  13. 13. WHAT IS THE PROPER UNDERSTANDING ABOUT WORK-LIFE BALANCE?
  14. 14. “I‟m the CEO of two organizations … work-life balance is something I grapple with all the time. For me, it‟s how I create space and time for myself and for the people I care about it in my life. Natalie Madeira Cofield, CEO of Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce and the founder of Walker’s Legacy
  15. 15. “I really don‟t like that word „balance.‟ It really makes everything sound like it‟s either right or wrong, black or white, I recommend people to consider „work-life design‟ because it gives you a healthier perspective.” Ari Horie, founder and CEO of Women’s Startup Lab
  16. 16. NICK TARANTO, COFOUNDER OF PLATED.COM “You can only cut so many pieces from the pie. Work-life balance means making decisions around where, who, and what you‟re going to sacrifice, because you can‟t do it all,”
  17. 17. Work-Life Balance does not mean an equal balance. Trying to schedule an equal number of hours for each of your various work and personal activities is usually unrewarding and unrealistic. Your best individual work-life balance will vary over time, often on a daily basis. The right balance for you today will probably be different for you tomorrow. The right balance for you when you are single will be different when you marry, or if you have children. There is no perfect, one-size fits all, balance you should be striving for. The best work-life balance is different for each of us because we all have different priorities and different lives.

  20. 20. Scoring: Give yourself 1 point for each “true” response.  0-2: Your life is in pretty good balance; just be sure to do what you can to guard that balance.  3-5: Your work/life balance is teetering on the edge; now is the time to make changes before the problems overwhelm you.  5+: Your life is out of balance; you need to take immediate action to make changes in your work and your life before things start crashing around you.
  21. 21. Workload can relate to the quantity of the work or the quality of activity to be completed. Role conflict: How a person behaves in a given job depends on many factors. A combination of the expectations and demands an employee places upon him or herself and those of co-workers results in a set of forces called role pressures.

  27. 27. Case study 2: The employer An established financial services organization was experiencing significant growth, having recently acquired a number of smaller companies. The company had a reputation within the industry for demanding a heavy commitment from its employees. The issue Senior management was concerned about stress levels within the organization, especially among those who were involved in meeting sales targets. Employee morale was low and staff turnover increasing. Sales performance had traditionally been good, but achieved at a high personal cost in terms of stress and hours worked. A stress analysis revealed stress problems derived from three key areas: the nature of the role itself, poor internal relationships, and a lack of career development opportunities within the company. Vitally, this was frustrated by an absence of stress coping strategies.
