Automobile Dacia S.A.: Background
• Automobile Dacia S.A. is a Romanian car manufacturer adopting its name from
the historic region that makes up most of modern-day Romania.
• Founded in 1966, it is now a subsidiary of the French car manufacturer Renault.
• It is the biggest exporter in Romania; it accounts for 7.9 percent of Romania’s
total exports as of 2011.
• In terms of volume, the Dacia manufacturing plant in Mioveni, Argeș County is
currently Europe’s fifth-largest car manufacturing facility; a total of 412,718 units
(cars and CKD kits) were delivered in 2013.

4. Facilities
Automobile Dacia: Facilities
• The company’s only plant is located in Mioveni, Romania, along with its
headquarters; it has a production size of 350,000 vehicles every year.
• It is split into a number of sections: bodywork, painting, assembly, mechanical and
chassis, foundry, etc.
• It operates together with the Renault Technologie Roumanie manufacturing
centre; set up in 2006 and located in Bucharest, it also includes a styling office,
Renault Design Central Europe, and the testing centre in Titu, all of which opened
in 2010.
• In March 2005, a large historical centre, the International Logistic Network, was
built adjacent to the plant; from here, complete knock down (CKD) kits are
exported to other Renault production sites in Russia, Morocco, Colombia,
Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, Iran, and India.
• It is said to be the largest logistic centre of its type not only in the Renault Group,
but in the entire world automotive industry.
• The overall equivalent of the kits sent worldwide from the centre in 2012 was
920,646 vehicles.
• In addition, two Dacia models, the Lodgy and the Dokker vans, are produced
wholly at the Renault factory in Tangier, Morocco.

• The Dacia brand is sold throughout both Western and Eastern Europe, and to a
lesser extent, in part of North Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco), and in a
number of Middle Eastern countries.
• Renault has also manufactured Dacia models in its production plants in other
countries such as Russia, Iran, India, South Africa, Colombia, and Brazil; these
models have been sold under their own brand or other particular local brands,
including Mahindra, Lada, or Nissan.
• Dacia sold a total of 359,822 vehicles in 2012; almost 230,000 of them were
exported to Western Europe, mostly France and Germany.
• In addition to the domestic market, Dacia’s other crucial markets have been
Algeria, Turkey, Italy, and Spain.
• In 2014, the company accounted for 511,465 vehicles sold in forty-three different
countries, which broke another record and surpassed the 500,000 threshold.

• The members of a panel from fifteen countries award Autobest: Bulgaria, Croatia,
Czech Republic, Cyprus, Macedonia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia,
Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Malta.
• The members of the panel judge thirteen criteria, such as fuel consumption,
adaptability, roominess, and design.
• In 2005, the Dacia Logan won the award; six years later, the Dacia Duster was the
recipient.
