Over the last few years, I’ve been asked, ‘as the executive director, what is
your vision for Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland?’ After reflecting on
knowledge and experience gained since joining the organization three
years ago, the answer comes to me easily:
With a steadfast commitment to meeting the increasing needs of a
rapidly growing and diverse aging population, Meals on Wheels of Central
Maryland will be widely recognized as the leading provider of quality
nutrition and innovative human support services to seniors, people
with disabilities and those living with critical or life threatening
illnesses throughout Maryland.
This vision springs from a deep appreciation and understanding of the
wide and varied needs of those we serve, the current understanding of the
link between nutrition and health, and the role and impact of health care
reform on our clients and the community. This, along with unwavering
support of the Board of Directors and our President, Catherine Max,
has led to an understanding of not only what is necessary, but also,
what is possible.
Our focus over the last three years has been on measurable impact, yielding
new programs and service offerings. Programs and services such as Healing
Meals, Helping Hands, the Grocery Assistance Program, case management
and our newest initiative, HUBS (Housing Upgrades to Benefit Seniors) all
point to the critical need for expansion in our area of focus, to keep the
aging and disabled living safely and independently at home.
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland has been a leader in thinking what is
possible to help our clients sustain their optimal health, maintain economic
stability, and improve their overall quality of life.
Our early involvement in community discussions on nutrition, housing,
health and health care reform, have positioned us well in a rapidly changing
environment—enabling us to do more.
By all measures, FY15 has been a successful year, with generous support
from old and new friends and new opportunities for solid collaborations
and partnerships. It is this, coupled with our personal approach to providing
nutritious meals and innovative support services that distinguishes us from
other programs.
We are well positioned for the future, and prepared to meet the diverse and
unique needs of everyone we serve. Without partners like you and those
you will read about in this report, we would only focus on the necessary,
without attention to what is truly possible.

Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland (MOWCM) works with dozens of
other nonprofits, governmental agencies, local businesses, and members
of the faith community, to extend our reach, optimize access to services
for our clients, and maximize our own resources. Leveraging our resources
this way, allows us to stretch every dollar to provide the greatest possible
impact; and ensures that our clients have access to resources Meals on
Wheels does not provide.
Partnerships with churches, senior centers, and residences, and privately
owned businesses have provided space for us to use as distribution sites,
packing sites, and offices. Cooperative agreements with local universities
and colleges bring dozens of interns each year who contribute their time,
energy, and enthusiasm providing critical additional services to our clients,
while gaining invaluable experience in their fields.
The local Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) program
places older adults as office assistants at MOWCM at no cost to the agency,
and partnerships with disabilities groups bring us volunteers who pack pet
food for our Kibble Connection Program, deliver meals to clients, and help
out in the kitchen. Meanwhile, our affiliations with organizations such as the
ASSOCIATED, which provides funding for our Kosher Meal Program, assure
that we are able to serve all who need us.
Some of our most exciting partnerships though, are those that provide
critically needed services that MOWCM doesn’t offer. Through our
association with Benefits Data Trust, all clients are screened, and assisted in
accessing, all the government benefits for which they are eligible. Funding
from the USDA, through the Maryland Dept. of Human Resources provides
support for outreach to low income clients, eligible for, but not accessing,
the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Maryland.
Our long-time affiliation with the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, has
resulted in multiple clients being included in studies that brought them
significant benefits at no cost, and through our new partnership with Allegis
Home Physicians, we’ve worked to get our homebound clients medical help.
In collaboration with the LIGHT project, the Veteran’s Administration, CHAI
(Comprehensive Housing Assistance), and multiple other agencies, our
clients are able to complete needed home repairs.
Accordingly, we are especially excited about some of our newest
collaborative efforts, with the HUBS program (Housing Upgrades
Benefiting Seniors), which brings MOWCM together with Civic Works,
The Baltimore Green & Healthy Homes Initiative, Neighborhood Housing
Services (NHS) of Baltimore, and Rebuilding Together Baltimore to provide
case managers who can assist low income seniors in Baltimore City to
access the programs and resources necessary to make critical repairs,
complete home modifications to improve accessibility, and get the help
they need to make their homes more energy efficient and affordable.
With new funding from the United Way of Central Maryland, we are
expanding our Grocery Assistance Program, and for the first time working
with Area Agencies on Aging and other community partners to provide
shopping services for elderly and disabled individuals of low and moderate
incomes who are not yet home delivered meal clients. Finally, working with
the Salvation Army, knitting groups, and gardening clubs, we are providing
special gifts for many of our most isolated clients.
The future is brighter for our clients because of the varied connections we
have built. The ability to serve their wider needs is a result of our shift of
focus, from outputs to positive outcomes.

“We remain committed to providing support to older adults to live
dignified, meaningful, and engaged lives in the community and to
maintain their independence for as long as possible.”
“We address immediate needs vital to the health of the communities
we serve through a focus on…addressing basic human services,
such as hunger.”
“Our mission is to ensure that our County residents have the resources
they need to grow, thrive, and live with dignity.”
The above mission and value statements derive from four of over
twenty-three corporate, private and government funders who provided
grant awards to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland (MOWCM) this
past year to help support the programs and services we provide to our
homebound clients.
Upon closer examination, you’ll note that the above statements contain
some of the same terminology contained in our own mission statement,
to enable people to live independently at home through the provision of
nutritious meals, personal contact and related services. The fact that there is
synchronicity and commonality in mission and values between MOWCM
and each of our funders is not by chance, but by choice.
Just as MOWCM determined its mission back in 1960, our funding partners
determined their philanthropic focus just as intently and with similar
commitment to achieving their goal of making a difference in the lives of
people in their local communities. It has been an exciting and fulfilling
experience for MOWCM, to receive inquiries from funders themselves who
value our reputation for quality service to older adults and who ask to sit
down with us to see how together we can achieve our common goals.
Many of our foundation partners provide grant awards for necessary and
invaluable general operating support for our programs, and to support
other organizational infrastructure costs. Others, who provide leadership
in identifying and responding to aging issues and concerns, have been
instrumental in joining with us to build our organizational capacity in
response to emerging phenomena in the aging field.
The growth of our Targeted Case Management service is such an
example. As we became aware that a growing number of our clients
were facing complex needs that threatened their ability to remain
living independently, we sought and received in FY12 initial foundation
support from The Abell Foundation for a pilot case management project
in Baltimore City. That pilot served a very limited number of clients, but
illustrated the impact of the service on the ability of clients to remain living
safely and independently at home for longer periods of time.
Based on that success, The Abell Foundation renewed its support for
another year, helping 85 clients extend their independence. Yet another
foundation following The Abell Foundation, The Harry and Jeanette
Weinberg Foundation stepped up with major funding support for Targeted
Case Management in 2014 and 2015, helping 183 clients extend their time
at home up to 18 more months than anticipated without case management
assistance. That’s quite an achievement, leading The Marion I. and Henry
J. Knott Foundation to provide funding support for our Targeted Case
Management in 2016. Among these three foundations, strong mission
commonality has helped Meals on Wheels make a critical difference in the
lives of our clients with the most complex and intractable needs.
Our Grocery Assistance Program (GAP) is another example of capacity
building driven by foundation support. Staff administrative support is a key
element of GAP. As the efficacy of the program has grown over the years,
United Way of Central Maryland stepped up to support GAP, helping us
respond to an increasing number of seniors who value the program as a
way to augment the daily nutrition we provide and help them obtain other
necessary household items that help them to live independently. Now,
thanks to that support this program is also available to clients who are not
yet receiving home delivered meals.
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is thankful that so many foundations
in our region have helped us expand our capacity to serve older individuals
in our local communities and have joined with us in this connecting
principle—safe, healthy, independent living is an aspiration that we can
fulfill together on behalf of our clients.

There were two elegant, wine-paired dinners given in December and
February by the incomparable culinary genius, Jerry Edwards and Chef’s
Expressions. These cutting edge, dining experiences were set in the
sumptuous surroundings of the Gramercy Mansion and proceeds were
graciously donated to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland.
We were delighted to continue our partnership with Chef’s Expressions at
our Culinary Extravaganza event held May 18th at the Grand Lodge in Hunt
Valley and presented by BGE.
The Culinary Extravaganza, now christened, Hats and Horses, brought
together a talented community of twenty chefs from around the region.
The original idea for the Culinary Extravaganza was suggested years ago
by longtime MOWCM supporter and spokesperson, Jerry Edwards, of
Chef’s Expressions.
The chefs and their celebration of food, gave this race-themed evening of
raffles, auctions and activities a truly unique spin, with foods of all kinds
from mini-entrees to chocolate truffles. The fundraising success of the
event topped the previous year, with over $180,000 raised to benefit our
homebound clients, making possible 22,500 meals for seniors.
MOWCM has increased its focus on community connections in the last year,
with attendance at numerous community wellness events and neighborhood
celebrations. Our outreach has paid off in multiple ways including the
strengthening of our programs and fine-tuning of their scope.
On Father’s Day, we held our Sprint Triathlon, at the South Carroll Swim
Club in Westminster, MD. A relatively new event for us, held in a beautiful
setting, we were pleased with 2015’s turnout of athletes from Carroll County
and neighboring cities, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Frederick.

Our Ties to the
Community

As a competition designed for many skill levels, the Meals on
Wheels of Central Maryland Father’s Day Sprint Triathlon has all
the makings of a growing community and family tradition.
Running, swimming and biking, combine to create a challenging
competition in a setting of rolling hills. Expertly run by Ken Racine’s
staff at Racine MultiSports, many of the entrants walked away with
medals to mark their triumph and a personal best.
Third-party events also took off this year with a new partner,
The Gathering. The Gathering’s chief organizers, Damian Bohager
and Jennifer Berg, included us in the planning for exciting food-
related events.
We collaborated with them on the first-ever Taste of 3 Cities-
Baltimore event. This gathering of food trucks resulted in a
festive community get-together at Baltimore’s Patterson Park
where hungry attendees voted for their favorite foods, dished
out from the colorfully painted trucks. A portion of the proceeds
benefitted MOWCM and gave us a chance to showcase our
delicious food, as well.
Later in June, MOWCM was the beneficiary of another unique
concept for foodies, The Mason-Dixon Master Chef Tournament,
held at The Inn at the Colonnade in Baltimore. This was a series
of eight cooking contests, performed in an open kitchen setting,
starting in June with varied themes such as Battle Backyard BBQ,
Battle New Orleans and Battle Chocolate.
The competitions were designed and organized by Eric Folkart
and Karen Folkart to engage the food lover’s palate and eliminate
the crowd of competitors until the final competition, on Sunday,
August 16th—the Battle Avant-Garde, saw one winner announced
Jirat Suphrom-In, Executive Chef at My Thai Restaurant.
We look forward to continuing our association with this
competition and building on its appeal in 2016.

Beyond our frequent contact with our clients as we deliver meals,
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland strives to make an impact
on the communities we serve.
Our partnership with community events allows us to spread the word
of the importance of our mission and the impact that is so personal,
with rippling effects into the surrounding towns we serve. A strong
community is made up of a diverse population. Our clients are often
the foundation and builders of those communities.
This spring we saw a community, the city of Baltimore, in crisis and
witnessed among our volunteers, a true commitment to specific
clients and also our mission and purpose.

In April, a decision was made to not deliver
meals in certain neighborhoods because of
widespread unrest. That decision was made
after careful deliberation and was ultimately
a safety measure. Staff and volunteers in the
affected areas, however, were determined
to meet the needs of their clients and
moved past the barricades to serve those
in need. A human bond prompted acts
of personal courage. Meals on Wheels of
Central Maryland’s volunteers distinguished
themselves in the community’s heart.

An Extended Staff
of VolunteersEllen Falk, Director, Volunteer Services
It has been an amazing year for the Volunteer Department. Our
volunteers are dedicated individuals that serve homebound clients
their daily meals along with a friendly smile, and do so many other
things such as deliver pet food, engage in companion visits, shop for
groceries, and even pack meals in our kitchen.
In FY15, our volunteers gave 70,175 hours and drove 494,528 miles—
an estimated value of $2.1 million dollars— toward our mission of
keeping the aging living safely and independently in their homes.
We know that without our dedicated volunteers, who often deliver
regardless of the weather and other circumstances, many clients
would be left hungry and alone.
Beginning in January, we launched our new Volunteer Orientation
and Training program. New and seasoned volunteers are
encouraged to attend an orientation session, which are held every
Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at our Main Office. The orientation
session provides key information about our services, clients and
volunteer opportunities. We know that a volunteer’s experience is
more rewarding if they are trained well to do the job.
2015 held many high points including our 3rd Annual Volunteer
Fashion Show, which saw record attendance as our volunteers
walked the runway at Boscov’s of White Marsh to model spring
fashions. The show featured volunteers who have been delivering
meals, grocery shopping, or were part of our knitting/crocheting
group from one year to 29 years, with proceeds from the ticket sales
going to MOWCM.
Our homebound clients received many special items this year, such
as homemade knitted/crocheted scarves collected from volunteers
throughout the country and Mugs of Love made by employees at
T. Rowe Price and Horseshoe Casino. In addition to Mugs of Love,
Horseshoe Casino employees volunteered in the kitchen, and
collected canned goods. Ascension Lutheran Church in Towson
collected over 240 shelf-stable food and personal hygiene items
for blizzard bags, and SC&H Group made decorated mason jars
with flags and mock votive candles to brighten many of our clients’
homes for the 4th of July. Area garden clubs assembled floral
arrangements, school groups created laminated place mats and
holiday cards, all made with love to brighten a senior’s day.
Many businesses chipped in this year. We had a record number
of volunteers in our kitchen, and more groups participating in
Days of Giving to assist with packing and other projects than ever
before. We teamed with OneMain Financial’s 10th Annual Global
Community Day, hosting 20 employees who packed over 10,000
meal items, while Cigna-Healthspring had a Month of Giving
where over 50 employees packed meals over five days in June.
Though we have seen a record number of new volunteers,
volunteers to deliver the meals are always needed in order to move
clients from the waiting list. Our volunteers are diverse; all have
something to give. We work with many disability groups who deliver
with their caseworkers, while business employees have found
it satisfying to volunteer during their lunch hour with our Lunch
Bunch program.
9 | Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland | mealsonwheelsmd.org
Opportunities to volunteer are as varied as our volunteers
themselves, MOWCM’s Grocery Assistance Program (GAP)
provides clients with someone to shop for them once or twice a
month. Many clients receive calls from a wellness check-in volunteer
twice a week. Our Kibble Connection Program remains strong
with a recent donation of dog and cat food from Purina, and offers
our volunteers a twist on the delivery of food. We work with many
different individuals who are young or old, retired or working,
or in school who volunteer once a week or once a month. If you
would like to join our group of dedicated volunteers please call our
Volunteer Services Department.

  • 3. Over the last few years, I’ve been asked, ‘as the executive director, what is your vision for Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland?’ After reflecting on knowledge and experience gained since joining the organization three years ago, the answer comes to me easily: With a steadfast commitment to meeting the increasing needs of a rapidly growing and diverse aging population, Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland will be widely recognized as the leading provider of quality nutrition and innovative human support services to seniors, people with disabilities and those living with critical or life threatening illnesses throughout Maryland. This vision springs from a deep appreciation and understanding of the wide and varied needs of those we serve, the current understanding of the link between nutrition and health, and the role and impact of health care reform on our clients and the community. This, along with unwavering support of the Board of Directors and our President, Catherine Max, has led to an understanding of not only what is necessary, but also, what is possible. Our focus over the last three years has been on measurable impact, yielding new programs and service offerings. Programs and services such as Healing Meals, Helping Hands, the Grocery Assistance Program, case management and our newest initiative, HUBS (Housing Upgrades to Benefit Seniors) all point to the critical need for expansion in our area of focus, to keep the aging and disabled living safely and independently at home. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland has been a leader in thinking what is possible to help our clients sustain their optimal health, maintain economic stability, and improve their overall quality of life. Our early involvement in community discussions on nutrition, housing, health and health care reform, have positioned us well in a rapidly changing environment—enabling us to do more. By all measures, FY15 has been a successful year, with generous support from old and new friends and new opportunities for solid collaborations and partnerships. It is this, coupled with our personal approach to providing nutritious meals and innovative support services that distinguishes us from other programs. We are well positioned for the future, and prepared to meet the diverse and unique needs of everyone we serve. Without partners like you and those you will read about in this report, we would only focus on the necessary, without attention to what is truly possible. • 4. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland (MOWCM) works with dozens of other nonprofits, governmental agencies, local businesses, and members of the faith community, to extend our reach, optimize access to services for our clients, and maximize our own resources. Leveraging our resources this way, allows us to stretch every dollar to provide the greatest possible impact; and ensures that our clients have access to resources Meals on Wheels does not provide. Partnerships with churches, senior centers, and residences, and privately owned businesses have provided space for us to use as distribution sites, packing sites, and offices. Cooperative agreements with local universities and colleges bring dozens of interns each year who contribute their time, energy, and enthusiasm providing critical additional services to our clients, while gaining invaluable experience in their fields. The local Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) program places older adults as office assistants at MOWCM at no cost to the agency, and partnerships with disabilities groups bring us volunteers who pack pet food for our Kibble Connection Program, deliver meals to clients, and help out in the kitchen. Meanwhile, our affiliations with organizations such as the ASSOCIATED, which provides funding for our Kosher Meal Program, assure that we are able to serve all who need us. Some of our most exciting partnerships though, are those that provide critically needed services that MOWCM doesn’t offer. Through our association with Benefits Data Trust, all clients are screened, and assisted in accessing, all the government benefits for which they are eligible. Funding from the USDA, through the Maryland Dept. of Human Resources provides support for outreach to low income clients, eligible for, but not accessing, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Maryland. Our long-time affiliation with the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, has resulted in multiple clients being included in studies that brought them significant benefits at no cost, and through our new partnership with Allegis Home Physicians, we’ve worked to get our homebound clients medical help. In collaboration with the LIGHT project, the Veteran’s Administration, CHAI (Comprehensive Housing Assistance), and multiple other agencies, our clients are able to complete needed home repairs. Accordingly, we are especially excited about some of our newest collaborative efforts, with the HUBS program (Housing Upgrades Benefiting Seniors), which brings MOWCM together with Civic Works, The Baltimore Green & Healthy Homes Initiative, Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) of Baltimore, and Rebuilding Together Baltimore to provide case managers who can assist low income seniors in Baltimore City to access the programs and resources necessary to make critical repairs, complete home modifications to improve accessibility, and get the help they need to make their homes more energy efficient and affordable. With new funding from the United Way of Central Maryland, we are expanding our Grocery Assistance Program, and for the first time working with Area Agencies on Aging and other community partners to provide shopping services for elderly and disabled individuals of low and moderate incomes who are not yet home delivered meal clients. Finally, working with the Salvation Army, knitting groups, and gardening clubs, we are providing special gifts for many of our most isolated clients. The future is brighter for our clients because of the varied connections we have built. The ability to serve their wider needs is a result of our shift of focus, from outputs to positive outcomes. A Mission Built on CollaborationBarbara Levin, Director, Client Services 3 | Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland | mealsonwheelsmd.org
  • 5. Foundation Partners Build CapacityT o n i G i a n f o r t i , D i r e c t o r, I n s t i t u t i o n a l G i v i n g “We remain committed to providing support to older adults to live dignified, meaningful, and engaged lives in the community and to maintain their independence for as long as possible.” “We address immediate needs vital to the health of the communities we serve through a focus on…addressing basic human services, such as hunger.” “Our mission is to ensure that our County residents have the resources they need to grow, thrive, and live with dignity.” The above mission and value statements derive from four of over twenty-three corporate, private and government funders who provided grant awards to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland (MOWCM) this past year to help support the programs and services we provide to our homebound clients. Upon closer examination, you’ll note that the above statements contain some of the same terminology contained in our own mission statement, to enable people to live independently at home through the provision of nutritious meals, personal contact and related services. The fact that there is synchronicity and commonality in mission and values between MOWCM and each of our funders is not by chance, but by choice. Just as MOWCM determined its mission back in 1960, our funding partners determined their philanthropic focus just as intently and with similar commitment to achieving their goal of making a difference in the lives of people in their local communities. It has been an exciting and fulfilling experience for MOWCM, to receive inquiries from funders themselves who value our reputation for quality service to older adults and who ask to sit down with us to see how together we can achieve our common goals. Many of our foundation partners provide grant awards for necessary and invaluable general operating support for our programs, and to support other organizational infrastructure costs. Others, who provide leadership in identifying and responding to aging issues and concerns, have been instrumental in joining with us to build our organizational capacity in response to emerging phenomena in the aging field. The growth of our Targeted Case Management service is such an example. As we became aware that a growing number of our clients were facing complex needs that threatened their ability to remain living independently, we sought and received in FY12 initial foundation support from The Abell Foundation for a pilot case management project in Baltimore City. That pilot served a very limited number of clients, but illustrated the impact of the service on the ability of clients to remain living safely and independently at home for longer periods of time. Based on that success, The Abell Foundation renewed its support for another year, helping 85 clients extend their independence. Yet another foundation following The Abell Foundation, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation stepped up with major funding support for Targeted Case Management in 2014 and 2015, helping 183 clients extend their time at home up to 18 more months than anticipated without case management assistance. That’s quite an achievement, leading The Marion I. and Henry J. Knott Foundation to provide funding support for our Targeted Case Management in 2016. Among these three foundations, strong mission commonality has helped Meals on Wheels make a critical difference in the lives of our clients with the most complex and intractable needs. Our Grocery Assistance Program (GAP) is another example of capacity building driven by foundation support. Staff administrative support is a key element of GAP. As the efficacy of the program has grown over the years, United Way of Central Maryland stepped up to support GAP, helping us respond to an increasing number of seniors who value the program as a way to augment the daily nutrition we provide and help them obtain other necessary household items that help them to live independently. Now, thanks to that support this program is also available to clients who are not yet receiving home delivered meals. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is thankful that so many foundations in our region have helped us expand our capacity to serve older individuals in our local communities and have joined with us in this connecting principle—safe, healthy, independent living is an aspiration that we can fulfill together on behalf of our clients. • 6. There were two elegant, wine-paired dinners given in December and February by the incomparable culinary genius, Jerry Edwards and Chef’s Expressions. These cutting edge, dining experiences were set in the sumptuous surroundings of the Gramercy Mansion and proceeds were graciously donated to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland. We were delighted to continue our partnership with Chef’s Expressions at our Culinary Extravaganza event held May 18th at the Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley and presented by BGE. The Culinary Extravaganza, now christened, Hats and Horses, brought together a talented community of twenty chefs from around the region. The original idea for the Culinary Extravaganza was suggested years ago by longtime MOWCM supporter and spokesperson, Jerry Edwards, of Chef’s Expressions. The chefs and their celebration of food, gave this race-themed evening of raffles, auctions and activities a truly unique spin, with foods of all kinds from mini-entrees to chocolate truffles. The fundraising success of the event topped the previous year, with over $180,000 raised to benefit our homebound clients, making possible 22,500 meals for seniors. MOWCM has increased its focus on community connections in the last year, with attendance at numerous community wellness events and neighborhood celebrations. Our outreach has paid off in multiple ways including the strengthening of our programs and fine-tuning of their scope. On Father’s Day, we held our Sprint Triathlon, at the South Carroll Swim Club in Westminster, MD. A relatively new event for us, held in a beautiful setting, we were pleased with 2015’s turnout of athletes from Carroll County and neighboring cities, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Frederick. Events Highlight Our Ties to the Community 5 | Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland | mealsonwheelsmd.org
  • 7. As a competition designed for many skill levels, the Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland Father’s Day Sprint Triathlon has all the makings of a growing community and family tradition. Running, swimming and biking, combine to create a challenging competition in a setting of rolling hills. Expertly run by Ken Racine’s staff at Racine MultiSports, many of the entrants walked away with medals to mark their triumph and a personal best. Third-party events also took off this year with a new partner, The Gathering. The Gathering’s chief organizers, Damian Bohager and Jennifer Berg, included us in the planning for exciting food- related events. We collaborated with them on the first-ever Taste of 3 Cities- Baltimore event. This gathering of food trucks resulted in a festive community get-together at Baltimore’s Patterson Park where hungry attendees voted for their favorite foods, dished out from the colorfully painted trucks. A portion of the proceeds benefitted MOWCM and gave us a chance to showcase our delicious food, as well. Later in June, MOWCM was the beneficiary of another unique concept for foodies, The Mason-Dixon Master Chef Tournament, held at The Inn at the Colonnade in Baltimore. This was a series of eight cooking contests, performed in an open kitchen setting, starting in June with varied themes such as Battle Backyard BBQ, Battle New Orleans and Battle Chocolate. The competitions were designed and organized by Eric Folkart and Karen Folkart to engage the food lover’s palate and eliminate the crowd of competitors until the final competition, on Sunday, August 16th—the Battle Avant-Garde, saw one winner announced Jirat Suphrom-In, Executive Chef at My Thai Restaurant. We look forward to continuing our association with this competition and building on its appeal in 2016. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland | mealsonwheelsmd.org | 6
  • 8. Beyond our frequent contact with our clients as we deliver meals, Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland strives to make an impact on the communities we serve. Our partnership with community events allows us to spread the word of the importance of our mission and the impact that is so personal, with rippling effects into the surrounding towns we serve. A strong community is made up of a diverse population. Our clients are often the foundation and builders of those communities. This spring we saw a community, the city of Baltimore, in crisis and witnessed among our volunteers, a true commitment to specific clients and also our mission and purpose. Community Outreach Results in Expanded Partnerships 7 | Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland | mealsonwheelsmd.org
  • 9. In April, a decision was made to not deliver meals in certain neighborhoods because of widespread unrest. That decision was made after careful deliberation and was ultimately a safety measure. Staff and volunteers in the affected areas, however, were determined to meet the needs of their clients and moved past the barricades to serve those in need. A human bond prompted acts of personal courage. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland’s volunteers distinguished themselves in the community’s heart. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland has increased its focus on community connections in the last year, with attendance at numerous community wellness events and neighborhood celebrations. Our outreach has paid off in multiple ways including the strengthening of our programs and fine-tuning their scope. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland | mealsonwheelsmd.org | 8
  • 10. An Extended Staff of VolunteersEllen Falk, Director, Volunteer Services It has been an amazing year for the Volunteer Department. Our volunteers are dedicated individuals that serve homebound clients their daily meals along with a friendly smile, and do so many other things such as deliver pet food, engage in companion visits, shop for groceries, and even pack meals in our kitchen. In FY15, our volunteers gave 70,175 hours and drove 494,528 miles— an estimated value of $2.1 million dollars— toward our mission of keeping the aging living safely and independently in their homes. We know that without our dedicated volunteers, who often deliver regardless of the weather and other circumstances, many clients would be left hungry and alone. Beginning in January, we launched our new Volunteer Orientation and Training program. New and seasoned volunteers are encouraged to attend an orientation session, which are held every Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at our Main Office. The orientation session provides key information about our services, clients and volunteer opportunities. We know that a volunteer’s experience is more rewarding if they are trained well to do the job. 2015 held many high points including our 3rd Annual Volunteer Fashion Show, which saw record attendance as our volunteers walked the runway at Boscov’s of White Marsh to model spring fashions. The show featured volunteers who have been delivering meals, grocery shopping, or were part of our knitting/crocheting group from one year to 29 years, with proceeds from the ticket sales going to MOWCM. Our homebound clients received many special items this year, such as homemade knitted/crocheted scarves collected from volunteers throughout the country and Mugs of Love made by employees at T. Rowe Price and Horseshoe Casino. In addition to Mugs of Love, Horseshoe Casino employees volunteered in the kitchen, and collected canned goods. Ascension Lutheran Church in Towson collected over 240 shelf-stable food and personal hygiene items for blizzard bags, and SC&H Group made decorated mason jars with flags and mock votive candles to brighten many of our clients’ homes for the 4th of July. Area garden clubs assembled floral arrangements, school groups created laminated place mats and holiday cards, all made with love to brighten a senior’s day. Many businesses chipped in this year. We had a record number of volunteers in our kitchen, and more groups participating in Days of Giving to assist with packing and other projects than ever before. We teamed with OneMain Financial’s 10th Annual Global Community Day, hosting 20 employees who packed over 10,000 meal items, while Cigna-Healthspring had a Month of Giving where over 50 employees packed meals over five days in June. Though we have seen a record number of new volunteers, volunteers to deliver the meals are always needed in order to move clients from the waiting list. Our volunteers are diverse; all have something to give. We work with many disability groups who deliver with their caseworkers, while business employees have found it satisfying to volunteer during their lunch hour with our Lunch Bunch program. 9 | Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland | mealsonwheelsmd.org
  • 11. Opportunities to volunteer are as varied as our volunteers themselves, MOWCM’s Grocery Assistance Program (GAP) provides clients with someone to shop for them once or twice a month. Many clients receive calls from a wellness check-in volunteer twice a week. Our Kibble Connection Program remains strong with a recent donation of dog and cat food from Purina, and offers our volunteers a twist on the delivery of food. We work with many different individuals who are young or old, retired or working, or in school who volunteer once a week or once a month. If you would like to join our group of dedicated volunteers please call our Volunteer Services Department. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland | mealsonwheelsmd.org | 10
