2. Why this component
• AMR a big concern for livestock production and public health
• Recognized as a priority in Uganda  NAP for AMR
• Antibiotics the most commonly used vet drug by farmers in
Uganda (32%)
• Tetracyclines, Aminoglycocides and Sulphonamides account
>90%
• 38% of farmers reporting drug failure
• Use of formulations for humans
• Use of antimicrobials in poultry production is common, largely
unregulated
• Need to develop interventions and incentive to ensure rational
use

3. What we want to achieve
1. Understand knowledge, attitude, practices, and incentives for AMU in
poultry value chains in Uganda, and the role of formal and informal
markets
2. Assess risks to humans from poultry-associated AMR: Research on AMR
transmission risks at the human-animal-environmental interface in
different poultry production systems (smallholder and commercial; rural
and peri-urban) in Uganda
3. Design and evaluate interventions to reduce AMU in poultry value chains
in Uganda
4. Support evidence-based policy dialogue for antimicrobial surveillance
and AMR strategies
5. Build capacity in value chain actors, implementers, researchers

4. Outcomes
- Poultry sector relevant elements of the NAP implemented taking
into account new emerging evidence
- Value chain actors adopt strategies for rational use of
antimicrobials (change in KAP)
- Improved diagnostic and research capacity for AMR surveillance
and monitoring (system in place to monitor AMR in poultry,
improved data coming from labs)
- AMR related risks for value chain actors are managed
- Long-term collaboration of German and Ugandan partners
established (follow-up projects/interactions defined)

5. Who will benefit
Beneficiaries:
Value chain actors involved in production: farmers, farm workers, input
suppliers, traders
MAAIF: support to AMR NAP
Wider community (consumers) through safer poultry meat

6. What we will do
Literature review on AMR and AMU in the poultry sector in Uganda
Conduct studies to understand AM use
Map possible AMR transmission pathways within the poultry production
systems to identify risk pathways for human exposure
Conduct AMR and residue prevalence surveys and in-depth AMR transmission
studies
Design interventions (co-design with poultry producers), and closely monitor
their implementation over time to understand incentives to motivate change
Organise multi-stakeholder workshops to discuss feasibility, challenges, and
constraints in implementing NAP in poultry sector, involve representatives
from other countries -> Support continued review of national action plan
Develop capacity development plan for different stakeholder groups
