3. Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends,
A little late I know, but Happy New Year!
I recently found this quote: "Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as
if they were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all the care,
kindness, and understanding you can muster, and do it with no thought of
any reward. Your life will never be the same again."
That quote was written by Og Mandino, a Christian who wrote several selfhelp books, and he was the author of ten scrolls for a life changing way of
living; the titles include: Today I will begin a new life; I will greet this day
with love in my heart; I will persist until I succeed; I will live this day as
if it is my last; I will pray for guidance… All good titles for the Christian
life!
It is difficult to live each day on ‘full throttle’, throwing ourselves into life
as though today is all there is; but every morning when we awake, someone
somewhere is leaving this world – and that thought should help us
appreciate and make the most of the day we have been gifted.
February is the month with Valentine’s day, a time of showing appreciation
for loved ones with gifts of chocolate, flowers and cards; it always
seemed to me to be a shame that such things were only celebrated once a
year, and I am sure that many shower such gifts more often…
But the gifts we can share with all every day are far more telling; the gift
of God’s love, of our time and attention, are far more valuable. To live
with kindness and understanding, to live with love in our hearts, to pray
daily for guidance, to give thanks for each new day as the gift of life that
it is – this is to make the most of our days.
May we all succeed this year in living our days.

Some notes on the visiting preachers.

Mrs. Margaret Smith is a Methodist Lay Preacher. She has led
services at HFC on a number of occasions. This time, she will be
accompanied by a puppet.

Jim Holman is a Methodist preacher. He has lead services at
HFC in the past.
v David and Alison Hawthorn are new members of HFC. David has
contributed articles for Catalyst. They are taking the lead in two
groups at HFC.
Churches Together in Hayes
At the January meeting, it was decided that the Lent Course this year
would once again follow the York Course of booklets as it did over
several years.
The meetings will be held in the small hall at Hayes Free Church starting on Tuesday 11 March at 7.30 p.m. The course will run for 5 weeks.
It was also decided that we will again have an
Agape meal which is to be held at Hayes Free Church
on Friday 9th May 2014 at 7.00 p.m.
The speaker and more details will be announced later.
Please keep the date free for this enjoyable evening which we share
with friends from other Churches in Hayes.
Real love is not based on romance, candle light dinner and walks
along the beach. In fact, love is based on respect, compromise, care
and truth.

Hayes Mothers’ & Toddlers’ Club
We welcome all babies and children under school age, accompanied
by their parents, grandparents or carers, to our club on Friday
afternoons between 2 and 4pm during term time. The fee is £1 per
family – tea, squash and biscuits are provided. This is a time when
adults can meet up, while the children in their care are busy playing
with toys and activities in the company of other children.
On February 7th and 14th, we are planning to hold a 'Sell and Buy
table' where people can bring in any children's clothes toys or
equipment that they wish to sell clearly labelled with their name and
asking price. These can be displayed for sale on the table. The
money taken goes straight to the seller.
Our half term is on February 21st when there is no meeting.
We look forward to seeing you.

9. Women’s Contact Coffee Morning
We will be holding the next coffee morning in the Small
Hall on the 8th of February from 10.00am to 12.00 Noon.
In March, the coffee morning will also be on the 8th.
We are continuing to raise monies to contribute to disaster
relief funds in different parts of the world.
We hope to see you at the Coffee Mornings, and why not bring a
friend?
Please note that the monies raised from the coffee mornings are
separate from those raised through the refreshments trolley after
Sunday morning services.

The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th
Sunday of each month.
In February the stall will be held on the 9th and the 23rd.

airtrade Fortnight will take place from the 24th of February to
the 9th of March. The “Big Brew is a main event during this time.
This year, some of the world’s smallest and poorest smallholder
farmers will be supported.
We will be joining in with the Big Brew on the last
weekend of Fairtrade Fortnight: üSaturday 8th March - The Women’s Coffee
Morning will be involved.
üSunday, 9th March - A contribution will be
made from the takings of the Fairtrade stall which
will be open after the Morning Service.

10. Basic Caring Communities (BaCC)
Christian volunteers wanted to support ex- prisoners
This email was received on the 15th of January
................. We are in urgent need of more Christian volunteers to support
ex-offenders trying to resettle into London communities. We would be very
grateful if you could promote our project.
BaCC has been running for several years from Wandsworth and Brixton
prisons, and is now also operating from HMP Pentonville (Islington). During
the first crucial months after release, what with housing problems, benefit
delays and the unlikelihood of being able to find employment, the odds
are stacked against the ex-prisoner managing to stay out of trouble. Our
trained volunteers offer a daily supportive phone call and a willingness to
meet if required to help deal with practical issues. The whole group gets
together once a week, giving the ex-prisoner a positive social network
and focus, the chance to offload frustrations and thrash out areas of
concern – as well as simply to enjoy a cup of coffee in the congenial
company of positive role-models.
Our volunteers benefit too. They can enhance their own learning and skills,
but more importantly, perhaps, appreciate the opportunity to put their
faith into direct action - a faith that acknowledges we all make mistakes,
but all (thanks to the grace of God and not our merit) have the right to a
fresh start – as many times as it takes.
We run monthly Taster sessions and trainings and provide supervision and
support to our volunteers. Our next Taster session is scheduled for:
Saturday 22nd February 2014, from 10.00am to 12.30pm. At Pact office:
Park Place, 12 Lawn Lane, Vauxhall, London, SW8 1UD.
As space is limited, volunteers will need to contact me
(maria.dimouli@prisonadvice.org.uk) to book a place.
Attending the session doesn’t commit volunteers to anything, it just gives
the information. By the end of the session, attendees will have:
• understood the rationale and purpose of the BaCC project,
• understood the volunteering role and the level of commitment,
• explored your own motivation for volunteering,
• understood the values and culture of BaCC and a BaCC group
• and gained an insight into the types of ex-prisoners you might support.
Please note that volunteers would need to get to our Central Office in
Vauxhall for their training and interview but, after their recruitment, they will
be able to volunteer in a London area of their choice.

Women's World Day of Prayer
-------------This year the Service will be led by St. Mary's Parish
Church.
The Service will be held at St. Mary's
at 2 p.m. on Friday 7th March 2014.
The Service has been prepared by Christian women of
Egypt and is entitled "Streams in the Desert”.
Hayes Ladies Choir will lead the singing ,
as well as singing their own anthem.
Refreshments will be available after the Service and all
are welcome; men and women,

Sue was contacted by a mum of one of the Pickhurst Infants children
who came to HFC for the carol service, and she asked if she would
write something to go on the Internet in Huffington Post.
The journalist's preamble and the first part of the questions and
answers follow.
Christmas is celebrated by all and is a great time for reflection. At a
time when God of all faiths is 'under attack' and Christianity in
particular is described by religious leaders as being 'in danger' , I
wanted to present a more humanist message to the world, much like
the one you delivered so movingly at the Pickhurst school service.
Like other parents, I was touched by the fact that you did not 'hound'
the children but presented an idea that touches everyone regardless
of faith or background, that of love and forgiveness.
Please be as elaborate or brief with your response and bear in mind
that as a journalist, I often play devils advocate purposely and might
express views that are not necessarily mine.

1 If you were to deliver a Christmas message to all readers, of different
backgrounds and cultures what would it be?
The Christmas message if one of love, hope, joy and forgiveness. Love
for each other, regardless of birth or status; hope that holds us strong
for the future - if we do not have hope, we wither and die; joy simply
because we have so very much to be joyful about and we should
acknowledge that; forgiveness - without it we have none of the
others... we need to be able to forgive to know love, hope, and joy.
2 Christmas is celebrated by all, including atheists. Even Richard
Dawkins spoke of his love for this holiday and why he celebrates it.
Do you welcome people celebrating a non religious Christmas celebrating kindness/family and friends and not the birth of Jesus?
I suspect we already do! Of course we welcome people, those of
faith and those without, those seeking something more in their lives
and those wanting companionship. Churches are here for all people.
3 I attended a service for school children where parents were moved
by your wonderful delivery to the children but also by your message
of love and forgiveness. The profoundness and relevance of this is
unquestionable: all people would benefit from more love in their lives,
any person capable of forgiveness will be more at peace - my
question here is do you think that by not attending church and being
exposed to these messages, people are missing out on a way to
better their lives?
I feel there is a lack of care in our society today. Too many people
are so focused on their own lives that they cease to see what is
happening in the lives of others. Many, even in our churches, are
ignorant of the great need for the Food Banks that churches have set
up all over the land. People seem determined to lay the blame at
the door of the poor, without finding out the causes for poverty. It
has become the easy option to blame the 'lazy' or the 'benefit culture'
without finding out the facts. We all want to be loved and forgiven,
we all need to be loved and forgiven, yet we don't want to love and
forgive others around us - and we must. In churches we work at
reminding ourselves that love and forgiveness is something that takes
energy and work, and that we should be practising every day in an
attempt to get it right - I wonder where else in society (besides
churches) that message is found today? How do people challenge
their preconceptions, how do others find ways in which to live out the

love and forgiveness many in our society so desperately need? One
place to find it is in churches, there are ways to work out our need to
love others including volunteering - but where is the message of love
and forgiveness preached / taught? I'm not sure we are finding these
messages outside of the churches, and that worries me; how will our
children and teenagers learn about the possibility of love and hope
and joy in their lives if they are not taught about forgiveness? I
understand that church is not for everyone, so we must seek to find
alternative ways of getting that message across...

Nestlé
Nestlé is draining developing countries’ groundwater to make its Pure
Life bottled water, and then forcing its people to buy their own water
back. Now Nestlé is moving into Pakistan and sucking up the local
water supply, rendering entire areas uninhabitable in order to sell
mineral-enriched water to the upper class as a status symbol, while the
poor watch wells run dry and their children fall ill.
Tell Nestlé: Stop stealing the water, making villages uninhabitable.
Children are getting sick from the foul-smelling sludge they’re forced to
choke down. Meanwhile, Nestlé spends millions marketing “Pure Life” to
wealthy Americans, Europeans, and Pakistanis.
Dirty water kills more children around the world than AIDS, malaria, war,
and traffic accidents combined -- and Nestlé has a big hand in it.
At the World Water Forum in 2000, Nestlé led the way in fighting against
defining access to water a universal right.
Tell Nestlé: Water is a human right. Stop stealing it from communities.
When the company's Canadian subsidiary pushed to keep draining
millions of litres of fresh water from the water table in a time of drought,
we joined our friends at the Council of Canadians, Wellington Water
Watchers, and Ecojustice challenging Nestlé in court -- and we won!
If we expose Nestlé’s disgusting game plan, it will scale back its waterdraining facilities. If we ignore things, the problem will not go away. Join
us in standing up to corporations like Nestlé that suck up essential
natural resources. Nestlé’s current chairman and former CEO was
caught on tape arguing that water is "not a right”, and while the clip is
shocking, the reality is even worse.

The way things once were
This year’s theme covers sayings or poetry from the First World War
Happy Valentine's Day
My Angel last night I received a letter from you. I learned how strong
was the pain on the day we had to separate. Do you remember
those beautiful kisses? Do you remember the last one we gave each
other between the tears. You did not dare to say a word. The tears
were suffocating you. While passing by you were at the window.
The [train] guard also told me that I didn't see you. I almost thought
you didn't keep the promise made. I didn't dare to watch more than
once. My poor heart was suffocated not by tears, but by a strong
passion that I couldn't resist. You knew what my beliefs were. Also
having to leave you again, what a pain... By the end of the year we
hope this will end... Greetings and kisses Giuseppe. Enjoy this
souvenir from me. In these rough mountains you can find these
flowers.
This moving love letter was sent by Sergeant Major Giuseppe
Castellani, to his wife Antonia at home in Fossato di Vico, while he
was away serving in the Italian army during the First World War. All
her life Antonia cherished this edelweiss card, which was contributed
online to Europeana 1914-1918 by their grandson Manuel Castellani.
