10. Tasks I have carried out
I have carried out a variety number of tasks such as the front cover, double page spread analysis
alongside with the mood board which enable me to have some sort of idea what kind of
content in terms of the artists & bands will be involved in my music magazine.
Another task which I have carried out was a questionnaire which was displayed on Survey
Monkey which allowed me to know what the potential customers would want if I was to
release a Music Magazine.
Furthermore I had to create a photography plan in order to know what type of shot I was
planning to take place & what type of artists I wanted to use when/if I was going to actually go
ahead and produce a music magazine.
11. In addition to this, I have also targeted
this age range as these teenagers
want access to possible music festival
dates which they could go to which
can both benefit the consumer and
the music magazine itself in the sense
that we (the music magazine) are
providing legitimate music festival
dates to the consumer who might
want to start regularly buy more of
this issue.
The music magazine that I will be creating will be
Published Once A Week
and the reason for this will be to keep the
customers of my magazine content with my
magazine which gives them the latest ins and
outs of the music industry for example: gossip,
interviews, festival dates. In addition to this, I am
publishing my magazine once a week as it is a
constant regular basis which will help potential
customers to be lured to my magazine if they
want regular content which gives you standard
updates on the music industry.
The News of Music is my first title I will be
talking about within this document and
the reason I have pondered about using
this as my music magazine title as my
magazine as it matches the content that
will be in my music magazine (updates and
information within the music industry).
12. I have decided that our music magazine will be
Published Once A Weekand the reason for
this will be to keep the customers of my magazine content
with my magazine which gives them the latest ins and
outs of the music industry for example: gossip, interviews,
festival dates. In addition to this, I am publishing my
magazine once a week as it is a constant regular basis
which will help potential customers to be lured to my
magazine if they want regular content which gives you
standard updates on the music industry.
The denotation of the target age demographic is the
and the main reason for this is the valid feedback I had
received from the general public who were within this
age range and wanted a music magazine that fitted
the criteria of: interviews with famous pop stars,
possible occurrences in their life (gossip) and festival
dates.
In addition to this, I have also targeted this age
range as these teenagers want access to
possible music festival dates which they could
go to which can both benefit the consumer and
the music magazine itself in the sense that we
(the music magazine) are providing legitimate
music festival dates to the consumer who might
want to start regularly buy more of this issue.
15. Connotations behind the Mood Board

Source: http://www.clashmusic.com/features/while-were-young-adam-horovitz
The images that have been formatted into the last 2 slides imply what kind of artists, colours & styles
we are looking to format into our music magazine.
Young & upcoming artists who are starting to make their name for themselves, for example Rita Ora &
Ed Sheeran & Taylor Swift who are already a big draw in the music industry and the reason they are a
big draw is the reason why we want them to be on the front cover and double page spread of our
music magazine.
The colours of the footwear and clothes that are demonstrated in the mood boards illustrated to us,
and the consumers of our product/service which we are looking to display in our music magazine
whether that is in the form of an advertisement or something else within the music magazine.
In conclusion to this, the mood board as seen in the previous two slides symbolise the future issues
for Smash Music Magazine over the next few years. Artists such as ED Sheeran & Dizzie Rascal are
artists we want to continue to build up in order to grant them with a positive reputation regardless
the artist.
16. Masthead Font Styles
Drop Capital: I will be using this for my drop capital for the simple reasons that it will be
consistent within every double page spread of our music magazine. Furthermore it may not
stand out from the crowd, but it is constant and consistent so it can easily be outlined and
referred to as a Drop Capital.
Title of Artist: Now for this font style, there are two types so that indicates a certain level of
inconsistency however a level of variation which is also gratifying when it comes font styles.
These two font styles are bold, and in similarity with the drop capital font styles but are
consistent and are easy on the eye for the consumers of our product/service we are offering.
17. Masthead Font Styles
As demonstrated below, this colour is represented throughout Smash Music Magazine of the
colour that is displayed below. The image below is cropped from my front cover in which the
colour is the background of my front cover.
The E below is a cropped screenshot from my double page spread in which the E is the start of
the word “Eminem” and as you can see the colours are practically the same which symbolises a
certain level and degree of consistency when it comes to the colours consistency throughout
the front cover and double page spread.
Additionally, the Stand first is yet again represented with the same colour of tone with the
other two screenshots beside the stand first and yet again this illustrates a certain level of
consistency in terms of the colours not being different to each other in the front cover and
double page spread.
19. Personnel Costs

http://work.chron.com/yearly-salary-magazine-editor-4078.html Chief
Editor: £38,000 to £50,000 per year, We want an editor who is serious, commanding and transparent in
the sense that they are honest, and are not afraid to voice their opinions about anything.
Source:
http://www.prospects.ac.uk/magazine_journalist_salary.htm
Writer: £18,000 to £35,000 per year, A writer for our music magazine will need to be determined, work
hard and have a basic general knowledge in the music industry.
20. Personnel Costs
Source: http://education-
portal.com/articles/Magazine_Photographer_Job_Duties_Salary_and_Outlook.html
Photographer: £26,000 to 35,000 per year, We are looking for someone who is consistent
and gets the job done, no qualifications will make you a stronger candidate than others.
The main costs that we are outlining are for the roles that we feel are vital for our
magazine to become particularly successful and these are Editor, Writer & Photographer.
We feel that the Editor & Writer is considerably important when setting up a magazine as
we need Writers who have been around the world and have the top end bracket of
writing skills & the same goes to the editor in order for our music magazine to be
successful.
Furthermore we yet again need the editor to firstly know what they are doing, but also
have internal qualities such as honesty, pride, leadership & patience with the people that
he would be working with. What I mean by this is that we don’t want our Editor to
become impatient with our writers and therefore produce a divide in the workforce and
we don’t need that when releasing another copy of our music magazine.

22. 3 Important Job Roles ( Clash Magazine)
Source: http://uk.linkedin.com/company/clash-music-group?trk=ppro_cprof
Simon Harper – Editor: Founder / Owner / Editor-In-Chief at Clash Magazine, I run and manage the UK's
most successful independent international music, fashion and lifestyle magazine, Clash. Having co-founded
Clash in 2004, I oversee all editorial, commercial and business decisions regarding the title. Simon Harper’s
main job role is to oversee the whole project that occurs at Clash Magazine and that could be anything
from business decisions regarding the future of clash magazine to the changes in content for Clash
Magazine.
29. Front Cover Analysis
Clash Magazine have on purposely class Rita Ora as
a royal figure in order to lead the audience on so
that the audience could read on to why Clash
Magazine have done this and in particular the main
interview and what sort of questions Clash ask her
for example they are the questions that are easy to
answer and don’t force her into a corner. Moreover
this will be more likely to appeal to the audience
rather than another low key music performer as
everyone known Rita Ora as a worldwide superstar
in the music industry and some might have their
own opinions if she deserves to be placed onto a
pedestal which enables Rita Ora to establish herself
on a big media platform herself.
30. Front Cover Analysis
For this particular magazine, there is a certain
essence and presence about this particular artist
who is Iggy Azalea who is a famous music star to
a point. Clash have attempted to make Iggy
Azalea quite higher class in the sense of the front
cover image of this Clash Magazine issue.
Furthermore this front cover masthead appears
to maintain the readers and even gain more
readers through a different socio economic class
for example, the Iggy Azalea fans/higher class
fans of music that might enjoy the way Iggy
Azalea conducts herself in this issue of Clash
Magazine. Furthermore the secondary
storylines/names in this article represent the
competitors for Iggy Azalea which connote to the
readership/demographic which they (the reader)
may of heard of who could be a threat to Iggy
Azalea’s high standard of position within the
music industry.
31. Front Cover Analysis
The masthead is implanted into the left hand corner
of the page and this is done in order for the
masthead to become easily recognisable towards
the demographic, furthermore the colours play an
integral part in luring the customers to buy this
particular issue of NME music magazine and
especially as the colour are bright red in contrast
towards the rest of the Music Magazine which is old
fashioned colours such as White & Black which
makes the red stand out and therefore makes the
masthead more visible towards the reader’s eye.
This particular issue of NME is very much likely to
target the more senior fans of music for example fans
of this music magazine aged between 25-40 and this
is a result of the main image which is used as the focal
point of this front cover and the rest of this NME
Music Magazine. This main image foreshadows that
the content within the rest of this music magazine will
be very much old school in the sense that this main
image seems to me as if it was photographed 20-30
years ago
32. Front Cover Analysis
Another convention for this particular front cover is the
special edition that this conveys for example
“Anniversary Special” which makes the demand for this
NME music magazine issue even more of a demand. In
addition to this, this connotes towards the reader as it
must be thought by the writers of NME as a very
lucrative edition of this magazine which will attract the
normal readers/possible readers of this music magazine
to this special edition and this is also known as NME’s
U.S.P (Unique Selling Point). Additionally, the front cover
is an essential part of any music magazines in order to
lure the customers in in order to produce the sales that
we have set out for ourselves before the release of our
music magazines. The front cover can also be deemed as
especially significant as the first thing customers see
when looking to purchase a copy of a music magazine is
the front cover, therefore the front cover needs to be
colourful and targeted towards to the demographic in
order to produce the amount of sales that has been set
out by the music magazine beforehand.
33. Double Page Spread Analysis
The title reads taking things higher than ever
before and the artist presented within this
particular double page spread is Kiesza,
furthermore you know immediately what
this is going to be due to the pictures of
these magazines as Kiesza is a very
recognisable name, face and appearance.
This can easily be accessible and appealing
towards the reader as their might be fans of
Kiesza who most likely will want to know the
updates about her possible future of her
career for example festival and tour dates.
Furthermore this artist is a very popular
domestic artist in the UK which attracts a
mass amount of people, Clash would of done
their research on the numbers on how many
people go and see her tour event and based
their decision on the facts & statistics which
would of grown their customer sales based
on the demographic of Kiesza as an artist.
34. Double Page Spread Analysis
Another feature of this double page spread is
the name that is dropped very frequently
within this article of Kiesza’s name, this is done
on a frequent basis to keep the reader attached
towards this double page spread so that the
audience/demographic know who Clash Music
Magazine are talking about within this
particular double page spread. Furthermore
they do this because Kiesza is a big star
domestically and this can retain and attract
members for both Kiesza and Clash Music
Magazine, retain in the sense that within his
article Kiesza states “We are taking things
higher than ever before” which will retain the
fans who will be excited about her future within
the music industry and attract in the sense that
people might have been swayed of how she has
got to the top and might start listening to her
story much more often.
35. Double Page Spread Analysis
The title reads taking things higher than
ever before and the artist presented within
this particular double page spread is
Kiesza, furthermore you know immediately
what this is going to be due to the pictures
of these magazines as Kiesza is a very
recognisable name, face and appearance.
This can easily be accessible and appealing
towards the reader as their might be fans
of Kiesza who most likely will want to know
the updates about her possible future of
her career for example festival and tour
dates. Additionally, the title excites you as
a Kiesza fan as you may want to see her
best music and she is basically connoting
to her fans that she wants to produce her
best music yet in order to thank her fans
for their continued support and this is
more than evident in this double page
spread.
36. Double Page Spread Analysis
The first line of this article with the exception of the copy outlines the
font style for the rest of this double page spread with includes the
font style for example times new roman, Calibri (body/heading). The
reason Clash Music Magazine have done this is because they want a
mature and independent font for this double page spread as I am
sure the rest of the music magazines have done/are doing throughout
all of their double page spreads, and this is also common within
newspapers articles.
The next feature of this double page spread the drop capital which is
on purposely used by Clash Music Magazine in order to attract the
reader to this particular double page spread. Furthermore they make
the first letter of this article big in order establish and outline the
subject of the article, Clash will also promote their magazine within
their own magazine as they have presented it here an example of this
“Clash is set in a little car park off the M25” in addition to this the
first word at the beginning sets out the tone for the rest of the article in
the sense that Kiesza the artist is going in for a clash music single which
might foreshadow her future songs/works within the music industry.
37. Double Page Spread Analysis
Another convention of this NME double page spread is
that NME have deliberately pulled this quote out of
their article as it meant some very high importance “I’ve
been shot for the way I look before, it’s no big thing for
me”, this particular quote pulled off this article
connotes to the reader that one particular member of
The Chapman has been mocked and bullied for the way
they look and even if people are doing it again, that
particular member won’t let it get to him.
The main image for this article conveys the mass
amount of importance for this article as the image of
The Chapman family takes up half of the double page
spread which does not sound a lot, but it generally
takes up 1 full page of an article and it is not one of
those pictures that is fitted into a sub section of the
text, instead it is a massive picture which takes up a full
page a article which would be a equivalent of a regular
sized article.
38. The big headline is displayed states “The
Chapman Family” and this is the recognisable
brand called “The Chapman's” who are a pun
rock band who established this band in 2006.
Moreover the reason NME have done this in
order to establish the remarkable story of
this family, and obviously this double page
spread is dedicated to The Chapman Family
as shows in the picture, title and article.
Furthermore, this double page spread
analyses The Chapman’s family progress as a
band and these are supported by quotes,
stand first, copy & some other conventional
methods which make a double page spread
article seem very professional and mature.
These conventional methods make a double
page spread comparable to the major
organisations such as Kerrang & Mojo.
Double Page Spread Analysis
43. Genre
The denotation of the genre for this music magazine will be an Indie genre music magazine
which I feel is appealing mainly towards the female target age range who might enjoy artists
whose songs are indie based, and therefore want to gain information about upcoming tour and
festival dates.
Furthermore I have also chosen Indie as one of my possible genres as I recently put out a
questionnaire on Survey Monkey and one of my questions that I stated towards the recipients
was “What genre of music do you most enjoy listening to”, the main 2 responses that I received
was that Popular music & Indie music was the joint top genre base of my music magazine, what
this means is that I will be most likely to have a Indie genre based Music Magazines in order to
please the potential customers.
44. Genre
The genre of music magazine will be a popular magazine and this is mainly as a result of my
responses I had received from my primary research, furthermore this is also as a result of Clash
Music Magazine and I will be taking further inspiration from their magazine as I truly believe
that theirs is effective in the sense that they don’t try and make their Music Magazine too
complicated, they just stick to the basics and keep their content, layout, genre and style very
simplistic which makes the Music Magazine very effective
45. Layout
The layout of my indie genre based music magazine on the front cover, but mainly the double
page spread will be very much similar to my indie genre based music magazine as it is easy,
quick, simple and is very effective in its use. Moreover NME are clever in the sense that the
picture is effective in the sense of the amount of area a large picture takes to upload, but also
in order to know what the article is going to be about before you even read the article, or even
the article’s title due to the recognisable band faces within The Chapman Family.
46. Style
I very much like the use of the style of the NME music magazine front cover as the colours are
used are very simple and effective in the sense that they use bold bright colours in order to lure
the customers in against dull but very acute backgrounds, the image below displays the
effectiveness of the front cover colour conventions as by using bright colours against bold
boring colours which makes the colours stand out which results in a more recognisable brand
logo for NME Music Magazine.
47. Layout
The layout of the front cover and double page spread will be very much similar to my music
magazine front cover and double page spread in the sense that in the majority of the front
cover and double page spreads, there are slogans which seem to sum up the articles of this
particular's artists future in the music industry.
This slogan/summary connotes the style in which this article is heading towards to in the sense
that this particular artists sees things in the future that could be hugely benefited towards the
artist (Kiesza), moreover this slogan foreshadows the story of this article as it illustrates the fact
that the questions within this particular article about Kiesza’s possible future within the music
industry.
48. Style
It is very much likely that the style of my front cover and double page spread, and this style is that the font
style with the puff promotion style which are most commonly known as rival bands/artists which are
displayed on the side of a front cover page, furthermore I will be taking further inspiration from Clash
Music Magazine in the sense that Rita Ora is the main focal point about this issue of this magazine.
The puff promotion (rival artists/bands) are displayed on the side and this would connote to the reader
that these artists and bands are just there to make the numbers which foreshadows the fact that later on
within this article it will establish the Rita Ora story.
49. Case Study
Smash Hits was a pop music magazine which was aimed at teenagers and young
adults much to the similarity of our magazine. Due to its mass popularity from
the local demographic and that is represented on how long the magazine lasted
which was from 1978 to 2006 which is 28 years which is an astounding
achievement in itself.
We would say that we have taken mass inspiration from Smash Hits as they
(Smash) were successful for a long period of time which was nearly 3 decades.
So we as an creative organisation knew they had to take a vast amount of
inspiration from Smash due to their recognised success.
However we knew and understood that we couldn’t take too much inspiration
from Smash Hits as the times are changing in the sense that we know that music
magazines in terms of hardcopy have NOT got the same demand as 10-20 years
ago, so we need to adapt our social media and what not in order to be a
success.
51. Why I selected Survey Monkey as my source of
Primary Research
The reasoning behind choosing Survey Monkey as one form of primary research was due to its
efficient in the sense that it gets the job done so I could e-mail my fellow peers from my class
along with some teachers.
Survey Monkey also enables you to analyse your results, so you could analyse how the males
responded to your questions compared to the females who responded.
Furthermore, from each question you can pick out the answers and which were most popular
in order to ease the decision on what genre, spending power and what type of artists I should
include within my music magazine.
52. Primary Research (Survey Monkey)
From this question, “ What would you
normally expect from a popular magazine”,
The main response that I got was that
people mainly want to see interviews with
worldwide superstars and festival reports
and the rest was a minority who want to
see album reviews. Furthermore, from this
particular question I have gained further
knowledge from my music magazine and it
is very much likely that I will be implanting
festival reports and interviews with
worldwide superstars as the main content
for my popular genre type music magazine.
53. Primary Research (Survey Monkey)
This question states “How much would
you be willing to pay for a music
magazine”, nearly half of the people that
answered this questionnaire said between
£1.00-£1.50, however nearly ¾ of people
answered £2.00-£2.50, this connotes to
me that I will be very much likely to be
publishing the price will be between
£2.00-£2.50. The reason for this is that I
want to meet the customers
demands/requirements because if I don’t
I may not be able to sell as many music
magazines as I was planning to do.
54. Primary Research (Survey Monkey)
This question correctly stated “What
type of genre of music are you
interested in?”, This is a bit of a
peculiar instance as both of the
popular and indie sections are bang
on level with each other, as a result
of this it is most likely that the genre
of my music magazine will be a
combination of popular/indie style
genre magazine as that is what the
people want in terms of demand for
this particular music magazine.
55. Primary Research (Survey Monkey)
This question was an overview of is/is
not price important when purchasing a
hardback copy of a music magazine,
moreover the response I got back from
this question was that people would
more than swayed by price as 38% of
people said it would be moderately
important and 46% said it would be quite
important which illustrates to me that I
need to set the ideal price in order to
meet with the customers demands.
While on the other hand, there is a
minor batch of 15% of people that don’t
really mind what they have to pay as long
as they get some decent content within
this music magazine.
56. Primary Research (Survey Monkey)
The response from this question one so
was sided and overwhelming that I
already know what my music magazine
is going to be called and it is going to be
named “Smash” there are two reasons
why I have chosen this title, one of
these reasons are because 84% of 13
people chose this title ahead of
reasonable music magazine names such
as Shoot, Truth & The News of Music so
people must like this title. Moreover
Smash is appealing as it is catchy and I
want to create a recognisable brand
such as other worldwide recognisable
music magazines such as Kerrang & Q.
57. Primary Research (Survey Monkey)
This question states towards the
respondents, “Would you be more likely to
buy a music magazine if it came with free
content”, the main response I got from this
was yes in the sense that the majority of 84%
of people would be more inclined to buy a
music magazine if it came with free content
like a popular’s artists DVD. Furthermore the
minority of 15% of people that said no
suggests to me that my music magazine does
not need to add free content within the
music magazine as the content within my
own personal music magazine is great as it is.
58. Second Form of Primary Research
The second form of Primary Research is done via hardcopy and I will hope to
receive responses from the local demographic who will help me decide what
type of genre my music magazine will be about. Additionally, the first form of
Primary Research was done via online and this was completed on Survey
Monkey and I sent this to the local demographic in order to know what the
demand is for our music magazine.
The Second form of Primary Research will yet again give us a different medium
in terms of research and this type of research will help us make our content
more popular so that our music magazine will hopefully become more
successful. Furthermore the Primary Research will help us develop our Front
Cover & Double Page Spread in order for our Photoshop designs to become
more likeable with the local demographic.
In conclusion, the Primary Research allows the potential fans to interact and
potentially decide monumental decisions and updates about our music
magazines which is vitally important to our development of Smash Music
Magazine.
59. Primary Research Screenshots
As you can see from the screenshot to my left,
my peer has filled in a questionnaire in which
his questions along with 9 others will help us
decide what content, genre and what kind of
price we will format for this forthcoming music
magazine.
Additionally, this particular person has voted for
Rock as his preferred genre that he would like
to see for a brand new music magazine.
Therefore we will take this into serious
consideration when deciding the genre for our
music magazine as there has been for some
time now an increased in demand for a new
music magazine of the genre rock since the
mass success of Kerrang Music Magazine.
60. Primary Research Screenshots
Following the first page of the questionnaire
which was filled out by one of my peers, the
second page entails the final two questions where
we get a fantastic opportunity to work out and see
if this particular person wants to see specific
aspects within a music magazine.
What I mean by this is that we asked “if you would
like to see some free content within a music
magazine” and this person’s reply was yes in
which we believe that the projected answer for
this question over 5-10 will all be yes as customers
are going to say yes to free content as it costs
nothing. Additionally, the second question
pondered “how many hours a week do you listen
to music” and this persons reply was “10-14” per
week which signifies to us that this person loves
to listen to music regardless the occupation &
situation.
61. Primary Research Screenshots
This is another response from an
questionnaire in which I have handed out to
my peers with this person selecting Truth as
the masthead for our new music magazine.
The reasoning we feel he has chosen this as
the masthead is that he wants genuine &
legitimate double page spread articles as
when he reads our magazine he will feel not
only content but also impressive in the
sense that he wants his prayers to be
answered so our magazine is tailor made for
him. However, we can’t just make a music
magazine that is perfect and tailor made for
1 customer as we have to reach out to a
mass audience demographic in order to be
as successful as a music magazine such as
Mojo, Kerrang, & Smash Hits in which we
want not only to match but also eclipse.
62. Primary Research Screen Shots
As you can see from the screenshot to the right,
this person is what I would call the premium
package in the sense that they would pay
£1.50-£2.00 and we take encouragement for
this as this may just be a coincidence or just a
frequent aspect of the local demographic who
would fill in this music magazine.
Additionally what this would mean is that the
price would not need as much as a
consideration as once anticipated as a result of
this answer we may not need to have a
thorough discussion of a price. However we
have to remember that other factors such as
the genre, title of the magazine and how we
advertise and promote this magazine is equally
important and maybe even more important
than the price so we must remember this when
producing this music magazine.
63. Primary Research Screen Shots
Following the first page of the questionnaire
which was filled out by one of my peers, the
second page entails the final two questions
where we get a fantastic opportunity to work
out and see if this particular person wants to
see specific aspects within a music magazine.
What I mean by this is that we asked “if you
would like to see some free content within a
music magazine” and this person’s reply was
yes in which we believe that the projected
answer for this question over 5-10 will all be
yes as customers are going to say yes to free
content as it costs nothing. Additionally, the
second question pondered “how many hours a
week do you listen to music” and this persons
reply was “15-19” that is a long amount of time
to be listening to music but we know we have
someone here who is obviously keen on music
and therefore will be keen on our brand new
music magazine.
65. Age & Gender
Hartley's 7 subjectivities are as follows: Age, Gender, Class, Ethnicity. Self-Image, Nation &
Family.
The first idea of my magazine will be in much similarity than to our Music Magazine of
inspiration which is Clash Music magazine in which their age for their magazine is based around
teenagers from the age of 13-18, this is truly down to the content that is within this magazine
and the age range can be hugely beneficial/detrimental towards the future and secureness of
Clash Music Magazine.
Secondly the gender of my magazine will openly be viable for both Male & Female in the sense
that it is our idea that our music magazine will hopefully be appealing to both Male & Female
as there are contents which is based on the best interests of our demographics.
Next, the socio economic class that this music magazine will target itself within will be a
combination a C2 & D socio economic class in which these two classes are student related
classes & people within the C2 class who listen to music on a regular basis. Moreover these two
socio economic classes will be used within this Music Magazine will be determined on the
chosen content used on my Music Magazine.
66. Age & Gender

68. Age & Gender
The Hartley’s seven subjectivities are Age, Gender, Class, Ethnicity, Self-Image, Nation & Family.
For the second idea of my music magazine, I would assume that the specific target audience is
based on bands and main fans of music which would be aimed from the ages of 17-30 and this
would also be appealing to both genders (Male + Female).
Secondly, the gender for my Indie style music magazine will be both suitably available for both
Male & Females as this Indie style music magazines which would be suitable for the target as
they would either get weekly updates within the content, or fortnightly releases of the indie
music magazine which would inform and educate the target audience about the on goings
within the music industry.
The socio economic class that this second choice music magazine will categorise itself from
within I believe will be another combination, however this time being C1 & C2 in the socio
economic needs. Furthermore C1 & C2 mainly means working class people who normally work
in the office who enjoy their music on a regular basis to a point where they want to further
extend their knowledge of music.
69. Age & Gender
This music magazine which was inspired from NME music magazine suggests to the reader that
the main ethnicity group that are recommended to read my indie style music magazine will be
the white ethnicity group as this music magazine is indie genre based which normally appeals
to the mass group of white skin population.
The image I will be trying to accomplish with my second choice genre based indie style
magazine is a music magazine which will either recap the latest news for example gossip, tour
and festival dates of popular artists and to introduce new and upcoming bands to indie genre
based fans.
The last subjectivities I will be talking about will be the family aspect of Hartley’s theory in the
sense that your position and age within your respected family will have an impact whether you
will fully understand the concept and the content of my music magazine an example of this is
that a 55 year old male/female parent might not be as heavily influenced as a 17-30 year old
either male/female would normally be with this type of music magazine.
70. Age & Gender
Ethnicity will play an integral part within this music magazine as all races are open to read this
music magazine in the sense that some magazines have genres that make in unlikely for some
ethnicity groups to not read their magazine, in contrast to my magazine there are artists for all
of the ethnicity groups an example of this is hip hop for African American & pop for White
ethnicity based people.
The way I see my magazine is a way that it will appeal to the customers/demographics as my
music magazine is entitle to everyone who enjoys listening to music and also enjoys the
information, updates, ingoing’s, outgoing’s within the music industry. Furthermore the self
image I am trying to promote towards my customers/members/demographic is a weekly music
magazine which entails the latest news with the artists which can include gossip, tour and
festival dates and this is what I am trying to accomplish with my Music Magazine.
The place of the family you are positioned in is a very integral part in the customer’s willingness
to purchase a copy of my Music Magazine as the content of my Music Magazine is dependent
on the position member of the family, an example of this would be if a member of the family is
aged from 13-19, and is in my category in terms of the audience target age range, then the
Music Magazine would be more than suitable for them rather than a family member who is
more senior such as a mother/father would not be very suited to my Music Magazine as the
content would not be correct for them.
71. Spending Power
The price of the magazine could potentially be detrimental dependent on the price and how
much you are paying in terms of how much money per week do you have to pay if the music
magazine comes out weekly, fortnightly, or possibly monthly. This can be detrimental towards
the music magazines financial future if people do not want to pay let’s say £3.50 for a magazine
that comes out every week.
Furthermore as a result of the pricing being a focal factor of the music magazine to keep on
providing solid service for their customers, I would therefore need to get the price of the
magazine ideal for the customers and the price would also be dependent on the release of the
music magazine.
72. Spending Power
This question states “How much would you be willing to pay for a music magazine”, nearly half
of the people that answered this questionnaire said between £1.00-£1.50, however nearly ¾ of
people answered £2.00-£2.50, this connotes to me that I will be very much likely to be
publishing the price will be between £2.00-£2.50. The reason for this is that I want to meet the
customers demands/requirements because if I don’t I may not be able to sell as many music
magazines as I was planning to do. Furthermore people will be willingly to pay £1.00-£1.50 for a
weekly running music magazine as the customers/members want a direct source of information
about the ingoing's, outgoing's news and updates about the music industry.
73. How does it appeal to the viewers/readership?
An Indie style genre based music magazine would definitely appeal to casual
music fans, and most appealing to hard-core music (Indie genre based) fans, my
music magazine would also be appealing to the viewers/readership as it would
give them a solid service in which we would gain money from the sales and in
which the customers/viewers/readership would gain top quality content which
would inform them about the music industry.
74. How does it appeal to the viewers/readership?
My Music Magazine appeals to the viewers/readership in the sense that the content of the stories are
suitable for the target age range which is 13-19 years of age, so as a result of this my content is more than
suitable for the average target aged reader (13-19) which will benefit both parties, us (Music Magazine) in
the sense that we will get sales left, right and centre if the content of the stories are right for our target
age range and also in terms of the customer as they will get the correct content of the stories which is
hugely beneficial to their morale.
In addition to this, the cover lines also entail what else is contained within a issue of this particular
magazine as the Music Magazine’s content is not only about the main front cover, but also about the
secondary stories which is more commonly known as cover lines which are there just to make up space
and inform the reader of what they are getting themselves into.

78. Income
We will mainly get our income from our
advertising and profit from sales as
advertisement will be placed on our pages
in order to gain income and the other
main source of income will be our profit
sales.

greatly towards the profit side of the Profit/Loss breakdown.

increased or decreased for the second year but that is
majorly dependent on what profit or what loss I have
made.

83. Production Process
Source: http://contentmarketinginstitute.com/2011/08/6-steps-for-producing-a-
custom-magazine/
Prior to the production and the printing of Clash’s Music Magazine, Clash would need
to create a production schedule in order to help to oversee the production in the
time slot available. Additionally deadlines need to be punctual in the sense that
Clash must be reliable with the deadlines so that Clash get the story submitted to the
editors on time, this is important for Clash to be punctual in order for our reputation
to stay intact.
Conventionally, a content plan needs to be created which Clash should illustrate all of
the pages within a music magazine such as Clash’s for example the front covers and
double page spreads will be within the content plan along with the advertising
spaces & posters. Therefore, this plan would need to be confirmed by all of the team
involved in the content of Clash’s Music Magazine .
84. Production Process
Clash would need to create a detailed plan for each story that they are planning to
publish and print, therefore Clash would need to seriously consider the content of a
story to check if it matches the target audience in hand. Additionally, aspects of the
music magazine for Clash would also need to be considered before publishing &
printing articles, interviews, news stories which would need to be considered to
make sure that they are fit for purpose in reference to the target audience.
Furthermore, the mock-ups is one of the most easiest processes within this actual
process as Clash would need to communicate well with the author to both be on the
same page with the quality of the design, the last part of this aspect of this
production process bit part is that the authors need to correctly select which author
is the best fit for purpose & once this is done, deadlines can be submitted.
Next, Clash would need to proof read their stories to see if they are breaking any
ethical & legal codes with the content that they are submitting along with any
spelling errors which really should not be occurring at this level in the music
magazine industry.
85. Production Process
The last stages include checking to see if there are any grammatical errors and this
could be anything from punctuation to actual word spelling or just words in a
sentence which just don’t make any sense at all. Furthermore, once all of this
completed the distribution technically starts from Clash sending the prints to the
warehouse in which the warehouse take part in the main distribution and then sell to
the public.
86. ASA & IPSO (Legal & Ethical Issues)
Source: http://www.pcc.org.uk/cop/practice.html
A music magazine such as Kerrang, NME, Q, Clash & so on would need to review their
advertising for their own products, or their own personal made magazine and they would
review this by taking it up with the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) in which the ASA
would see if the advert is suitable to publish towards the general public. An example of this
would be if a certain product was advertised before going through the process, then the likely
outcome would be that the specific company would be fined, and also reprimanded for this
legal action they have taken.
My newly designed music magazine will need to know the constraints and boundaries of the
PCC (Press Complaints Commission) which can influence the reputation for my music magazine,
for instance if an advertisement of my music magazine is deemed as unsuitable for my chosen
age range, a group of parents, senior members of public may report this sensitive report of this
poorly managed advert.
87. ASA & IPSO, Legal & Ethical Issues
I must make sure that my music magazine should definitely make sure my music magazine do not publish
information within our articles that are “inaccurate, misleading or distorted information which includes
pictures”, what this means is that my music magazine cannot publish stories that are untrue and we must
publish stories/articles that are 100% completely true. Furthermore if my music magazine has incorrectly
stated something which is untrue about a pop star in the music industry, the PCC/IBSO will send us a letter
regarding us to change the error immediately which can remove the risk of hindering the reputation of my
music magazine. In order for our music magazine to avoid any legal or ethical issues with the public, we must
abide by these clauses for example our articles must be genuine and we must make sure that we make it
very clear and understandable between a fact and a comment.
88. Ethical & Legal Issues that apply to our Music
Magazine
Source: https://www.ipso.co.uk/IPSO/index.html
There are a variety of issues that apply to our music magazine whether they are ethical or
legally.
Firstly we must make sure that all of the information and content within our magazine is NOT
false nor in accurate, furthermore we must clearly outline what is a fact if we decide to put
certain content within our music, an example of this could be that WE MUST provide tour date
information which is true because if we don’t we are fooling the fans and it could also have
financial implications on our music magazine in the long term.
Another example of a ethical/legal issue which applies to our music magazine would be if we
were to go ahead and review a music single, or an album WE MUST then be fair and equal to
the artist/band in hand and if we were to be negative towards their single/album we must
justify our reasons and reach a settlement.
These are all important ethical & legal issues that all music magazines must abide by in order to
not fall into any legal trouble and this could be anything from printing anything that is a lie to
non biased opinion when it comes to album reviews and we must do this in order to yet again
fall into any legal or ethical trouble which could displease the fans of our music magazine.
89. How to make complaint to IBSO & ASA
IPSO:
Source: https://www.ipso.co.uk/IPSO/index.html
In order to complain towards the IBSO about something they have viewed/read, they will need
the IPSO to view their complaint and see if they deem it worthy enough to prosper with the
complaint.
For example if the complaint was worthy enough, the IPSO would then write to the editor
about the concerns that have been raised from a particular member of the public. The IBSO are
always aiming to find the suitable solution for everyone so that everyone feels content about
the decision made.
If the complaint is legitimate, it may resort the organisation apologizing if it was just a simple
typing error. However it is very rare that the PCC will state that financial outcome will be
rewarded due to this complaint.
90. How to make complaint to IBSO & ASA
ASA:
Source: http://asa.org.uk/Consumers/How-to-complain.aspx
Firstly, the person complaining must be 100% sure that the complaint needs to be covered by the ASA.
Once this is sorted out, you can simply complain online, via phone or even write to the ASA all suitable
options.
The ASA will then grant the name of the person who will deal with you complaint and what steps you are
taking in order to grant this complaint.
The ASA have a very strong reputation of finding a solution to complaints, but these complaints do not have
a specified time period of how long it should take, an example of this is that it could be a very short amount
of time or even a very long amount of time.
A formal investigation should be made where the ASA will contact all parties which need to be contacted in
order to try and find some evidence to further support the complaint.
ASA always publish their rulings and the solution to all of the complaints, furthermore they take every step in
order to make sure that the decision is suitable towards all parties involved in this.
91. Copyright
It is vitally important in order for every type of magazine whether that be music to have a copyright logo in
order to source, and officially be aware that the information is from a different organisation. This is further
important to include as it could have serious financial implications on any type of music magazine.
The copyright logo needs to be formatted in a spot where it is easily viewed so that everyone knows that
all rights are reserved to the original company. Furthermore the copyright symbol could be detrimental as
if you have not stated where you have got certain information from, you could potentially get sued and as
a result, lose a mass amount of money as a result of this failure to display the copyright logo in a
document.
92. Case Study In Association With Copyright
Source: http://99designs.com/designer-blog/2013/04/19/5-famous-copyright-infringement-cases/
Within the music industry, a particularly famous and controversial case was deemed as: Vanilla Ice
VS David Bowie/ Freddie Mercury. This case originally stared in 1991 when Vanilla Ice came out with
the hit which was called “Ice Ice Baby” which is very notoriously known to be confused as of who
actually wrote this famous song. When sampling the song Vanilla Ice did not choose to credit the
artist who originally wrote this song and this was David Bowie. Even though denying this
accusation. In eventuality Vanilla Ice later reviewed statement saying that it was a joke, this
therefore lead to a settlement in court in which Vanilla Ice paid an undisclosed amount of money
and therefore crediting David Bowie & Queen for the song that he sampled and released.
93. What does an complaint form look like
As you can see this is a “Google
Complaint” and this complaint form
would be in much similarity to a
PCC/IBSO & ASA complaint form as all of
the aspects and components as you can
see on the left will be likely to be the
same of the complaints that music
magazine fans will file. Additionally, as
you can see this file complaint makes you
side track during this complaint “Do you
use Google regularly” and if the person
making the complaint does not use
Google regularly they make cancel their
complaint and never send their complaint
which will in eventuality make Google
look even better as they
94. Conclusion
Within this particular LO2 I have learned a fair bit of information about what
you need to do in order to correctly produce a music magazine and this can
be anything from understanding the copyright, legal & ethical issues
involved when wanting to use a particular logo to the actual production
process. However, in my opinion I can clearly see now that our biggest
strength now is our feedback form and the feedback that we had received
from potential customers who might be interested in our music magazine
and therefore we could use this vital information to our clear advantage to
entice the audience in to purchasing a copy of our music magazine when it
becomes available.
