TUBERCULOSIS
Tuberculosis is a serious disease that affects animals and humans.
It is caused by a germ (bacteria) called Mycobacterium. Some germs
affect only humans, but others affect both animals and humans.
Infected humans can show:
• Fever
• Coughing
• Night sweat
• Loss of appetite
• Weight loss
• Abdominal pain
• Diarrhea
Infected animals can show:
• Thin bodies
• Weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Pneumonia with cough
• Lymph nodes may be enlarged

How to behave if you suspect your animals are infected
• Treating of animals suffering from tuberculosis IS NOT A GOOD IDEA
• Consult an animal health expert in your area.
• The BEST option is sending the animals for slaughter
• Separate the suspected animal from the rest of the animals in your herd
How to avoid becoming infected with tuberculosis from your animals
• COOK you meat well before eating
• BOIL your milk before drinking and before preparing yoghurt and other products
• Don’t get in close contact with infected animals or their meat
• Always wash and disinfect hands after working with animals or animal products

How humans get the disease
Human can get tuberculosis from people or animals with tuberculosis:
• Drinking raw (not boiled) or contaminated milk and milk products
• Eating raw (uncooked) meat from animals with tuberculosis
• Touching infected animals and their bodies during slaughter
• Inhaling (breathing) the bacteria from infected animal
• Infected human can transmit tuberculosis to a healthy human through
cough and sneeze.
