An establishment of higher learning, l’Ecole Suisse Internationale is pleased to announce the
second edition of its Interuniversity Summer School in Humanities and Social Sciences. The program
has been established in collaboration with research teachers from the Ecole Normale Supérieure,
the University Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle, the University of Montpellier, and from the University of
Cergy-Pontoise. The program has also been made possible thanks to the kind support of
L'Intermède (www.lintermede.com) and IAWIS/AIERTI (iawis.org).
Included in the program from 15 to 30 July 2017, located in Paris at 10 Rue des Messageries:
 French Courses (Consolidation/deepening of comprehension skills and in written/oral
production for academic and professional situations)
 Thematic Workshops (divided into six working sessions)
 Cultural Excursions (walks, visits, cinemas, and tastings)
 Round Tables (in the company of intellectuals and renowned European writers and artists)
The objective of this program is to offer students of the public and young researchers the occasion
to improve their mastery of the french language, to explore new interdisciplinary fields in social
sciences, to otherwise discover french socio-cultural reality and its heritage, and to exchange with
french academics and/or other foreigners residing in France. And especially since the courses and
workshops themselves will be reserved only to the participants, the cultural activities and the round
tables will be open to a wider audience.
Admission Criteria
Have sufficient mastery in oral and written french, be of at least 18 years of age (and if applicable,
be enrolled in a Bachelor's Degree, a Master's Degree [BA / MA] or a thesis in a foreign university)
Composition of the applicant’s file
Admission to our summer school is subject to evaluation of each candidate's file and application.
The jury (composed of academics and young researchers) will base its decision on the detailed
analysis of the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (in French or English)
- Cover letter (in French)
- Short biographical note (in French - 200 words maximum)
- Photocopy of last obtained diploma

Candidate files must be received between 1 January and 12 March 2017.
Pricing : 1,950 euros
Participation in the summer school includes language classes in the mornings, thematic workshops
in the afternoons, cultural excursions and all other activities organised during the stay. It also
includes accomodations (from 15 to 30 July, 2017), with your choice of either a studio (subject to
availability) or with a host family (bed and breakfast).

All participants may apply for scholarship aid to cover part of the fees associated with their stay.

Thematic Workshop n° 1 Extraterrestrials, robots, and superheroes:
Journey to the heart of French pop culture
Saviez-vous que des auteurs français écrivaient de la science-fiction bien avant que le terme ne soit inventé aux Etats-
Unis ? Qu'il existait des super-héros dans la littérature française du début du XXe siècle ? Connaissez-vous l'influence qu'a
exercée sur le cinéma et la bande dessinée le dessinateur Moebius, alias Jean Giraud ? Ce séminaire se veut une
exploration libre de la culture pop française et de ses interactions avec l’univers anglo-saxon, l'occasion d'analyser des
extraits de romans, de nouvelles et de bandes dessinées et de les replacer dans le contexte européen, et international au
sens large.
Thematic Workshop n° 2 Creative Writing Laboratory:
The French language as a constraint
Si toute écriture littéraire implique des contraintes, l’écriture dans une langue étrangère se mesure à une contrainte à
l’apparence insurmontable : la langue elle-même. La littérature mondiale est néanmoins riche d’écrivains qui ont choisi de
s’exprimer dans une langue seconde, parfois apprise tardivement. Pour des raisons historiques et politiques, le français a
été l’une des langues les plus souvent choisies par ces auteurs, que l’on peut définir translingues. Ecrit-on différemment
dans une langue étrangère ? Cette contrainte peut-elle contribuer à « libérer l’écriture » ? L’écrivain translingue se soumet-
il à d’autres insoupçonnables obligations ? Notre séminaire abordera ces questions. Chaque séance sera organisée en
deux temps : d’abord, nous lirons des extraits choisis d’auteurs dont la langue d’écriture n’est pas la langue maternelle ;
ensuite, nous nous confronterons à la pratique directe de l’écriture créative en français langue étrangère. Ainsi, nous
aurons l’occasion de (re)découvrir ensemble l’œuvre d’auteurs tels qu’Emil Cioran, Samuel Beckett, Ghérasim Luca, Jorge
Semprun, Agota Kristof, Claude Estéban, Milan Kundera ; et, bien évidemment, de nous laisser inspirer par leurs textes.
Thematic Workshop n° 3 France, as seen by the people:
Focus on contemporary and modern French cinema
De l’étranger, la vision du cinéma français est souvent celle d’un cinéma élitiste, symbolique ou (trop) esthétique. Un pur
cinéma d’auteur avec ses chefs-d’œuvre et ses ratés. La traversée que nous entendons proposer au moyen d’un corpus
de films choisis – considérés, certes, comme des films « populaires », mais axés sur une volonté maximale d’ouverture – a
pour but premier de faire découvrir une production autre par rapport à celle que l’on a tendance à mettre en avant :
une production qui n’a de cesse de se réinventer, de proposer, de chercher et qui, si elle n’implique pas la démesure
financière des superproductions hollywoodiennes, soutient une longue tradition narrative, ainsi qu’une vision du monde
juste et émouvante.
Thematic Workshop n° 4 Theater as a form of collective speaking :
role playing / simulations of situations
« Au début, avant la naissance du théâtre, devant les temples, il y avait des femmes dont la tâche était de rappeler les
défunts. Dans un premier temps, elles parlaient d’eux ; puis, sans même s’en apercevoir, elles se confondaient
complètement avec leurs âmes, habitées par leurs voix … »
Que signifie « incarner les mots », dans la pratique et au fil du temps ? Peut-on considérer l’interprétation d’un discours
produit par un tiers comme une œuvre nouvelle ? Le jeu d’acteur relève-t-il, à l’origine, d’une entreprise testimoniale ?
Dans quelle mesure peut-on continuer de nous poser ces questions aujourd’hui ?
