Sky Caves, learning technology apprentice, Basingstoke College of Technology

The digital team at Basingstoke College of Technology has just finished its first year of helping every course create one hour of timetabled blended learning as part of the curriculum for all students.

In this session two of the team will share some the most impactful, meaningful, and innovative ways in which digital pedagogy has developed students employability and enhanced their subject knowledge. Participants will share what creative projects they want to get going in 2017/18 and will connect with like-minded educators to either share with or start a collaboration with another institution.

  7. 7. Engaged and open minded citizens Collegiality - social environment promoting cooperation and trust Variety of perspectives and expertise Collective, long - term solutions Collaboration = good citizens
  8. 8. “Listen carefully, think critically, participate constructively, collaborate productively.” (Barkley, Cross & Major, 2005) connectmore17#
  9. 9. twitter
  10. 10. By having a hashtag debate/ question you can capture evidence from all the students that can then lead into Socratic and Cascaded questions in the room. Students can use it to demonstrate digital literacy, communication skills, while providing you with an opportunity for peer review of spelling and syntax.
  11. 11. Live-streaming
  12. 12. Place your screenshot here
  13. 13. Broadcast live video from your phone or tablet - great for debates/ advertising your course Periscope tweets a link that people can view live or replay later Develops the students digital literacy, critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills
  14. 14. The more confident/ vocal learners often choose to articulate their response on camera to their American cousins... ...the less confident/ vocal students can take to twitter to craft their response/ favourite/ retweet/ respond to others.
  15. 15. snapchat
  16. 16. What was most interesting was the collaborative peer review and commenting on the work which then lead to consolidation and testing of knowledge amongst the auto students watching Auto students bradley and saif working together to document their process and progress...
  17. 17. Linked in
  18. 18. Students work hard to earn endorsement of their skills from their peers Recommendations are written by me for the best performances which appear on their profile It can be used it as an online CV/ calling card for Employers and Universities Networking with professionals and honing the profile becomes a point of pride
  19. 19. bingo!
  20. 20. instagram
  21. 21. Students photograph their work to evidence their process and annotate the pictures with text to encourage peer reflection and collaborative evaluation at each stage of a project.
  22. 22. Place your screenshot here
  23. 23. G SUITE (formerly google apps)
  24. 24. This is a great instant messaging/ video app that allows you and your students to stay in touch/ collaborate with one another or in group work
  25. 25. All of our Students use their g suite account to access coursework via the app or the browser The intuitive social media style aesthetic has engaged the learners and served us well in 16/17 in both ‘Blended learning’ and traditional lectures. All learners can access their work on the go on any device and communicate with staff/ peers through their account
  26. 26. Students can collaborate on lecture notes as a Google Doc
  27. 27. Comic strips (photos, Google Drawings, and Google Slides) Students can take photos and add them to a Google Drawing, add speech bubbles, then save those images and add each one to a different slide in a Google Slides presentation to collaborate on their story.
  28. 28. bingo!
  29. 29. Youtube
  30. 30. Students can collaborate to Create playlists of inspiring, brilliant + educational videos Haven't got time? Your students can do it
  31. 31. Can be used for recorded screencasts of Assignment Briefs to help learners understand expectations and Revisit my instruction. ‘what do I have to do?’ learners revisit and have shown higher comprehension skills as a result of this - also, i don’t have to repeat myself
  32. 32. Screen-casted lectures can be used as a revision/ consolidation tool as well as being good for students who need more opportunities to engage with the learning As good as existing 3rd party videos are - we have found that students engage more when it is their teacher addressing them in a personal, esoteric, and immediate manner
  33. 33. facebook
  34. 34. Groups are great for consolidating/ expanding lectures Learners caN add comments or private message their peers once they have been rounded up into a group and can use it to gather research, manage projects, and keep one another informed of deadlines whilst print-screening said evidence for their assessments.
  35. 35. The amount of Industry contacts/ mentors/ sponsors that you can make on social media is invaluable
  36. 36. Students work together on these platforms every day to discover, learn, watch, share, and engage with their world through social media. To not use this opportunity is to miss out on a chance to developing them as professionals
  37. 37. it's really nice to see people in the student debate group acknowledging things they're sharing as bias eg 'I know this is a far right post' . it's something which I've noticed happening increasingly often compared to when it started - not even just from media students - and really reflects the impact the group has had on critical media consumption.
  38. 38. using these tools can help us to make sure learning is always there, on demand, to feed their intellectual curiosity and help them PIECE TOGETHER INFORMATION AND create NEW IDEAS. Our sTUDENTS are foragers, synthesisers, and alchemists, gathering and consuming KNOWLEDGE FROM DIVERSE SOURCES to help them learn and understand their environmenT. they USE what is available to them TO collaborate, GROW, TO discover, TO plaY, AND TO LEARN. SO SHOULD WE.
  39. 39. Activity Please make a pledge to try at least one method of collaboration to help your students or institution in 17/18 Feel free to go and chat with one another
  40. 40. Collaboration is key, get in contact: Thank you.

Notas del editor

  • Brief introduction, who are we, what do we do, our journey (keep short)
What is collaboration? Make this interesting, make people think about it in a way they haven’t before, don’t just define it
  • To add:

Breakdown of different types of collab (eg. staff to staff, student to student) - checklist of what makes effective collaboration eg. what’s the use, who does it benefit, bettering practice by sharing idea, lifelong learning, collaboration=democracy

Collaboration is important for future jobs, hybrid roles
Quotes about importance eg future skills required

Examples of how we collaborate as a team eg Docs with comments + assign, Triciders, Hangouts, Classroom (our team, Learning Support)

    Collaboration mindset

Examples of blended collaboration, not just pure tech, eg NFC tag ideas, team meetings are both, MyMaps by Public Services, Videos by Sports,
  • Instagram’s video feature offers a chance to document mini-vlogs on their work as well in teams or individually
We have found that the opportunity to photograph incremental evidence of a project serves as a great portfolio/ reflection tool

  • Change to G Suite? All combined
  • JD
  • Collaborated on Slides, presentations, docs, keep. Comic strips
  • JD
  • Students ask questions they may be too embarrassed about asking their Lecturers in front of their classmates on Facebook.
They can see key information about the course, share interesting links and engage with materials from the Lecturer they are more likely to expand and consolidate learning outside of the class.

  • Ideas/ features:

Live count of world population on screen - this is how many people there are in the world RIGHT now (mention forecasted rises) who you/ your students could be collaborating on. Every single one of these people have a different skill set, different life experiences and outlooks to bring to the table. (Maybe poignant note to end on)
