KAZNET: Towards creating livestock market information efficiency through technology

  1. 1. Contact Persons Rupsha Banerjee: B.Rupsha@cgiar.org Francesco Fava: f.fava@cgiar.org Nathan Jensen: n.jensen@cgiar.org Motivation Information scarcity is severely limiting the development and resource management of the drylands. Challenges  Lack of credible information has constrained governments and the development sector in their support to the livestock sector.  Several attempts to collect market information through conventional methods have faced data quality and sustainability challenges. Features  Tasks are developed on the backend with parameters on when and where the data can be collected, and the reward for doing so.  A mobile application provides contributors with a menu of available tasks, their parameters, and the reward for successful submissions.  Collecting data does not require cellular coverage and all submissions are time and data stamped.  Tasks are approved automatically or manually by the administrator using the web-based application.  Contributors are paid frequently for their successful contributions. Achievements  Pilot: May - October 2017 in six markets – Moyale, Merille, Lolkuniani, Oldonyiro, Isiolo.  Observations: Total of 135 market – days observed.  Task Types: Livestock market operation status, livestock price & quality, volume of livestock trade, milk prices, and prices of essential food commodities.  Tasks: 16,910 submitted, 90,606 questions on livestock markets, milk, and other commodities.  Contributors: 37 including members of the Livestock Marketing Associations and County Government officials.  Technical Working Group: Stakeholders workshop led to the formation of the Technical Working Group led by the State Department of Livestock. Key Lessons Learned  Crowdsourcing livestock market information is possible and improves data quality at a relatively low cost.  Significant number of smartphone users who can crowdsource data in the drylands.  Strong demand of broader range of information besides market information that is beneficial to the livestock value chain. E.g. water and pasture availability, security, disease outbreaks. Opportunities  Leverage transformational technologies and growing access to mobile networks.  Develop a data collection, verification and dissemination platform for information related to pastoral production systems. ̶ KAZNET Platform: Mobile application for crowdsourcing data using flexible and dynamically generated tasks ̶ Way Forward  Sustainability: A demand-driven business strategy for both data collection and dissemination.  Functionality: Continue to improve KAZNET capabilities and user experience.  Standardization: Data collection protocols, incentive structures, quality verification.  Scale and Diversity: Broaden the use-cases and extend our network of contributors.
