FURNITURE
DESIGN
The dinning chair was mainly inspired by the South African African cultures and the disadvantages brought on before during
Apartheid. The dinning chair represents the idea of various cultures, in the form of segments, where they have now come
together as one as an entire nation. The idea of grouping was inspired by the hexagonal shape where the shape can be
grouped together in order to for a community,
The dinning chair, in the form of a hexagon can go from a formal environment to an informal environment by grouping the
chairs together in order to form a lounger. The hexagon shape also allows for the user to comfortably relax their arms
on the wider areas of the dinning chair, the points of the hexagon, therefore banishing the idea of arm rests on the dinning
chair which can be uncomfortable at times. In conclusion to the shape of the dinning chair, the chair can go from a formal
environment, inside, to an semi formal environment to an informal environment, outside.Where both the wood and the
upholstery is able to sustain the weather conditions.
Variety of South African is implemented through the layers in the plywood which represent the variety seen within South
African from the cultures, to the wildlife and to the vegetation.Variety is also implemented through the various concave
curves into the wooden slats to comfortably hold the user where the high density upholstered cushions further form the
body of the user when in the seating position.
The wood in the dinning chair relates back to the wood forestries in South Africa where theTraditional Shweshwe material
used in the upholstery of the chair relates back to theTraditional African cultures. The idea of the upholstery being loose is
based on the user, where he/she can decide on the type of pattern and colour according to their decor as well as make the
upholstery easily changeable or the user can decide to use the chair with or without upholstery. The idea of the upholstery
loose from the rest of the chair is inspired by the rest of the flatpack idea where every part on the chair can be removed
and taken apart, therefore making the upholstery easily to clean and change by removing the cushions cover off of the high
density foam. Not only for the upholstery, there is also a footrest support where the user can determine for themselves if
they would like to use the support as a footrest, if not the user can easily swop the support to the top grooves just under
the seating area therefore allowing freedom with the users feet when the chair is in use.
