3. Anemia in pregnancy continues to be the major public health problem in the world. Anemia causes direct as well as indirect maternal deaths from cardiac failure, hemorrhage, infection and pre-eclampcia. Among anemia, iron deficiency anemia is the most common. Nutritional deficiency is the commonest cause for iron deficiency anemia, especially in developing countries like ours.
4. The prevalence of anemia in developing countries is relatively high (33% to 75%). According to NFHS-III (2005-2006) prevalence of anemia among pregnant women in India is 58%.
6. To find out the hospital based prevalence or percentage of anemia amongst pregnant women. To assess various socio-demographic factors associated with anemia in pregnancy.
8. The present study was conducted in obstetric and gynae OPD of one of the private hospital of Bareilly district. cross sectional study design. Duration - Jan.2010 to May2010
9. The respondents were the pregnant women attending Obst. & gynae OPD in the hospital. All the women attending the antenatal clinic from Jan 2010- May 2010 were screened for anemia by hemoglobin estimation by Cyanmeth-hemoglobin method. A total of 968 pregnant women were registered for the study during this period.
10. A hemoglobin value of less than 11.0 g/dL was considered to be anemia in pregnancy. Study tools – pretested, predesigned structure schedule. Chi square test was used for statistical analysis.
18. Anemia was found to be significantly associated with age, occupation and religion. Most of the women in each age group were suffering from mild anemia. Although Anemia was found to be slightly more in women with irregular visit, increasing parity and abortion but no significant association has been found.
