1. EB-5 IMMIGRATION CAN BE TAXING
Psychologists tell us that moving is one of the top five stressors. Moving from one country to another is significantly more stressful. When that move involves significant cultural and language changes, it is even more stressful. Imagine the stress on EB-5 investors and their families immigrating to the U.S., especially those from mainland China.
Adding to all the so-called ordinary moving stress, these immigrants will eventually face the need to understand the U.S. tax system. That’s something many Americans never learn to understand. But for immigrants with permanent resident status the consequences of failing to understand what, where and when to file can potentially be much more serious than birth citizens. For that reason alone, no EB-5 applicant should be brought to this country without the wise counsel of experienced tax attorneys and Certified Public Accountants.
These people have far too much at risk to be dropped into the deep end of the pool. If you are a project developer working directly with investors or if you are a Regional Center, you must assume the responsibility of making your clients aware of their need for sound financial advice and of directing them to qualified resources. Your direction can help make their transition less taxing.
