Notas del editor
Hello, everyone.
My name is Yohei Kurata, from Tokyo Metropolitan University.
In this presentation, I‘d like to introduce a new tool for tour planning.
I would‘t say this is a tour recommender.
Rather, I wanna emphasize that this is an interactive plannner.
So, let me state the problem.
Imagine that, you are in Dublin, and you have only four hours for sightseeing.
Where do you go?
Well, actually, this is my scenario on this Friday.
You know, Ireland has a lot of wonderful places, like this.
And it was my long dream to visit these places.
But, unfortunately, they are too far away at this time.
So, I opened a map of Dublin, and started to think about my plan.
But I noticed there are still lots of places to visit in Dublin.
The question is what is the best route for four hours?
Well, is this the problem only for me, or only for very busy Japanese people?
I say, the same problem may trouble you if you go to Japan!
For example, this is Kyoto, and there are many famous temples and shrines.
But many European say, I would go around Kyoto in one day.
How do they do that?
Well, to solve the difficulty of tour planning, we have been developing an interactive tour planner called CT-Planner.
In ENTER2011, I introduced this version.
Now, I’d like to introduce this version, namely, CT-Planner4.
This version is available online at this URL.
So, this is today’s agenda.
First, I show the demonstration of CT-Planner.
Then, I will explain its design concepts.
Thirdly, I will talk about the results of its evaluation test.
And finally, I will talk about secret future goal.
So, let me start the demonstration.
If you access this URL…
You will see this screen at first.
Here, you select your destination, and also your favorite travel style from these five.
So, let me select Yokohama, and City walking.
And let’s start planning.
Then, you’ll see the next screen.
This part shows the tour conditions.
This part shows your preference.
You see, initial values are already assigned based on your choice of favorite travel style.
And this part shows your tour plan.
Now it shows the standard plan in Yokohama for tour hours.
If you click a point of interest on this map …
You will see its information.
Similarly, if you click a POI on this schedule…
You will see its information and location.
Let me close it.
You can change your tour time.
For instance, let me change it to three hours.
Now the tour route becomes longer than before.
You can change the start and goal locations.
For instance, let me click this Bashamichi Station…
And click this Start button…
Now, the tour starts from Bashamichi Station.
You can also change the character of your tour.
For instance, let me click here on this radar chart.
Then, the focus is more assigned to culture.
And the tour visits more museums.
Similarly, let me click her on this slider.
Now, the tour visit more minor spots where not so many tourists visit.
You can also request directly where you want to visit.
For instance, if you want to visit Yokohama Chinatown, which is here, just click it…
And then, click this Visit button.
Now the tour is modified to visit Yokohama Chinatown.
Similarly, if you don’t want to visit this museum, just click this…
And then click this Avoid button.
Now the tour skips the museum.
In addition, you can change your tour condition.
At this moment, the tour day is not specified, but let me change it to…
Monday, like this.
Then the tour plan is radically changed, because on Monday, many museums are closed.
Similarly, let me change this “reluctance to walk” from slightly to no.
Then, the tour becomes longer, because I don’t mind long walking.
Finally, when you are satisfied with this plan, click this PRINT button.
Now, you see the detail of tour plan.
In other words, you can get the image of where you walk on this tour very clearly.
Now, you can get the handout and bring it to your destination.
Now, in the next part, let me explain the design concepts of CT-Planner.
First of all, we emphasized interactiveness.
We skip the review, which is discussed in the proceeding, but in many of the previous tour recommenders, the user has to provide their requests as much as possible, before seeing an actual plan.
On the other hand, our system first shows the sample plan
And based on the sample plan, people add the request in a stepwise manner and the system revises the plan gradually.
By repeating this interactive cycle, the user gets aware of their their hidden requests.
Another feature is that CT-Planner supports two levels of user requests.
The first one is direct requests, like where the user want to visit or where the user doesn’t want to visit.
The second is indirect requests, I mean, the character the tour.
For the well-known POIs, you can request by them by these buttons, and for others, you can make the system to select, depending on these settings.
But you know, it is not easy to make these settings manually.
So, CT-Planner first asks your favorite travel style, from which the default value of these settings are determined.
The third feature is easy data creation.
We prepared an excel-based editor, like this.
All you have to do is to fill up this table.
Then, the system automatically generates the routes between all combinations of POIs.
We made such an easy tool, because in future, we are planning to ask volunteers to make the data of their locals and to expand the coverage of CT-Planner rapidly.
Fourth feature is that CT-Planner is designed to support foreigners visiting Japan.
Japan-beginners are often worried about transportation and language barrier in Japan.
So, it will be nice if they can consult on their trip via web, I mean, from their home country, at any time they want, using their mother language.
And we hope that, once they get a concrete image of their own trip, they get more interested in visiting Japan.
This is why we started CT-Planner’s online service for Internationals.
But the question is, do they welcome our tool ? or not.
So, it comes to the part of evaluation..
We conducted two tests.
The first one targets the people who are already in a destination.
And the second one targets the people who are in their home country.
We recruited 16 international students for the first test, and 56 monitors of an international survey company for the second one.
This is overall evaluation.
This is the answers by on-destination users and this is by off-destination users.
The left side is negative, and the right side is positive.
This shows that our CT-Planner is positively evaluated.
Especially, its easiness to use is highly evaluated.
This item is also highly evaluated.
This means, CT-planner has high serendipity, the ability to help people find something new.
This shows the comparison between people’s usual planning and CT-Planner.
People say CT-Planner is very nice to save time for making plan.
But unfortunately, as for plan’s quality, their seems still room for improvement.
This shows the situations when people want to use our tool.
Actually, not only at home, but also at hotel, transportation, or hotel, test users wanted to use it.
Interestingly, many off-destination users wanted to use it while strolling, but not so much for on-destination users.
This is probably because they notice, once they start traveling, they don’t have to rely on the tool for rescheduling.
An interesting finding.
We asked on-destination users to bring a GPS logger, and compared the original plan and the actual route.
Then, we found that some people didn’t exactly follow the recommended plan, especially at the end of their trip.
They said, “I can deviate from my original plan, because I’ve learnt what are interesting there, thanks to this tool”
This means that CT-Planner has a potential to serve as a Learning Tool.
So, that’ the result of our user test.
Now, at the end of this presentation, I’d like to talk about our secret future goal.
Our secret goal is to collect user log, as much as possible.
Why?
To know which plans or spots are favored by whom.
For instance, this is the popular POIs by our test user.
We notice that Yokohama Chinatown is popular for international students, but not foreigners.
In the same way, we can look at which POIs are popular for Asians, Europeans, Americans, and so on.
And an attractive point is that we can get such data much cheaply than conducting a questionnaire or GPS-assisted survey.
Actually, it’s almost free.
And this is our future vision
We provide planning support to relatively advanced tourists, and get log data from them.
From this data, we can make statics about tourists’ needs and trends and provide it to tour companies and DMOs.
With such statistics, they can make more attractive tours or provide more attractive information to ordinary tourists…and maybe, they can get more money.
As a reward, we will ask them to provide more up-to-date destination data.
If this cycle really works, we can serve not only advanced tourists, but also ordinary tourists indirectly.
This is our future dream.
Now this is our conclusion.
In this presentation, we reported the latest version of our computer-aided tour planner CT-Planner4.
Its feature is interactive interfac, supporting both direct and indirect requests, easy data creation for asking volunteers.
And its practicality is substantiated by the result of our user tests and expert interview, which is reported in the proceeding.
Finally, we suggested that the user log of computer-aided tour planner, like ours, will be useful for marketing analysis.
Well, that’s all my presentation.
Thank you very much for listening.
