. Give a rough indication as to the proportion of your outputs that use each method in a typical year. 1.3.7 Describe briefly how your CAD operator skills are kept up to date. 1.6 Please describe any limitations placed on your ability to exchange electronic information by your PI insurers, eg a requirement to send parallel paper copies of electronic document. If you have a policy statement, please attach it for reference.
  13. 13. CPIX RESOURCE ASSESSMENT
  14. 14. CPIX TASK TEAM INFORMATION DELIVERY PLAN
  15. 15. UNDERSTANDING LOD? • Level of Detail or better described as Depth of Detail. • This is the level of graphical granularity and how much information is contained within the element.
  16. 16. UNDERSTANDING LOD? • Level of Development (AIA E202) • In essence the Level of Development is a maturity matrix for objects and systems within a package model. The LOD defines what each object or system can be relied upon for.
  17. 17. UNDERSTANDING LOD? • Level of Definition (PAS1192-2:2013) • The combination of Level of Detail (graphical granularity) and Level of Information (non graphical granularity). A full model based status, giving an indication on what the model/s can be relied upon for at a point in time. The Level of Definition is the master status of the project at predefined milestones. Reference should be made to Section 9.8, Levels of model definition in PAS1192-2:2013.
  18. 18. MODEL PRODUCTION DELIVERY TABLE
  19. 19. MODEL PRODUCTION DELIVERY TABLE
  20. 20. INFORMATION EXCHANGE (IE)
  21. 21. MODEL DEFINITION
  22. 22. LEVEL OF DEFINITION BY DESIGN STAGE
  23. 23. BIM USES
  24. 24. LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT BY BIM USE
  25. 25. COSTING TO NRM • Additional information and costing requirements matrix Noted extra – please provide gross area of finishes?
  26. 26. GROUP DISCUSSION • 10 min discussion on the following: 1. Using current job titles ie tech, grad, senior eng, director etc who do you think best fits Table 2 2. Using the EIR which information do you think you should be concerned about when bidding for projects? and why? 3. What challenges do you see ahead to reaching Level 2
  27. 27. SUMMARY • Modelling Strategy is a must • Level 2 BIM is still an aspiration • Understand your full deliverables • Directors need to input to LOD to clearly define BIM deliverables • Don’t be shy to admit your failings! BEP has capability and training assessments for a reason • Don’t let BIM become a way to micro-manage the design team
