  3. 3. Assuring educational opportunity for every child Assuring educational opportunity for every child Intercultural Development Research Association Mathematics or Numeracy? Nu·mer·a·cy (arithmetic, numerical literacy) 1) the branch of mathematics that deals with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division 2) the use of numbers in calculations
  4. 4. Assuring educational opportunity for every child Assuring educational opportunity for every child Intercultural Development Research Association Mathematics or Numeracy? Math·e·mat·ics 1) the study of the relationships among numbers, shapes, and quantities, 2) it uses signs, symbols, and proofs and includes arithmetic, algebra, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry.
  5. 5. Assuring educational opportunity for every child Assuring educational opportunity for every child Intercultural Development Research Association Why is numeracy important? • Numeracy develops logical thinking and reasoning strategies in their daily lives • Numeracy is used to solve problems and make sense of time, numbers, patterns and shapes for activities like cooking, reading a map or bill, reading instructions and even playing sports
  6. 6. Assuring educational opportunity for every child Assuring educational opportunity for every child Intercultural Development Research Association Let’s think about 48? • What is 1 less than 48? • What is 10 more than 48? • How far back to 40? • How many more to get to 50? • Where is 48 positioned on a number line? • What is half of 48?
  7. 7. Assuring educational opportunity for every child Assuring educational opportunity for every child Intercultural Development Research Association Let’s Talk Numbers • How many ways can a number be represented? • Why is it important? • When will students use this knowledge?
  8. 8. Assuring educational opportunity for every child Assuring educational opportunity for every child Intercultural Development Research Association Numeracy at Home • Numeracy involves using mathematics efficiently in our day-to-day lives. Every day we use number, measurement and space. • Each time we shop or go to the bank we use numbers. • Our understanding of space is used to pack a lunchbox or to park a car. • We need to understand how to measure things when we sew, cook, build, tell the time or listen to a weather report.
  9. 9. Assuring educational opportunity for every child Assuring educational opportunity for every child Intercultural Development Research Association Helping your child with counting • One of the earliest skills children have to develop is counting. • To “count” we need to match the number words with the correct number of “things”, then we need to remember the numbers in order.
  10. 10. Assuring educational opportunity for every child Assuring educational opportunity for every child Intercultural Development Research Association Helping your child with Measurement • Children need to observe how measurement is used in practical situations. • First, they need to talk about the things that we can measure and the things that we can use to measure them. • Then they will need to learn about the units we use for measuring, such as liters, kilograms and meters.
