Letter from the Minister
Dear Friends
I am writing this on the weekend we remembered
VJ day, when Japan surrendered, and World War Two was finally over.
The horror of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan should never leave
our consciousness; our memories of the devastation are what prevent a
repeat. We live in a dangerous world where too many unstable countries
have the capability to press the button; the wisdom of past experience
needs to remain clear and constant to remind us all of the dangers of
thinking we can rule the world.
We are all capable of thinking that we are in charge… that we rule.
Whether it is in our own home, in our jobs, in our relationships, we like
to think we are in charge.
As Christians we should know better – for we are never fully in charge of
our own lives.
God is.
It is when we acknowledge God as our true ruler that we can begin to live
a true and faithful life. And faith is at the heart of that. Faith calls us
to be true and steadfast in our lives, to make decisions based on prayer,
and to be steadfast in our relationships with other believers who
strengthen and support us.
While we are right to be concerned about the actions of others,
especially others with weapons, we have to remain constant in our faith –
God is in charge of our lives, and in Him we find our true selves.
We need to acknowledge that God Rules! Then we will know His peace in
our lives.
Shalom!

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL
The programme for this year has now been finalised and appears on
page 12 of Catalyst. There are a few changes – the main one being
that we will have a couple of nights off! But the hope is that these little
oases will re-energise us all to give our full support on the other
evenings, and of course to bring along lots of friends. I am particularly
keen to have good support for the new acts who will be appearing for
the first time this year. The River City Saxes and the Wind and Words
duo have very kindly agreed to come without payment, while the
Croydon Guitar Club (also unpaid) will be putting together a
programme especially for us – so please come along and show them
all how much this is appreciated. I have been to performances or
rehearsals by all of these performers, and I am sure they will give us a
very good time – and you can confidently recommend them to others.
By about mid-September or earlier I shall be starting to firm up the
arrangements for volunteers – and also for HFC performers on the
opening night – so please be ready! And thanks to everyone for help
to date.

Women’s Contact Coffee Morning
We will be holding the next coffee mornings
from 10.00am to 12.00 noon in the Small Hall
on the 12th of September.
We are continuing to raise monies to contribute to
disaster relief funds in different parts of the world.
We hope to see you at the Coffee Morning, and why not bring a friend?
Please note that the monies raised from the coffee mornings are
separate from those raised through the refreshments trolley after
Sunday morning services.

The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th
Sunday of each month.
The stall will be held on the 13th and 27th of September.
Don’t forget that we carry small snacking items which are perfect for
those Summer outings. We have some lovely small non-food items.
Perfect as gifts. They are worth a look at least.
Please continue to support your stall.
Thank you.
Richard and Barbara.
HAYES PHILHARMONIC CHOIR
This year the choir starts rehearsing a little later than usual, on
Wednesday 14th October, preparing for a Christmas concert on
Saturday 12th December. You could hardly have a more convenient
location, at least for Hayes residents, with rehearsals in the Village Hall
and the concert itself in the Parish Church. For singers, or for anyone
who would like to try singing, this is an attractive opportunity – a
shorter rehearsal programme; the opportunity to learn some unusual
carols; and then the chance to play a part in a friendly and
enjoyable occasion where there is a real sense of the local
community.
To find out more, have a word with me, ring me on 07989 192928, or
take to the internet (www.hayeschoir.co.uk) or twitter (@hayeschoir).

Alzheimer’s is a disease that causes dementia.
The article now goes on to discuss different types of dementia..
Vascular dementia is the second most common cause of dementia
after Alzheimer’s disease. Vascular dementia can occur when blood
flow to the brain becomes reduced. Some people have both
Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia – often called mixed dementia.
Vascular dementia can also be called vascular cognitive impairment.
Vascular dementia is sometimes split into more specific types. The
most common of these are:
• Stroke-related dementia. This includes multi-infarct dementia (MID),
which happens after a series of small strokes. It also includes
dementia which happens after a stroke (called post-stroke dementia).
• Subcortical vascular dementia (also called Binswanger’s disease,
small vessel disease-related dementia or lacunar state). This is caused
by changes to very small blood vessels in the brain.
Vascular dementia can have symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s. These
can include memory loss, disorientation and problems with
communication. There can also be more specific symptoms and
these may differ depending on the area of the brain that is affected.
These symptoms may include:
• Thinking skills: Becoming slower in thinking.
• Personality changes: These may include depression and apathy
(becoming disinterested in things). People may also become more
emotional.
• Movement problems: Difficulty walking or changes in the way a
person walks.
• Bladder problems: Frequent urge to urinate or other bladder
symptoms. This can be common in older age, but can be a feature of
vascular dementia when seen with other symptoms.
The symptoms of vascular dementia get worse over time. Vascular
dementia normally progresses over several years. However, the
speed of progression can vary during the disease and from person to
person. There may be a sudden, or stepwise, change after an event
such as a stroke.
Support: There are a range of support organisations that offer
practical and emotional support for people with dementia
and those helping to care for them.

GOINGS ON AT THE CHURCH
---------------
Time sure does fly. It only seems like yesterday when it started and was
over in 2014 and here we are in August 2015 and it also has been and
gone. Yes the Holiday from Home when we met up again with friends
and new faces to have a good time throughout the week with
varying activities starting off each day with a cuppa.
Quizzes and short talks featured from time to time and one afternoon
a comic drama. Each day we were treated to a midday lunch
fuelling our boilers for what was arranged for that afternoon.
Keeping fit sedately was undertaken accompanied by music ending
with some dancing. Not quite up to ‘Strictly come Dancing’, so who
cared, but thoroughly enjoyed. The alternative to the Keep Fit was
darts but as there were no takers I presume the fabric steward
worried about the state of the walls must have had a word. Music
also played its part during the week with a choir of lovely ladies,
seven in all, entertaining us and on another afternoon there was an
old time sing-a-long
The outing to Leeds Castle added to our numbers and on a bright
sunny not too hot a day we set off by minibus and car. On arrival
each one of us set off to do our own thing with the instruction to be
at the restaurant at a certain time if we wanted our cream tea. And
a good one it was too. Quite a few of in the party with walking
problems benefitted from the wheelchairs enabling us to see such a
lot there. A big thank you to the workhorses.
The castle provided much of interest like the gardens and the foot-
weary took advantage of the many seats to re-charge their batteries
before setting off to find something else of interest. There were 100s of
differing waterfowl waiting to be fed and a small ferry which crossed
one of the large lakes. The ‘stop me and buy one’ three wheeler ice
cream tricycle did a flourishing trade with the many picnickers there
sitting by the lakes
Back at the church one morning there was a flower arranging session,
popular from previous years, and it ended with all present making
their own arrangement to take home. Such different arrays there
were and again nice to see.
All who attended dare I dare to say were waited on hand and foot. So
much preparation had been put in by a great band of organisers
and helpers to make it such a happy week. A big word of THANKS to
all and as expressed by those on the receiving end we hope there
will be another HfH next year.

GETTING-TOGETHERS
----------
Smokey they were and most enjoyable. Yes the BBQs and as I say
good get-togethers as well as good food.
The first occasion where I was present was when the Men’s Group met
at Mounthurst one sunny/storm clouded evening and tucked in to
Cuisine a- la- Malcolm comprising burgers , sausages and much
more washed down with our own special brews. The rain kept off
and the sun long gone down before the last one locked the gates
and we set off home. Not however before we had planned the
programme for the next 12 months.
The second occasion was in the Manse garden hosted by Sue. There
members from Beckenham and Hayes churches and others met one
sunny rain-free afternoon. The BBQ was ably tended by Helen [Sue’s
sister] and we were waited upon by Megan and her friend Grace. In
addition to the varied BBQ fare our appetites were treated to a
lovely strawberry pavlova and many other deserts and drinks. Plenty
of nattering and laughter made for a very nice time. A big thank you
to Sue and all those who made it a good afternoon.

many sayings from New Zealand.

EATING IN THE UK IN THE FIFTIES
* "Kebab" was not even a word never mind a food.
* Hot dogs were a type of sausage that only the Americans ate.
* Cornflakes had arrived from America but it was obvious they would
never catch on.
* The phrase "boil in the bag" would have been beyond
comprehension.
* The idea of "oven chips" would not have made any sense at all
to us.

Website of the month: - Drive the promise
I am bringing this website which I found via Facebook.
The website was created by Australian youngsters.
This was posted on the website: -
I want you to think about your
parents for a moment.
Your birthday is their
celebration
Your happiness is their joy
Your future is their legacy
If they had to bury you, it
would
kill them
So please next time they
say ”be safe”
or “let me know you get
there ok”
don’t just brush it off,
because to them, you
are everything.
What is Drive The Promise ?
Drive the promise is a movement dedicated to changing the way we
as a society think about reckless driving and realising the real
consequence of our actions.
We are a society that slows down only when there is danger of a
speed camera or police in the area.
Most of us have at one time or another texted, called or taken a "selfie"
while driving. And some of us have chosen to drive under the
influence of drugs or alcohol. The risk assessment is less about will I
hurt someone" but more so "will I get caught"
Our excuse? "Everybody does it."
This movement is here to change that mindset, we want to show
Australian's young and old the real heartache caused by the
decisions "everybody" makes.
As drivers we need to look up, sober up, slow down and as passengers
we need to speak up.

Bible verses and passages worth pondering
an occasional series.
1) Hebrews 10:25 'Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in
the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another- and all the
more as you see the Day approaching.' (N.I.V.)
The writer of the letter to the Hebrews leaves us a timely and urgent
challenge in the middle of a section on the need to persevere in our
Christian life together. It seems that even in the heady and exciting
times of the young and growing church, some folk were losing their
enthusiasm or dropping off for a variety of reasons. Opposition or
persecution may have been very discouraging factors for many in
those days - nowadays of course, in our situation, they have largely
been replaced by a host of distracting opportunities for alternative
activities, all of which may be personally useful, enjoyable and helpful,
but inevitably lead to thin Sunday congregations!
The need for mutual encouragement is as evident as ever, particularly
as H.F.C. will soon be entering another minister-less period when
spiritual and practical cohesion is essential as we seek God's will for
our future direction. So when and how can we, as individual church
Good Heavens
A young couple on their way to get married were involved in a fatal
car accident. They found themselves sitting outside the Pearly
Gates waiting for St. Peter to process them into Heaven. As they
waited, they began to wonder if they could possibly get married in
Heaven. When St. Peter appeared, they asked him. "I don't know -
I've not been asked that before" he said, "let me go and find out".
The couple sat and waited.... and waited. After some weeks, they
started wondering what if their marriage began to flounder - would
they also be able to get a divorce in Heaven? They decided to ask
St. Peter when he returned.
More weeks passed before St. Peter got back - looking very
bedraggled. "Yes, you can be married here in Heaven" he said.
"Super", said the couple, "but during your absence, we were
wondering that if it didn't work out, could we get a divorce here as
well"?
A very red-faced, infuriated and angry St. Peter flung his clipboard to
the ground. "What's wrong?" asked the terrified pair.
"COME ON NOW!" bellowed St. Peter. "If it took me three months to
find a clergyman up here, have you any idea how long it will take to
find a lawyer?"

Someone Else
***
We are all saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our
church’s most valuable members, Someone Else. Someone’s passing
created a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for
many years, and for every one of those years, Someone did far more
than a normal person’s share of the work.
Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was
looked to for inspiration as well as results: “Someone Else can work
with that group.”
Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to
attend, one name was on everyone’s list - Someone Else. “Let
Someone Else do it” was a common refrain heard throughout the
church. It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among
the largest givers in the church. Whenever there was a financial need,
everyone just assumed Someone Else would make up the difference.
Someone Else was a wonderful person, sometimes appearing
superhuman; but a person can only do so much.
Were the truth known, everybody expected too much of Someone
Else. Now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to
do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is
going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did?
Remember - we can’t depend on Someone Else anymore!
members and friends, begin to step up our efforts to encourage each
other, and deepen and enrich our fellowship? Surely the autumn
season is a good time to begin, when most of us return refreshed from
holidays, and the regular midweek activities of our various groups
resume. Those who already attend these would be greatly
encouraged by others joining them.
A glance at Catalyst or the weekly notice sheets will remind you of the
rich diversity of groups seeking to provide friendship and fellowship for
all ages and inclinations. Opportunities to invite neighbours and
friends to join us for Sunday worship occur particularly at Harvest and
on Back to Church Sunday.
The enthusiasm and the initiative has to start with us of course, and
maybe some might do well to adopt a personal and private 'Back to
Church Every Sunday' resolution! Which takes us back to our opening
text- it is indeed a verse worth pondering and, wherever appropriate,
acting upon.

“Love is spelt T-I-M-E
"We don't always allow ourselves to spend time with those we love.
To care for others we need to be present to them. A lot of things in
life can get in the way. We get sidetracked and over-busy, but we
need to be available for others.
“The quality of our relationships is vital. We have to be willing to
waste time with people. lf we don't we can miss so much.
“Loving others means really listening to people, and that involves
time. Giving time is one aspect of giving yourself."
SHARING LOVE
If you have love to give and share,
Don’t hide your love away,
But let it shine like morning sun
To cheer a cloudy day.
If you have love within your heart,
A bright, eternal flame,
You have a gift for all the world,
A message to proclaim.
If you can feel compassion now
Towards your fellow man,
Send out your caring, loving thoughts
As often as you can.
If you have God to walk with you
Just listen for His voice,
He gives His love for you to share,
Go forward and rejoice.

  • 3. 1 Letter from the Minister Dear Friends I am writing this on the weekend we remembered VJ day, when Japan surrendered, and World War Two was finally over. The horror of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan should never leave our consciousness; our memories of the devastation are what prevent a repeat. We live in a dangerous world where too many unstable countries have the capability to press the button; the wisdom of past experience needs to remain clear and constant to remind us all of the dangers of thinking we can rule the world. We are all capable of thinking that we are in charge… that we rule. Whether it is in our own home, in our jobs, in our relationships, we like to think we are in charge. As Christians we should know better – for we are never fully in charge of our own lives. God is. It is when we acknowledge God as our true ruler that we can begin to live a true and faithful life. And faith is at the heart of that. Faith calls us to be true and steadfast in our lives, to make decisions based on prayer, and to be steadfast in our relationships with other believers who strengthen and support us. While we are right to be concerned about the actions of others, especially others with weapons, we have to remain constant in our faith – God is in charge of our lives, and in Him we find our true selves. We need to acknowledge that God Rules! Then we will know His peace in our lives. Shalom!

Items contributed after 23rd MUST be typed and/or emailed. Nothing handwritten please, otherwise it will NOT be included in November’s edition. Catalyst will be out by Sunday 1st Nov. Regards. Editor Continued on page 15.......... CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL The programme for this year has now been finalised and appears on page 12 of Catalyst. There are a few changes – the main one being that we will have a couple of nights off! But the hope is that these little oases will re-energise us all to give our full support on the other evenings, and of course to bring along lots of friends. I am particularly keen to have good support for the new acts who will be appearing for the first time this year. The River City Saxes and the Wind and Words duo have very kindly agreed to come without payment, while the Croydon Guitar Club (also unpaid) will be putting together a programme especially for us – so please come along and show them all how much this is appreciated. I have been to performances or rehearsals by all of these performers, and I am sure they will give us a very good time – and you can confidently recommend them to others. By about mid-September or earlier I shall be starting to firm up the arrangements for volunteers – and also for HFC performers on the opening night – so please be ready! And thanks to everyone for help to date. Christine

  • 10. 8 Women’s Contact Coffee Morning We will be holding the next coffee mornings from 10.00am to 12.00 noon in the Small Hall on the 12th of September. We are continuing to raise monies to contribute to disaster relief funds in different parts of the world. We hope to see you at the Coffee Morning, and why not bring a friend? Please note that the monies raised from the coffee mornings are separate from those raised through the refreshments trolley after Sunday morning services. Barbara Jones The Fairtrade Sunday Stall We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. The stall will be held on the 13th and 27th of September. Don’t forget that we carry small snacking items which are perfect for those Summer outings. We have some lovely small non-food items. Perfect as gifts. They are worth a look at least. Please continue to support your stall. Thank you. Richard and Barbara. HAYES PHILHARMONIC CHOIR This year the choir starts rehearsing a little later than usual, on Wednesday 14th October, preparing for a Christmas concert on Saturday 12th December. You could hardly have a more convenient location, at least for Hayes residents, with rehearsals in the Village Hall and the concert itself in the Parish Church. For singers, or for anyone who would like to try singing, this is an attractive opportunity – a shorter rehearsal programme; the opportunity to learn some unusual carols; and then the chance to play a part in a friendly and enjoyable occasion where there is a real sense of the local community. To find out more, have a word with me, ring me on 07989 192928, or take to the internet (www.hayeschoir.co.uk) or twitter (@hayeschoir). Christine

  • 12. 10 NOTICE Thanks to my Friends at H.F.C. for their kind thoughts, prayers, cards, telephone calls and visits during my short stay in the PRUH in June 2015 where I had an operation for a recurring cancer problem. Following my discharge I was blessed with help from my daughters & my granddaughter Nadine and visits by H.F.C. and other friends. For your concern and encouragement when I was able to join with you for morning services (balancing on two sticks!) - I thank you. To reiterate what Thelma wrote some time ago - "We are so blessed to have such a caring Church community." I couldn't agree more. Jim

  • 15. 13 Alzheimer’s is a disease that causes dementia. The article now goes on to discuss different types of dementia.. Vascular dementia is the second most common cause of dementia after Alzheimer’s disease. Vascular dementia can occur when blood flow to the brain becomes reduced. Some people have both Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia – often called mixed dementia. Vascular dementia can also be called vascular cognitive impairment. Vascular dementia is sometimes split into more specific types. The most common of these are: • Stroke-related dementia. This includes multi-infarct dementia (MID), which happens after a series of small strokes. It also includes dementia which happens after a stroke (called post-stroke dementia). • Subcortical vascular dementia (also called Binswanger’s disease, small vessel disease-related dementia or lacunar state). This is caused by changes to very small blood vessels in the brain. Vascular dementia can have symptoms similar to Alzheimer’s. These can include memory loss, disorientation and problems with communication. There can also be more specific symptoms and these may differ depending on the area of the brain that is affected. These symptoms may include: • Thinking skills: Becoming slower in thinking. • Personality changes: These may include depression and apathy (becoming disinterested in things). People may also become more emotional. • Movement problems: Difficulty walking or changes in the way a person walks. • Bladder problems: Frequent urge to urinate or other bladder symptoms. This can be common in older age, but can be a feature of vascular dementia when seen with other symptoms. The symptoms of vascular dementia get worse over time. Vascular dementia normally progresses over several years. However, the speed of progression can vary during the disease and from person to person. There may be a sudden, or stepwise, change after an event such as a stroke. Support: There are a range of support organisations that offer practical and emotional support for people with dementia and those helping to care for them. Continued in October
  • 16. 14 GOINGS ON AT THE CHURCH --------------- Time sure does fly. It only seems like yesterday when it started and was over in 2014 and here we are in August 2015 and it also has been and gone. Yes the Holiday from Home when we met up again with friends and new faces to have a good time throughout the week with varying activities starting off each day with a cuppa. Quizzes and short talks featured from time to time and one afternoon a comic drama. Each day we were treated to a midday lunch fuelling our boilers for what was arranged for that afternoon. Keeping fit sedately was undertaken accompanied by music ending with some dancing. Not quite up to ‘Strictly come Dancing’, so who cared, but thoroughly enjoyed. The alternative to the Keep Fit was darts but as there were no takers I presume the fabric steward worried about the state of the walls must have had a word. Music also played its part during the week with a choir of lovely ladies, seven in all, entertaining us and on another afternoon there was an old time sing-a-long The outing to Leeds Castle added to our numbers and on a bright sunny not too hot a day we set off by minibus and car. On arrival each one of us set off to do our own thing with the instruction to be at the restaurant at a certain time if we wanted our cream tea. And a good one it was too. Quite a few of in the party with walking problems benefitted from the wheelchairs enabling us to see such a lot there. A big thank you to the workhorses. The castle provided much of interest like the gardens and the foot- weary took advantage of the many seats to re-charge their batteries before setting off to find something else of interest. There were 100s of differing waterfowl waiting to be fed and a small ferry which crossed one of the large lakes. The ‘stop me and buy one’ three wheeler ice cream tricycle did a flourishing trade with the many picnickers there sitting by the lakes Back at the church one morning there was a flower arranging session, popular from previous years, and it ended with all present making their own arrangement to take home. Such different arrays there were and again nice to see. All who attended dare I dare to say were waited on hand and foot. So much preparation had been put in by a great band of organisers and helpers to make it such a happy week. A big word of THANKS to all and as expressed by those on the receiving end we hope there will be another HfH next year. Mike Duke
  • 17. 15 GETTING-TOGETHERS ---------- Smokey they were and most enjoyable. Yes the BBQs and as I say good get-togethers as well as good food. The first occasion where I was present was when the Men’s Group met at Mounthurst one sunny/storm clouded evening and tucked in to Cuisine a- la- Malcolm comprising burgers , sausages and much more washed down with our own special brews. The rain kept off and the sun long gone down before the last one locked the gates and we set off home. Not however before we had planned the programme for the next 12 months. The second occasion was in the Manse garden hosted by Sue. There members from Beckenham and Hayes churches and others met one sunny rain-free afternoon. The BBQ was ably tended by Helen [Sue’s sister] and we were waited upon by Megan and her friend Grace. In addition to the varied BBQ fare our appetites were treated to a lovely strawberry pavlova and many other deserts and drinks. Plenty of nattering and laughter made for a very nice time. A big thank you to Sue and all those who made it a good afternoon. Mike The way things once were Taken from a long email from a contact in Australia. The sender explains that the statistics may only refer to UK, although there are many sayings from New Zealand. Editor EATING IN THE UK IN THE FIFTIES * "Kebab" was not even a word never mind a food. * Hot dogs were a type of sausage that only the Americans ate. * Cornflakes had arrived from America but it was obvious they would never catch on. * The phrase "boil in the bag" would have been beyond comprehension. * The idea of "oven chips" would not have made any sense at all to us.
  • 18. 16 Website of the month: - Drive the promise I am bringing this website which I found via Facebook. The website was created by Australian youngsters. This was posted on the website: - I want you to think about your parents for a moment. Your birthday is their celebration Your happiness is their joy Your future is their legacy If they had to bury you, it would kill them So please next time they say ”be safe” or “let me know you get there ok” don’t just brush it off, because to them, you are everything. What is Drive The Promise ? Drive the promise is a movement dedicated to changing the way we as a society think about reckless driving and realising the real consequence of our actions. We are a society that slows down only when there is danger of a speed camera or police in the area. Most of us have at one time or another texted, called or taken a "selfie" while driving. And some of us have chosen to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The risk assessment is less about will I hurt someone" but more so "will I get caught" Our excuse? "Everybody does it." This movement is here to change that mindset, we want to show Australian's young and old the real heartache caused by the decisions "everybody" makes. As drivers we need to look up, sober up, slow down and as passengers we need to speak up.
  • 19. 17 Bible verses and passages worth pondering an occasional series. 1) Hebrews 10:25 'Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another- and all the more as you see the Day approaching.' (N.I.V.) The writer of the letter to the Hebrews leaves us a timely and urgent challenge in the middle of a section on the need to persevere in our Christian life together. It seems that even in the heady and exciting times of the young and growing church, some folk were losing their enthusiasm or dropping off for a variety of reasons. Opposition or persecution may have been very discouraging factors for many in those days - nowadays of course, in our situation, they have largely been replaced by a host of distracting opportunities for alternative activities, all of which may be personally useful, enjoyable and helpful, but inevitably lead to thin Sunday congregations! The need for mutual encouragement is as evident as ever, particularly as H.F.C. will soon be entering another minister-less period when spiritual and practical cohesion is essential as we seek God's will for our future direction. So when and how can we, as individual church Good Heavens A young couple on their way to get married were involved in a fatal car accident. They found themselves sitting outside the Pearly Gates waiting for St. Peter to process them into Heaven. As they waited, they began to wonder if they could possibly get married in Heaven. When St. Peter appeared, they asked him. "I don't know - I've not been asked that before" he said, "let me go and find out". The couple sat and waited.... and waited. After some weeks, they started wondering what if their marriage began to flounder - would they also be able to get a divorce in Heaven? They decided to ask St. Peter when he returned. More weeks passed before St. Peter got back - looking very bedraggled. "Yes, you can be married here in Heaven" he said. "Super", said the couple, "but during your absence, we were wondering that if it didn't work out, could we get a divorce here as well"? A very red-faced, infuriated and angry St. Peter flung his clipboard to the ground. "What's wrong?" asked the terrified pair. "COME ON NOW!" bellowed St. Peter. "If it took me three months to find a clergyman up here, have you any idea how long it will take to find a lawyer?" Continued on page 20 .....

  • 22. 20 Someone Else *** We are all saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our church’s most valuable members, Someone Else. Someone’s passing created a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years, and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than a normal person’s share of the work. Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results: “Someone Else can work with that group.” Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone’s list - Someone Else. “Let Someone Else do it” was a common refrain heard throughout the church. It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the largest givers in the church. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed Someone Else would make up the difference. Someone Else was a wonderful person, sometimes appearing superhuman; but a person can only do so much. Were the truth known, everybody expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did? Remember - we can’t depend on Someone Else anymore! members and friends, begin to step up our efforts to encourage each other, and deepen and enrich our fellowship? Surely the autumn season is a good time to begin, when most of us return refreshed from holidays, and the regular midweek activities of our various groups resume. Those who already attend these would be greatly encouraged by others joining them. A glance at Catalyst or the weekly notice sheets will remind you of the rich diversity of groups seeking to provide friendship and fellowship for all ages and inclinations. Opportunities to invite neighbours and friends to join us for Sunday worship occur particularly at Harvest and on Back to Church Sunday. The enthusiasm and the initiative has to start with us of course, and maybe some might do well to adopt a personal and private 'Back to Church Every Sunday' resolution! Which takes us back to our opening text- it is indeed a verse worth pondering and, wherever appropriate, acting upon. Martin Nunn .... Continued from page 17

  • 24. “Love is spelt T-I-M-E "We don't always allow ourselves to spend time with those we love. To care for others we need to be present to them. A lot of things in life can get in the way. We get sidetracked and over-busy, but we need to be available for others. “The quality of our relationships is vital. We have to be willing to waste time with people. lf we don't we can miss so much. “Loving others means really listening to people, and that involves time. Giving time is one aspect of giving yourself." SHARING LOVE If you have love to give and share, Don’t hide your love away, But let it shine like morning sun To cheer a cloudy day. If you have love within your heart, A bright, eternal flame, You have a gift for all the world, A message to proclaim. If you can feel compassion now Towards your fellow man, Send out your caring, loving thoughts As often as you can.
