Streatham Gourmet
visits Streatham Wine House
Rehema Figueiredo
Nestled close to Streatham
Gourmet favourite, Hood,
Streatham Wine House is the
perfect place to while away an
evening in the cause of “wine
education”. The setting is cosy
and inviting, with the walls
adorned with a large painting of
founders, married couple Beth
and Jimmy and their friend Matt,
with photos of the trio on wine-
inspired adventures around the
world. The place really gives you
the feeling of being invited over
to your mate’s house; a mate
who has an exceptional cellar
and knows a lot about wine.
The extensive wine list might
be intimidating but helpful Matt
guided through the options and
put us at ease. We began with a
delicious English sparkling wine
from the South Downs. Matt
explained the Wiston Estate,
Cuvée Brut (£47 for a bottle)
came from a vineyard owned by
an Englishman and his South
African wife who pestered her
husband for years to grow some
grapes to remind her of her
homeland.
Streatham Wine House isn’t
just about wine – the food
is pure indulgence, Molten
Vacherin Mont d’Or baked with
white wine with sourdough for
dunking (£22), a charcuterie
board of spiced Coppa with real
kick, hot smoked pork belly and
Yorkshire bresaola (£6 with the
baked cheese or 3 for £10), for
example.
We visited during a South African
special event, and our food
was accompanied by a flight of
three white wines from there
– citrusy Ataraxia Chardonnay,
fruity Momento Chenin Blanc
and BLANKbottle, perhaps the
most anti-wine snob drink on
the market - its makers refuse
to define which variety of grape
they used to encourage focus on
the flavour.
Ordering a flight is a brilliant
way of tasting wines before
committing to a bottle and
each glass comes with a card
explaining its balance of flavours

Streatham’s Trains – Commuters
Vote with their Feet!
Neil Salt, Chair, Streatham Action Transport
Streatham Action Transport (SAT)
thanks those 485 Streatham
commuters who responded to
our recent rail users’ survey,
following on from 3 timetable
changes implemented by the train
operators over the summer. Far
from bringing relief to our long-
suffering commuters, the changes
in May only made things worse:
• 36% of respondents actually
changed their journeys to work
as a result of the May timetable
changes!
• 1 in 5 of all respondents
now choose to take a bus
to the nearest tube station
rather than suffer in silence
on Streatham’s overground
services.
SAT have also recently secured
statistics from Network Rail
through a Freedom of Information
request on issues surrounding
cancelled and late trains at the
3 Streatham stations over the
past 12 months. These stats have
revealed:
• 32% of all trains were
cancelled in June and July,
following on from May’s first
timetable change.
• During the 2017-18 Christmas
and New Year period 32% of all
trains were also cancelled.
No wonder that Streatham’s
commuters have voted with their
feet, perceiving the problems with
overcrowded tubes being better
than being late for work.
SAT is preparing a report to send
to the Department for Transport
and the train operators on the
back of these findings. We shall
keep you posted further with the
responses that we receive. In the
meantime, let’s hope that recent
signs of a slight improvement in
service continue.

The “Dames” of
Streatham Hill
Theatre
The magnificent Streatham Hill Theatre opened on
20th November 1929 with the slogan, “West End
shows at Provincial prices”, and had a capacity of
2,523, more than the Coliseum, Covent Garden
and Drury Lane. The Streatham Hill Theatre and the
affiliated Golders Green Hippodrome became main
theatre venues in London.
During 30 years, the theatre staged 1,300 shows
including plays, musicals, opera, ballet, variety and
pantomime with some of the greatest performers of
the day including an impressive list of Dames - as
well as pantomime dames.
Dame Edith Evans
(1888-1976)
was a member
of the Streatham
Shakespeare Players.
She played Viola in
1910 in Twelfth Night
and in 1912, Beatrice
in Much Ado about
Nothing. William Poel
discovered her playing
the role of Viola at the
Streatham Town Hall
and launched her career. She appeared in Oscar
Wilde’s, The Importance of Ernest at the Streatham
Hill Theatre in October 1939, playing Lady Bracknell
and is best known for the interchange with Jack
when she exclaims “a Handbag?”. The star-studded
cast included Sir John Gielgud, Jack Hawkins and
two other Dames, Margaret Rutherford and Peggy
Ashcroft.
Dame Margaret
Rutherford (1882-
1972) was born within
the Historic Parish of
Streatham in Dornton
Road Balham. A
talented pianist as
well as a fine actress,
she shot to fame in
the film adaptation of
Noel Coward’s Blithe Spirit. She will be remembered
to many as Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple. She
appeared at the Streatham Hill Theatre in 1939
in Spring Meeting as Bijou Furze, Little Ladyship,
Goodness How Sad and While Parents Sleep
Dame Peggy Ashcroft
(1907- 1991) began
her career in 1930
in Jew Suss at the
Streatham Hill Theatre
with the part of Naomi
who kills herself rather
than surrender to her
father’s ducal patron.
She won the Best
Supporting Actress
Oscar for a Passage to
India (1984)
Dame Anna Neagle
(1904-1986) starred in
the West End musical,
Stand Up and Sing
with Jack Buchanan
in 1931, and in May
1932 the show was
performed at the
Streatham Hill Theatre.

streatham look forward to no less than four home
games in December as Jeremy Cornish and his team
look to continue their good form this season. the
redhawks are third in the National League south
1 and have had some thrilling victories recently,
typified by a penalty shot win over rivals London
raiders after trailing by three goals earlier in the
game.
Goalie Damien King has earned plaudits in goal
and up front, and former Great Britain forward Leigh
Jamieson has found his scoring touch and leads
the team on points. Coach Jeremy Cornish has
suggested he may shuffle his squad in the coming
weeks and redhawks fans are certainly enjoying
their visits to the streatham arena.
“We put on some great displays recently and it
makes such a big difference when the stands are
full” said Cornish.
“the players are doing their part, digging in when
they go behind and battling for wins that look likely
to be losses. We really need the fans to respond
and back us in their numbers, especially as we get
towards Christmas and people are understandably
very busy on a weekend.
“the team will do their best to make sure that the
break from shopping is rewarded with exciting
displays on the ice”

Local folk musicians join
forces in new Folk Night
Friday 7th december sees a
brand-new folk night launch at
hideaway, with three local rising
stars. solo artists Bity Booker and
sherika sherard join alt-folk band
Farrago for a festive night of music,
mulled wine and mince pies – as
well as a full menu and bar.
Ian Bennett, lead singer and
songwriter of Farrago, volunteers
with the streatham Festival
Committee, and curated this
year’s amazing streatham strut
– the Festival’s annual free live
gig trail in which he and sherika
also performed. Ian believes that
streatham is truly on the up as
a music destination: “there’s a
real thirst for high-quality, original
music in streatham. the fact that
every single venue on the strut was
packed to the rafters demonstrates
that! streatham has great venues
for live music and an incredible
amount of artistic talent. the
community has a lot to gain from
continuing to promote that.”
“Farrago were ecstatic to play at
the space Project as part of the
streatham Festival 2018 and feel
privileged to be invited to play at
one of streatham’s premier music
venues. We can’t wait!” said Ian.
Neither can we – see you there!

home Grown heroes
matt Garland is a true romantic,
and that makes him a hero to us.
he contacted heart streatham
to surprise his fiancée, Gemma
hughes, with a mention of
their Cotswold wedding on 9th
November in heart streatham.
matt and Gemma live near
streatham station.
“We’ve been together for just over
7 years, and we met in London
through mutual friends. We’ve
enjoyed living in streatham since
aug 2014, and we were fortunate
enough to buy our first home
together here. since then, we have
made some lasting friendships
in the area, enjoy supporting
local business, and enjoy eating/
drinking out in our usual haunts.
We have also encouraged some
of our friends to also live in the
area as well”, said matt, “they also
share our love for streatham and
everything it has to offer.”
We love people who love
streatham as much as we do!
here’s a beautiful photograph
of mr. and mrs, Garland on
their wedding day – many
congratulations to you both and
have a wonderful honeymoon in
st Lucia!
