Hello:
Fellow Harbordites!
I hope all is well and
that everyone had a chance
to enjoy the fantastic sum-
mer & fall weather that
2016 has brought our
way! As I write this, I wit-
ness our first snowfall and
see the most perfect snow-
flake fall on my window.
As proud contributing mem-
bers of the Harbord Club,
we want to help you stay
connected to the past as we
move into the future. With
this said, may I present to
you the next edition of the
Harbordite.
As one of Toronto’s oldest
high schools, Harbord C.I.
has a lot to show for it.
The Harbord Club Directors
have teamed up with both
the current staff and stu-
dents to make Harbord
former staff and alumni,
we hope to reconnect you
with your wonderful high
school & old friends!
You should all be excited
to attend our festivities
and I hope that most of
you are in the midst of
preparing both the Gala
registration forms and
your cheques and sending
them out to us as you
don’t want to miss out on
this event!! We ask that
you RSVP sooner rather
than later to our Gala
evening on the 29th
of
April as we are expecting
an overwhelming number
of attendees. As space is
limited, and table selec-
tion will be on a first reg-
istration and paid basis,
we highly suggest pur-
chasing your tickets early
to avoid disappointment.
Please note that we have
included the Registration
form in this issue.
Those on Facebook proba-
bly already know of a fab-
C.I.’s 125 anniversary a mile-
stone event!! We are in the
process of organizing the
school open- house with an
array of activities happening.
Our students and staff will
be setting up decade rooms,
putting on a fashion show and
musical and drama perfor-
mances of the decades past
just to name a few.
I am personally ecstatic
about this event. Whenev-
er I am in the company
of other Harbordites, I find
myself talking about the
plans that have been in the
works for some time now
with great excitement. The
Saturday evening Gala is all
set and we are awaiting re-
ceipt of your registration. If
you are ever in the neigh-
bourhood, look for a beauti-
ful banner on the front of
the school announcing our
events!
To everyone who has had any
connection with Harbord
C.I., we hope to make this a
memorable occasion. To our
3. ulous group on there.
About seven years ago, I
decided to start a group
on Facebook dedicated to
anyone who had ever grad-
uated, worked at or at-
tended Harbord even for a
short time. I am proud to
report that this group,
“Harbord C.I. Grads/
Alumni” has over 1000
members! We, as a com-
mittee, are committed to
spreading the word about
our celebratory event
through the powers of
technology & social media
and ask that you help us
spread the word too.
In the last little while, we
have had many alumni
come by the school for a
visit, some even to donate
items to be placed in our
in-school Museum. If you
would like to come by or
donate to our repository,
send us an email and we
can make arrangements.
It is quite remarkable how
many things are currently

displayed in the Harbord Ar-
chives that conjure up memo-
ries of days past. The Muse-
um itself contains 15 glass
front cabinets, four storage
cabinets, a wall panel and a
special wall alcove dedicated
to the 1992 time cap-
sule. Our ever-growing ar-
chival collection includes val-
uable records of facts, oc-
currences, anecdotes, biog-
raphies & books along with
treasured photos, trophies
and artifacts. The Harbord
Museum continues to be a
showroom for generations of
Harbord students, past, pre-
sent and future.
According to The Happy
Ghosts Of Harbord, a publi-
cation that traces the histo-
ry of the school from its
opening in 1892 until its cen-
tennial in 1992, the first
tenth anniversary reunion
was held in January of
1902. The first and second
major anniversaries occurred
in the midst of the two
Great Wars; her 25th
in 1917
and her 50th
in 1942, both
before I was even born!
Her 75th
was celebrated in
1967 and I have been told
it was a grand occasion that
included alumni represent-
ing all past decades span-
ning 1892 to the late
1960’s. Wow!
The next big event on rec-
ord occurred during my
student days at Harbord
C.I. and I chose to assist as
a student volunteer at her
90th
anniversary in June of
1981. I knew then and
there that I wanted to
stay involved with this
great school.
In May of 1992, The Har-
bord Club hosted Harbord’s
Centennial, an event that
was attended by many and
spoken about to this day.
After attending this mile-
stone event, I was certain
that Harbord C.I. would
continue to be an integral
part of my life.
In 1997, I proudly became
a member of the HCI staff

12. In Memory of Syd Moscoe ‘52
On February 23, of this year, the Harbord C.I. community suf-
fered a tremendous loss. Syd Moscoe, Harbord C.I. alumnus (class
of ’52), passed away unexpectedly.
In memory of Syd Moscoe, A scholarship in his name has been created.
If you would like to make a contribution, Please write cheque to The
Harbord Charitable Foundation and in the Memo line, write for Syd
Moscoe Scholarship.
13. In Memory of Syd Moscoe ‘52
It is Months later and Syd’s presence and guidance are still
missed. A few of Harbord’s staff have shared some brief
thoughts on Syd.
“Syd was a dear friend, the chair of the Harbord Club (alumni associa-
tion), a Director of the Harbord Charitable Foundation (Harbord
awards and scholarships) and the school’s Museum curator. For years,
he worked once a week with our Museum student volunteers maintain-
ing the archives in the club museum and its virtual museum, organizing
the incoming submissions for the displays as well as helping organize
Remembrance Day observances.
Syd was like my school dad; he looked out for me. We chatted about
everything! I am so pleased that he got to know my daughter and
granddaughter who would attend our monthly club meetings.
Syd had a passion for his alma mater and I know he was was so looking
forward to working alongside the rest of the Harbord Club Directors
in preparation for Harbord’s upcoming 125th
Birthday celebra-
tions. All I can say, is… I hope we make Syd proud and that he knows
how I miss him so!”
-Belinda Medeiros-Felix (Harbord Alumna, HCI Staff and Club Direc-
tor)
“When I think of Syd, the fond memories include seeing him rushing
down the main floor hallway with his briefcase in hand and always with
a warm smile. No matter how rushed he was, he would always stop to
talk to me or anyone who crossed his path in the hallway. He never
forgot to ask about my children by name. Syd's ability to memorize

people's names and numerous details was amazing and it is with fond
memories that I often think of him as one of Harbord's biggest assets.
He will be eternally remembered for his many contributions to Harbord
Collegiate and the pride he fostered for our school.
Goodbye our friend..”
Alice Freitas
Former Student and current Teacher
“Syd was one of those people who actively create community around
themselves. Around the Harbord community, he was a doer of deeds,
connector of people and a force who propelled projects forward. To say
hi to Syd and ask him what he was up to was often to find yourself
shortly thereafter holding something, fetching something, fixing some-
thing, building something, arranging something, calling someone, meet-
ing with someone and generally rolling up your sleeves and getting
something done (or at least feeling that you should at be doing some-
thing). His passion for connecting the students with the past of the in-
stitution and experiences of former students and providing opportuni-
ties for current Harbord students was relentless. He wasn't about the
spotlight for himself in his work around the school, he wanted the
spotlight to be on the students past and present and in general "It's
for Harbord...it's for the community...it's for the students." was his
approach in the building and around the Harbord community. His Har-
bord club, Harbord museum and Remembrance Day work was invaluable
to helping this place keep a sense of itself past and present.
...I could add more like his passion for cool artifacts and history and
how fun it was to connect around that kind of thing, but unfortunately
I gotta run to class!”
Aaron Magney
15. “I worked with Syd for some 8 years every Wednesday in our Har-
bord museum. During that time, I found Syd to be a person with
many talents. He was a very intelligent man who also knew how to
connect people to the tasks that needed to be done. What made
Syd special however were his other attributes which are harder to
find. Syd was kind. He was honest. Syd had integrity. He worked
tirelessly and selflessly to celebrate and preserve Harbord’s history.
He would always regale students with his stories. Every year Syd
would attend our Remembrance Day ceremony which he always had a
hand in shaping. At the end of every ceremony, he would always have
tears in his eyes. My last Wednesday with Syd was a quiet one. Stu-
dents had left early and so we just chatted. Syd was like that. He
always had time for you. On that last Wednesday he spoke about his
family and his wife Lee, about how proud he was of them. Syd was a
loving man and he will be missed. We at Harbord were fortunate to
have had Syd. I just wish that we could have had him for a bit long-
er.”
Daniel Le Blanc
“Mr. Moscoe and his Museum were a port in a storm. Whenever Mr.
Moscoe was working in the Museum I would stop in to have a little
chat and see what he was up to. These little visits were a calming and
pleasant experience for me after a hectic day. I miss the interesting
conversations and his gentle ways very much.”

16. My Mentor
You were not only my mentor,
But you were my friend, my uplifter, my giant
As I stood on your shoulders, you carried me through,
Hesitation, Hopelessness, Confusion, with
Strength, Wholeheartedness, Excitement
Your words,
Your wisdom,
Your warmth,
Became a constant, my lived reality
Seven years was not enough,
To be supported by you,
To be cared by you,
To be guided by you,
...To be your mentee.
I will miss you.

much cared for our school, our school's history and Harbord stu-
dents. A pleasure to talk to and a pleasure to have known him.”

20. Remembrance Day at Harbord C.I.
by Leah Bekiaris & Nastasia-Simonida Krstic
(Harbord Museum Student Volunteers)
Remembrance Day
at Harbord C.I.
On Friday, November 11th,
2016, the Harbord Museum Club
put on its annual Remembrance
Day assembly. It was decided
that this year’s theme would be
to acknowledge acts of bravery
that were performed in a sub-
tle, yet still very powerful way
during times of war.
Embedded with performances
by Harbord’s school band and
choir, the assembly consisted of
students telling the story of a
nurse named Carola Douglas; a
graduate of Harbord Collegiate
Institute, who was a prime ex-
ample of women showing quiet
acts of courage during difficult
times of war and chaos.
Assigned to the Canadian hospi-
tal ship, the Llandovery Castle,
Carola Douglas served as a nurse
overseas. When the ship was
unexpectedly attacked by a
German U-boat, the nursing sis-
ters had to react in a calm and
quick manner as they knew
there was little hope of survival.
Without a cry or complaint,
Carola Douglas, in addition to
the thirteen other devoted
nurses, continued to take care
of the patients and reassured
all crew-members.
As Douglas’ story was being told
by the students at the podium,
pauses were taken to indicate
the different milestones of her
life and to allow various student
performances to occur. Exam-
ples were as such… a choral by
Jean-Sebastien Bach, a medley
of Nightfall in Camp, the Last
Post arranged by Tom Wade-
West, and the classic poem; “In
Flanders Fields” written by
Lieutenant-Colonel John
McCrae.
We aimed to have our two
minutes of silence as close as
possible to 11:00 AM. Before
asking the audience to rise, we
were certain to mention that
they would be hearing the Last
Post after the moment of si-
lence, followed by the Reveil,
and ending with either a dismis-
sal or “Flander’s
Fields” (depending on which
group of students was present
as we had two assemblies).
Harbord’s Museum Club made
sure the Remembrance day
assembly captured the es-
sence of strength, bravery
and perseverance. The dark-
er themes of war and chaos
thrived throughout the tell-
ing of Douglas’ story, yet at
the same time, there were
immense levels of hope, hero-
ism, and kindness.
Douglas’ story helped to edu-
cate the students at Harbord
about the great people that
attended their school; her
story showed the audience
that quiet acts of valor did
exist during the war, espe-
cially surrounding women, and
that they are just as im-
portant as a story from the
front lines.

Scholarships and Awards. Each year, in the Autumn, a grand total is
paid out in various amounts at our Awards ceremony and at Commence-
ment. Thank you for your generous contributions!
The Harbord Charitable Foundation is pleased to announce that a total
of $7216.50 has been paid out this year in awards and scholarships to
Harbord students and graduates. The Harbord Charitable Foundation
administered the funds for all these awards and scholarships named af-
ter and honouring former students and staff.
47. The Harbord Club
The Harbord Club is an alumni association that was established to maintain a sense of
common identity among former students and staff. It was established to share news
and reconnect Harbordites. The Directorate, on your behalf, are responsible for the
upkeep of the in-school museum, the Hall of Remembrance and the 2 historical war
monuments. We are in much need of monetary donations to help us with the above men-
tioned and also toward the funding of new scholarships, publication of the Harbordite,
and for the preparations for our upcoming 125th Anniversary festivities.
We need you to know that monies donated to The Charitable Foundation cannot be used
by the Harbord Club. If you would like to help us with any of the things mentioned
above it would be much appreciated.
As we plan for the 125th
Anniversary Festivities, we are finding that our financial needs
are greater. As you know, our mandate has been to raise money for scholarships and so
your donations have gone into the Foundation Account.
At this time, we are calling on all Harbordites to send in a donation to The Harbord
Club for all other expenses.
Charitable tax receipts will be issued for
donations of $50.00 and over. All cheques
of $50.00 and over for which a charitable
receipt is required should be made payable
to “Harbord Charitable Foundation,”
and on the face of the cheque in the memo
line insert the words
“For the Harbord Club.”
For any amount less than $50.00 or if a receipt is not required, please make the cheque
payable to “Harbord Club.”We want to thank you for your continued support for your
alma mater, and we hope to see you at the reunion in April 2017.
Onward Harbord!
