SSI UK – Redcar Mechanical Fitter
I worked as part of a multi-disciplined shift engineering team consisting of:
• Mechanical fitters • Electricians • Fabricators • Instrument technicians
Our aim was to achieve optimal casting conditions and ensure the Casting machines, Tundish Driers,
OHC and the water treatment plant has technical support across the full facility. This involved
maintenance, repair, adjustment of plant and auxiliary equipment. Including fault finding, isolation,
leasing with other skills, de-isolation and commissioning of equipment.
I also do full machine count downs to prove all operating systems using SCADA, adjustment of
hydraulic and water pressure/flow set points for optimal conditions and ensure all services are available
prior to casting and monitor the process for the full duration of cast/operation to identify as early as
possible any arising faults.
2. Day to day tasks included Using visual inspection and precision instruments to aid troubleshooting and
correction of mechanical faults by repair, assembly and replacement of defective components. Such as
bearings, gaskets, pumps, gearboxes, rolls etc.
Fault finding on various heavy industrial systems, using engineering drawings, and work on equipment
• Hydraulics • Pneumatics • Winch systems
• Lubrication systems • Coke Oven Gas Preheaters • Argon feed and distribution
• Ladle cars • Tundish cars • Deskullers
• Casting machines • Electric overhead cranes
• Fine calibration and adjustment of WAM Moulds
• Closed and open cooling water distribution systems
• Automated Oxygen/Propane Cutting machines
TATA – Skininngrove Mechanical Team Member
This encompassed maintenance, repair and operation of machinery producing special profiles,
including using computer to read and input data specific to orders. Operate stacker, bundler. Repair,
adjust and maintain stacker, bundler and rolls, dolly’s that feed special profiles in to machine. Using
take 2s, risk assessment and lock systems before entering and working on equipment.
CORUS – Lackenby Mechanical Team Member
Duties encompassed supervision, maintenance, repair and production to create a quality slab. The
production duties involved working in dangerous areas such as molten steel, where reactions to
changing conditions needed to be executed quickly, measured, and with safe action in order to save
machine and personnel from injury or death. Also some senior man duties in a control room and
operating a cutter/marker machine involving extracting and inputting data for finished Slab distribution.
Turning machine around in a quick, safe method.
