3. INTRO
• The song I have selected to use is Aviciis “Hey Brother”
• The reason I have selected this song is because the lyrics in the song tell a story which
will be very easy to portray in a music video. The lyrics tell a story about not giving up on
family and how family will always be there for you. Using this song in a music video opens
loads of different narratives you could do as you could portray the song in many different
ways.
• I also chose this song because it was hugely popular reaching number 2 on the UK
singles chart and number 16 in the US single charts. It also reached number 1 in both the
US and UK dance music charts. Making it a very popular well known song.

4. STYLE ON GENRE
• The style of music video I have gone with is narrative this is because the lyrics tell a story
and the best way to portray what the lyrics mean is to use a narrative.
• The genre of this song is a mixture of both House music and American Bluegrass, I think
this is a good mixture as it is un common to see these types of music genres together
making the song catchy and popular.

5. MY IDEA
My idea for the music video for this song is to focus on what the song is about. The main focal
point of the song is that family will always be there for you no matter what, and with my idea I
will make it a focal point.
The main idea and point of my song is that a Brother loses his brother to a accident and
despite trying his best to save him the brother still passes away. The older brother then spirals
out of control and turns to alcohol as a solution to get over his brothers death. This is when
the friend comes in and starts helping him get over his addiction, which in turn fails as he
turns back to alcohol. But the friends still sticks around and helps him until the brother finally
gets over the addiction and the death of his brother.
I feel this story captures the meaning of the song as it shows that family will always will be
there for you as even when the brother goes back to alcohol showing that family will never
give up.

8. REPRESENTATION - LOCATION
The locations I will be using are as follows…. The 1st location I will be using is the older
brothers house. This is the location that will be used the most throughout the
video. This location is my own home but will be representing the
home of the older brother in the music video. The reason I have
picked to use this as the location of the brother’s home is
because it is my own home giving me the freedom to set up the
scenes the way I want making it easier to represent how the
brother lives. I will be able to do things such as make it look
messy giving off the feeling that the brother has lost control and
doesn’t care anymore. Inside the house only two rooms will be
used one being the living room and the other being the bedroom.
I will be using the living room because this is where he sits
grieving over the loss of his brother by sitting there with a bottle of
alcohol watching clips of when they were younger.

9. LOCATION
Bedroom
The second room of the house, the bedroom will be used to show how out of control the
brother is, this is because the bedroom will look unclean and bottles will be everywhere
representing how he doesn’t care anymore. This is a good location to choose because it is a
normal home with typical things you would find in a home such as sofas, TV and pictures
making it easier for the viewer to relate to.

10. LOCATION
Kitchen
The 3rd location I will be using in the brothers house will be the kitchen. The only part of the
kitchen I will be using will be the fridge to show how the brother manages to control his addiction.

11. LOCATION (OUTSIDE)
This location will only be used for a couple of shots throughout the music video. This location will
be used in the part of the music video when the brother is finally turning his life around and
staring to get back on track. In this scene we will see the brother and his friend smashing a
bottle of alcohol which represents the brother breaking his addiction. This location will be good
for doing this scene because it can be done anywhere outside and doesn’t have to be set to a
specific area making it even easier to film, but I plan on using the homes back garden. I will also
be using this location because it will be safer to do this scene as it will involve smashing a glass
bottle and doing it side would be considered dangerous for both the camera man and actors.
The other reason I have selected this to be a place to use is for the scene on where the older
brother smashes a glass bottle to signify that he has quit his addiction. This will be an ideal
place to do this as it will be my own property and it will be easy to manage as I would be able to
implement safety procedures to ensure the safety of everyone on set.

12. LOCATION (GRAVEYARD) M
The last location used will be a graveyard, which is located along Siddal New Road and called
Stoney Royd Cemetery and will be used in the last couple of shots of the music video. This
location will be used when the brother is finally over all of his problems and is starting to his life
back on track. This will be a good location to use to represent the brother sorting himself out
as he will finally be laying to rest his brother and the problems that came with him. It will also
be easy for the viewers to relate to this location as they know why people go to graveyards
and what people feel like going to graveyards.

13. COSTUME – OLDER BROTHER
The first costume I will be using is basic scruffy clothes that will consist of tracksuit bottoms
and a baggy top. This will go together with how the brother is feeling as this costume will be
worn throughout the scenes where the brother is struggling with life and his addiction. The
costume will fit in with how the brother is feeling because it is stereotypical that people who
are drunks dress scruffy and don’t care how they look. He will not be wearing any shoes as
it will show that he doesn't leave the house at all as he has shut out the outside world, these
clothes will look dirty which shows he doesn't care. Alongside this costume the actor will
have scruffy un-groomed hair also with a beard that isn’t looked after this will add to the
effect of this character not caring and represent the fact that he has given up on life.

14. COSTUME – OLDER BROTHER
The second costume I will be using will be the brother’s suit. This will be used at the
end of the music video after the brother has fully recovered and is over the death of
his brother and addiction. The suit will help represent how the brother has recovered
because throughout the music video he has been looking scruffy and effortless so
when the brother is seen dressed formally it shows how the brother has recovered
and has got his life back on track. Alongside this costume the hair of the character will
be styled and look smart, his beard will also be trimmed down and look presentable
this will show the transition in his life as he will go from looking scruffy and careless to
looking smart and presentable. It will also represent that he is over is addiction and
has his life back on track.

15. COSTUME – THE FRIEND
In this costume the character will just be wearing simple jeans and T-shirt there
will be nothing specific about this costume as he is only there to help his friend
and nothing can be taken from the clothes he will be wearing. Alongside this
costume the actor’s hair will be well kept as he will be playing an average guy
who is living a normal life. This will add to the effect of him being “normal” and
looking out for his friend. It will also help add to his kind features and help him pull
off playing this character.

16. PROPS
The first prop used in the music video will be a photo of the two brothers. This will be used in
the first shot of the music video to establish what the video is going to be about. It will also be
used throughout the video to show how the brother is broken through the loss and how he
uses his brother as motivation. The image used will look old and slightly blurry to show that it
is old.

17. PROPS
The second prop used will be different types of bottled alcohol. These will be used throughout
the music video to show how broken the brother is, it will also show how is brother is lost
control and how he is using alcohol to take his mind of his brother.

18. PROPS
The third prop used will be two different newspapers with different headlines. One being
“Huge accident leaving people in hospital” this will be telling the audience what happened to
the younger brother. The second headline will be “Brother donates organ in effort to save
brother” this will tell the audience why the brother went off the rails as we know his brother
past away but he tried his best to help him survive.

19. PROPS
The fourth prop used will be a fridge, this will be used in two key shots, one showing it full of
alcohol and the other showing it empty and full of normal things. The reason the fridge is used
is to show how bad he addiction is as it will be the only thing in the fridge. The second shot of
the fridge will be when the fridge is clean and is alcohol free, this will show and confirm that
the brother is over his addiction and is starting to get his life back on track.

20. PROPS
The fifth prop will be used after the “1 year later” shot. The card is used to show the viewer’s
why he went back to alcohol after just overcoming it. The card will have a 1 year anniversary
on it telling the viewers it has been one year since the death of his brother, making the older
brother go off the rail again.

The last prop used is not used for significant reason but is used to show the brother paying
respects at his brother’s grave.
This will be used in the scenes where the brother is watching the home footage of him and his
younger brother from when they were little.

22. ACTORS – OLDER BROTHER
• Character one also known as the “Brother” will be played by Brandon Oxley. The character the Brother will
be a depressed sad looking character. He will have to look sad as in the story he has just lost his brother.
The character will also look sluggish and lazy as the character has given up on life and doesn’t care about
anyone or anything anymore. The character is also an alcoholic meaning the actor playing him will have to
be able to portray and look like someone that could be an alcoholic.
• The reason I think Brandon will suit this role is because he can have a serious look on his face, creating the
effect that the character is actually depressed. He also the facial features of an older character which will
help go towards the fact that the character is an alcoholic. With the actor having facial hair and the ability to
grow it out, they will be able to have a beard that will look unclean and un-kept adding to the affect that he
has given up on life and the world, this added with the fact that he will be able to style his hair in a way
which will be able to represent that the character really doesn't care and has truly given up on life. These
feature added with makeup will be able to portray the character is such a way that people will easily
understand he is in a bad state.
• They will bring to the role experience as in my last year’s project Brandon featured as one of the main
characters as he portrayed a young man exploring a abandoned factory with his friend. He was able to
demonstrate the ability to take the role and portray it in the way I wanted it to be portrayed. The fact that he
has experience acting will also go in hand with the fact that he is a Drama Student in college giving him the
ability to portray the actor in a professional manor.

23. ACTORS – THE FRIEND
• Character two also known as the “Friend” will be played by Brandon Cawley. The character the Friend will
be is the type of character that is caring and wants what is best for his friends, we will see this throughout
the music video as he will be trying his best to help the brother get out of the mess he is in by kicking his
addiction and helping him get used to the fact that the brother has lost his younger brother. This type of
character will kind of be the opposite of the brother as he will always be looking happy. He will also be the
character that has a lot of sympathy for the brother.
• The reason I think Brandon will suit this role is because he is a smiley type of character himself making it
easy for him to portray the friend in a friendly manor. He is also a young looking character which will go
against what the other character looks like, making the brother look even worse and it will make the friend
look healthy. With this character looking healthy it will create an illusion that he is setting an example for the
brother and what the brother is trying to achieve by becoming healthy and kicking his addiction. Brandon
also has gentle feature which will help add the effect of him being a caring character and looking out and
wanting best for his friends.
• The experience Brandon will bring to the role is that at GCSE Brandon studied Drama and Acting and
passing with an A*. This will help him get into character as he will know what will be expected of him when
acting on set. He will also have experience in acting making it easier for him to portray the character in the
way I see fit.

24. MY RESEARCH
• The research helped me in finding out key information about my target audience and also
key factors about the codes and conventions of my genre.
• The first bit of research I did was look into 3 similar product of that to the song I had
chosen. To do this I looked at the music videos Summer by Calvin Harris, Foggy Back
Mountain by Earl and Gods Gonna Cut You Down by Johnny Cash. This helped me
understand things such as Mise en scene and the codes and conventions of my genre
and how I could implement them into my music video to make it a success.

25. RESEARCH
• I next looked into age regulations and how they are used with music videos. I found out
that age ratings are a real thing with music videos and are taken quite seriously. I looked
into how you achieve each age rating and then selected which age rating I would be going
with.
• After looking into it I found out that the age rating of my music video would be a PG
meaning it should be suitable for everyone but for the young audience’s parents should be
advised.
• This is because although my music video doesn’t contain any sexual content it does
promote the heavy use of alcohol which can influence the young minded which is why I
went for the PG rating.

26. RESEARCH
The last bit of research that I did was the analysis on my questionnaire which helped me
figure out who my audience will be. I used both primary, secondary research to identify my
audience.
I used the primary research (being the questionnaire) to identify what certain people looked
for when watching and consuming music. This helped identify what people liked in the age
rating I was going for.
I then used secondary research (information found on the web) to help back up and analyse
the primary research, this helped me figure out that my audience will be both male and female
as isn't really a dominant sex that prefer EDM music. It also identified that narrative was the
preferred video type telling me the decision I had gone for was the correct one.
