Introduction to Technology for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) and the livestock compact (Poultry)
1. Introduction to TAAT and the livestock compact
(Poultry)
Iddo Dror, Program Leader, Impact at Scale - ILRI
TAAT Poultry Value Chain Inception Meeting, ILRI Addis, 21 June 2018
2. TAAT and Feed Africa
TAAT is part of AfDB’s “Feed Africa”
Strategy, which aims to achieve major
agricultural transformation:
150m people adequately fed / 100m
people lifted out of poverty / 190m
hectares with restored productivity
TAAT supports Feed Africa by providing
needed, proven agricultural
technologies and implementation
strategies for inclusion within AfDB's
loans to Regional Member Countries.

5. Funding overview
• Relatively small central funds (grant), with much larger country
program (loan) operations.
• Central funds spread across 9 compacts and 6 enablers,
operating across 27 countries
• Central funds meant as ‘showcase’ to catalyze investments, and
link to actors whose activities are aligned
6. Livestock Compact - Overview
• Poultry and Small Ruminants
Value Chains (with several sub-
components in each)
• Focus countries include
Ethiopia, Mali, Nigeria, with
country operation support in a
few other countries
• Focus on scaling proven
technologies – not a research
program
7. Livestock Compact – key activities
(poultry)
• Advise regulatory authorities on implementation of
enabling regulations for poultry
• Establish synergy between the compact and other
initiatives such as the ACGG initiative
• Network actors to create opportunities in the poultry
sector for youth/woman led agribusinesses (business
incubators)
• Upscaling of productive & adaptive chicken (genetically
improved, brooded and vaccinated)
8. Expectations
• We’re here to unleash the
‘Regional Technology Delivery
Infrastructure’ for poultry in
Ethiopia
• Looking for ‘quick wins’, scaling
results in 2018
• Explore how best to do this
together – in all regions of
Ethiopia, and beyond in other
countries in the region.
