The following piece was written for Elmhurst BMW to commemorate the 40th
anniversary of the official establishment of BMW operations in North America. To show
that BMW’s roots in the United States actually go back much further, I delved into how
famed premium auto dealer Max Hoffman introduced the American public to the brand
as early as the 1950s. Though AIM illustrated the piece with an image of modern BMW
models, I highlighted the development of the BMW 2002 to emphasize that the
company established the compact executive car class in North America. The piece can
be viewed here on the client’s website.
BMW North America Celebrates 40 Years
BY BMWADMIN· OCTOBER 21,2015
October marks the 40th anniversary of BMW’s official entry into the North American
market, however the history of split kidney-grilled “Bimmers” goes back a bit earlier in
the U.S. than the official introduction of the BMW 3 Series E 21 in 1975 for the 1976
model year. While the “Dreier” certainly made its mark in the nascent executive compact
car market and convinced a generation of upmarket drivers to embrace the significantly
more powerful BMW 3 Series E30 in the 1980s, it actually built upon a small core of
aficionados who had been collecting Bavarian Motor Works vehicles since they were
first imported to the U.S. by famed dealer Max Hoffman in 1954.
Born in Austria in 1904, Hoffman later migrated to the United States and, by the 1950s,
had established an influential auto import business that was based in New York City.
Though he happily fulfilled orders for European cars that were already in demand
among prosperous post-war Americans, Hoffman quickly gained a reputation for
suggesting rarer types to discerning clients and taking the risks that are associated with
introducing unfamiliar brands through an independently-run dealership network. Among
a number of both rare and now commonplace marques, he decided to import his first
BMWs in 1954 and, as the decade went on, actually had a hand in suggesting some of
the design features that were incorporated into the stunning BMW 507.
It wasn’t until the BMW “New Class” appeared in 1962 that this part of his portfolio
began to make a true profit, however. Beginning with the BMW 1500, this family of
vehicles was powered by front-mounted M10 Straight-4 engines, had unitary
construction, fully independent suspension with MacPherson struts in front and semi-
trailing arms in the rear, and front disc brakes. By the late 1960s they had evolved,
partially at the suggestion of Hoffman, into the more robust, sporty BMW 2002.
Featuring a 1,900 cc engine that was sold with either a base single carburetor or a high
performance, high compression dual-carburetor, it was this model that was famously
reviewed by auto writer David E. Davis Jr. in a 1968 Car and Driver article entitled “Turn
Your Hymnals To 2002”.
In retrospect, it’s easy to see why the 2002 made such a splash in the industry press of
the time. While European cars had made their way into the American consciousness as
early as the 1950s, they were mostly in the form of British roadsters that, while attractive
and offering great handling, were woefully underpowered. Italian firms had managed to
sell a few select high performance models among upmarket buyers by the 1960s,
however these cars were considered difficult to maintain and closer to show pieces than
true driver’s vehicles. On the domestic front, of course, Detroit was at a zenith that was
marked by a wide field of incredibly powerful muscle cars, however while those vehicles
exuded horsepower and had iconic styling, they were built for going fast and straight
over quarter mile stretches and, with one or two exceptions, had limited handling. The
market for performance vehicles, simply put, was constrained both in terms of
categories and capability.
The BMW 2002 that premiered in 1968, on the other hand, had a power to weight ratio
that, while it did not produce a top speed that approached the muscle and dedicated
race cars of the day, afforded impressive acceleration, especially on curves. Its compact
body, suspension, and wheelbase dimensions also meant that it was highly
maneuverable, and it wasn’t long before the 2002 and its variants were found in racing
circuits around the world.
The BMW 2002’s impact on the U.S. market wasn’t entirely due to performance,
however. As one of the few compact executive sedans on the market, it filled a growing
niche, as businessmen across the country realized that it was ideal for driving and
parking in increasingly congested urban environments. In keeping with the already
formidable mechanical reputation of Bavarian Motor Works, it was also reliable.
The retirement of the 2002 coincided with Hoffman’s decision to sell his distribution
rights back to BMW in 1975, thus creating BMW North America. While the BMW 3
Series E21 initially had its detractors due to engine choices that were limited to the M10
I-4, the introduction of the more powerful M20 six-cylinders enabled the E21 to rebound
and set the stage for the success of the BMW 3 Series E30 in the 1980s. Though
Hoffman passed away in 1981, his wife soon established a charitable foundation in his
name that, even today, carries on his legacy through philanthropic donations to groups
that are involved in education, the arts, and medicine.
The legacy established by Max Hoffman and the engineers who created the likes of the
BMW 2002 and BMW 3 Series E30 also lives on for drivers, as the current model lineup
for BMW includes a number of autos, such as the 2016 BMW Z4 sDrive35i and 2016
BMW 6 Series 650i, that embody performance, luxury, and sound design. Vehicles like
the 2016 BMW X3 xDrive28i even give consumers cargo and passenger-carrying
capabilities that would have been unheard of back in Hoffman’s time. To become a part
of this heritage, call Elmhurst BMW at (844) 671-0006 or visit our showroom at 466
West Lake Street in Elmhurst to learn more about this year’s BMWs or schedule a test
drive. We’re confident you’ll conclude, as was true in the era of the BMW 2002, that
BMWs are still the ultimate driving machines.

This ‘teaser’ alerts car enthusiasts to the possibility that the BMW-Toyota partnership
might lead to a new sports car, however it also uses the overall excitement generated
by the FT-1 concept car’s design to introduce drivers to a number of innovations Toyota
is working on, including vehicles that use hydrogen fuel cells as a source of electricity.
While any future BMW-Toyota collaboration may not be an HEV and the FT-1 itself may
have a conventional piston engine if it ever goes to production, the piece concludes by
introducing consumers to the innovative powertrains that can be found at the client’s
location. Though this press release/blog can be found here, it has already been posted
posted on the client’s site more than once.
Speed, a Revolutionary Power Source, or Both: The
Fruits of The Recent Toyota-BMW Partnership
Expected To Be Announced This Year
BY ADMIN · SEPTEMBER19,2015
Toyota and BMW startled the industry and launched the speculation of auto enthusiasts
into high gear when they announced a partnership to develop hydrogen fuel cell cars
and lightweight materials in 2012, however it is the mystery of the third part of this deal,
Page 6 of 29
the option of creating an entirely new sports car platform, that tantalized performance
aficionados the most. Though no clear and concrete statements have been made to the
press about the status of this top secret project, we can now report that a decision on
whether the Toyota-BMW sports car project will proceed is expected to be revealed by
the end of the year.
Though nothing official has been cleared for release regarding the car’s performance
capabilities, styling, or powertrain, there are already enough clues out in the open to
give Toyota drivers a sense of what may be to come. The new Toyota FT-1 concept
car, which was personally pitched to Toyota president Akio Toyoda by Toyota’s Calty
Design Research studio, wowed sports car enthusiasts at the 2014 Detroit Auto
Show. Featuring classic sport car proportions that set the driver behind a long hood
that tapers into an aggressive, shark-like fascia, the FT-1 drew Toyoda’s praise for
meeting his request that new cars reflect a “I want this… I HAVE to drive this”
appeal. Its flowing body style, which has been described by head designer Alex Chen
as reflecting a “Function Sculpting” philosophy, was noted for looking unified and
consistent from all angles, resulting in a body that is attractive whether it’s coming or
going.
Though it’s possible that the FT-1 will enter direct production, there’s also a likelihood
that the new sports car will either be a redesigned Supra that incorporates FT-1 design
cues or a total replacement for the Supra that is based on an admixture of the FT-1 and
a BMW powertrain. This platform could be launched concordantly with the expected
replacement for the BMW Z4. Since the Z4 successor is expected to use the twin-
turbocharged inline six that’s found on the latest BMW M3s and M4s, it’s not beyond the
realm of possibility that the Toyota-BMW sports car could mate the striking body of the
Toyota FT-1 with the power of the BMW twin-turbocharged inline six. The result would
clearly be a performance car that has the responsiveness and speed to match its
beauty.
There are, of course, other somewhat more surprising possibilities. The Toyota-BMW
partnership has already influenced the design of the 2016 Toyota Mirai, which uses a
hydrogen fuel cell to power an electric motor. As with all fuel cell designs, the Mirai
FCV mixes hydrogen that has been stored in a highly secure and safe fuel tank with
oxygen that has been filtered through the car’s front grille. The reaction produces
electricity that is used to power the Mirai’s motor and no emissions other than harmless
water vapor. Altogether, the fuel cell system on the 2016 Toyota Mirai emits zero
carbon-based chemicals and has a range of over 300 miles. Given that the average
American has a daily round-trip commute of 34 miles and the hydrogen fuel tanks only
take ten minutes to fill, this means that the Mirai is both a practical and environmentally
friendly vehicle.
Is it, well, possible that the new Toyota-BMW sports car will utilize a hydrogen fuel cell-
electric powertrain like that used on the 2016 Toyota Mirai?
That possibility may seem far off, but there’s growing demand for performance cars that
use alternative fuel and engineering systems. BMW has also demonstrated HFC
technology on its i8 and 5 Series Gran Turismo. While the greater likelihood is that the
new sports car, if it is approved, will use a conventional engine, the expansion of
hydrogen fuel stations outside of California, which Toyota is helping to subsidize, makes
this a possibility.
Chicago area drivers do not have to wait for either a performance or fuel efficient
vehicle, however, as the 2016 Toyota Corolla is sold at Elmhurst Toyota, which have an
MSRP of $17,230, achieve up to 37 MPG highway, while the 2016 Toyota Camry, which
starts at an MSRP of $23,070 and has an available 268hp, 3.5L V-6, reaches up to 35
MPG on the highway. For more information on these and other vehicles, contact our
sales professionals at 630-279-2160. To find out more about the possible Toyota-BMW
sports car, continue to visit our website for any updates. The wait, after all, is likely to
be worth it.

Though the beauty of the vehicle featured in this piece was more than enough to write
about, my goal was to introduce and explain rotary engine technology to the client’s
customers, as they may be offered similar powertrains in the future, and to evoke
nostalgia among Mazda’s dedicated racing fans by tying the new concept to the brand’s
previous rotary-powered performance vehicle.
Mazda Racing Heritage Lives On
BY AIM-ROSENMAZDA· NOVEMBER 24, 2015
A low, sleek body that’s defined by smooth, clutter-free side panels and a long hood that
takes a dramatic dive into a puckish fascia is what put the new Mazda RX-Vision
Concept on the front of everyone’s mind at this year’s Tokyo Auto Show — however it’s
the sport coupe’s powerplant that has kept insiders talking about it. This is because, as
revealed by Kiyoshi Fujiwara, General Manager of Mazda’s Powertrain Development
Division, the RX-Vision draws its horses from an all-new Wankel rotary engine dubbed
the SkyActiv-R.
Able to rapidly generate high revolutions per minute and characterized by a high power-
to-weight ratio, smoothness, and simplicity of maintenance, Wankel rotary motors are
ideal for both competition race cars and consumer performance vehicles of all types,
especially sports coupes and roadsters. Unlike conventional gas-powered engines,
which use reciprocating pistons to generate power by turning a crankshaft, Wankel
motors consist of symmetrical, triangular rotors with gently curved sides that are
contained within a nearly oval housing, with the four strokes of the Otto cycle occurring
in the space between the rotor and the inside of the housing. This causes the rotor to
turn about an eccentric shaft that functions as a drive shaft, transferring rotational
motion out toward the drivetrain. Since the intake, compression, ignition, and exhaust
stages occur simultaneously on the Wankel and all of its parts move in the same
direction, its layout permits unhindered, rapid ‘spooling’ up into high RPMs without any
of the violent changes in direction that characterize the action of a conventional piston
engine. Since they generate a power output that is equivalent to a piston engine that is
three times the size, the performance profile of a Wankel rotary is therefore ideal for any
light vehicle that must routinely operate at high RPM, as is the case with sport
motorbikes and cars.
Historically, Wankel rotary motors have not been without their challenges, however, as
the engine layout lends itself to uneven heating of both the rotor and housing, though
ceramic coatings can mitigate this issue. Previous incarnations have also been known
for poor fuel economy and high emissions, as the shape of older combustion chambers
led to unburnt fuel in the exhaust. Fujiwara has stated that these issues have been
resolved in the motor that was installed in the RX-Vision Concept through a combination
of computer modeling and control as well other advances, though, and the new motor is
expected to have fuel consumption and emission levels that are on par with other
engines in its power class.
While the performance specs for the Mazda SkyActiv-R rotary engine have not been
released, Fujiwara noted, “If we were to mass produce the car, the [Porsche] Cayman is
the right kind of assumption [as a rival]. We’d like to make it lighter than a
Cayman.” Given that the Cayman was directly referenced and that the RX-Vision
Concept has similar dimensions to the Jaguar F-Type, it’s reasonable to conclude that
production versions of the SkyActive-R Wankel rotary may approach 380 to 385 hp.
Fujiwara also stated that hybridization and turbocharging were being considered,
however both forms of augmentation would take away from two of the selling points of
Wankel rotary engines, which are ease of manufacture and simplicity. He did state,
Page 11 of 29
however, that work on perfecting the motor would continue until a production version of
the RX-Vision Concept, which may be badged as the next RX-7 or RX-9, was released.
“Based on the things we’ve been studying, there is still room for more modifications”, he
said.
For fans of Mazda, especially Mazda’s racing heritage, the revelation that a new Wankel
rotary design had been installed in a concept car that is likely to be used as the basis for
a production vehicle has been cause for both celebration and a drive through the best
parts of memory lane. This is because, though the first examples were patented in
1929 by Felix Wankel and assembled by German firm NSU Motorenwerke AG in the
1950s, Mazda became the most visible promoter of the design after they signed a
development contract with NSU in 1961. While NSU had a slight lead time advantage,
the Mazda rotaries soon became the more popular choice, as the Hiroshima-based
company quickly solved an apex seal issue that had plagued earlier models and, by
1967, had fielded their first Wankel rotary-powered car, the Cosmo 110S.
Wankel rotaries became standard fare in Mazda sports cars during the years that
followed. Usually arranged in double rotor designs, though a twin-turbo three-rotor
engine was fitted in the 1991 Eunos Cosmo, these units were known for being able to
achieve high RPM and speed, though rising fuel prices gradually reduced their
consumer use after 1970. The final rotary-driven Mazda model, the RX-8, was retired in
2012. In the world of sanctioned competitive racing, however, the Mazda Wankel
rotaries had major successes, as a Mazda 12-A rotary engine-powered Sigma MC74
was the first engine/team from outside the United States or Europe to finish the entire
24 Hours of Le Mans Race in 1974. In 1991, the four-rotor Mazda 787B became the
first — and to this day, only — engine/team from outside the U.S. or Europe to win Le
Mans outright.
While an exact date for the release of a RX-Vision Concept-derived car is not set, many
insiders point to 2017, as that date would mark the 50th anniversary of the Cosmo
110S. Others point to 2020, which would honor the company’s 100th birthday. One
thing that can be certain is that, in one form or another, rotary engines will play a role in
Mazda’s future.
Said Mazda president and CEO Masamichi Kogai, “One day rotary will make a
comeback. This gives form to our brand’s vision of the future. It expresses our intention
to make rotary. There are many issues to overcome but we will continue our efforts.
We’re working steadily. Keep your eyes on Mazda.”
Though the debut of a RX-Vision Concept-derived vehicle is several years in the future,
performance aficionados can nevertheless strap into a world-renowned Mazda sports
car today. One such automobile is the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, which is an open
cockpit, lightweight roadster that exemplifies the philosophy of “Jinba ittai” (‘rider horse
as one body’). With a 155hp SKYACTIV-G 2.0L DOHC 16-valve, 4-cylinder engine that
powers a rear wheel driven, 2332lb unibody, the 2016 MX-5 Miata offers snappy
acceleration, however the agile handling provided by its 4-wheel independent
suspension (double-wishbone in front, multi-link in rear), perfectly balanced 53/47
weight distribution, and taut 90.9” wheelbase are what have made this roadster a
legend. If the MX-5 sounds like a car that can slake your thirst for performance driving,

While this piece is ostensibly designed to advertise the Dodge Charger Pursuit to
municipalities and law enforcement agencies in the client’s target areas, it also bolsters
the entire Charger line by emphasizing that the car’s performance is so exceptional that
it has become the vehicle of choice for highway patrols that routinely engage in high
speed chases.
When Performance Is Mandatory, Law Enforcement
Turns To The Dodge Charger Pursuit
BY ADMIN · OCTOBER14, 2015
For law enforcement, no two patrols are exactly the same. One shift may be quiet and
relatively uneventful, with time mostly spent providing a reassuring presence within a
familiar community, while the next may be occupied responding to accidents in blizzard
conditions, traversing unpaved roads during a missing persons search, or, when what a
law enforcement officer drives really does matter, in hot pursuit of a dangerous
suspect. Fortunately for the law — and unfortunately for criminals — Dodge builds a
car that can handle any challenge that may be encountered while on patrol: The Dodge
Charger Pursuit.
The reason why the new Dodge Charger Pursuit has become America’s top selling
police sedan is precisely because it can effectively respond to any challenge it’s driven
into. As a full-bodied sedan, it has the size and strength needed to perform dangerous
pit maneuvers, transport suspects, and easily brush aside inclement weather, while it’s
not so large that it can’t be navigated with confidence through winding alleys, congested
traffic, or road hazards. The heart of the Dodge Charger Pursuit’s strength as a law
enforcement vehicle is plainly stated in its name, however, as the power generated by
its 292hp 3.6L Pentastar V-6 or 370hp 5.7L HEMI® V-8 and the handling advantages of
its rear-wheel drive make this thoroughbred muscle car perfect for overtaking and
outmaneuvering fleeing suspects in dangerous situations. The overall capabilities of the
Dodge Charger Pursuit were so great that, in a publicly released report, the Michigan
State Police concluded that it easily outperformed other available police sedans and
had the fastest track speed of all vehicles tested.
Though raw speed and acceleration — 5.7L HEMI® V-8 equipped units can smoothly
accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds — are a major part of the Dodge
Charger Pursuit’s appeal to law enforcement, they’re also major sellers due to reliability
and cost efficiency. While it can attain up to 25 MPG highway when in normal use, the
5.7L HEMI® V-8 also incorporates innovative Fuel Saver Technology that allows four
cylinders to be deactivated during cruise or patrol conditions, making it the ideal engine
choice for state highway patrols that need efficient, yet high performance, vehicles. The
3.6L Pentastar V-6 that is also offered with the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit, on the
other hand, has an E-85 flex fuel capability and spark plugs that are designed for
100,000 miles of use before replacement, making fleet operation something even small
municipalities can afford.
Brute strength alone does not decide the outcome of most emergency situations,
however, as nimble handling can ensure that civilian lives and law enforcement
personnel are not put in unnecessary danger. As with civilian production trims, the
2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit is equipped with either rear wheel drive or optional all
wheel drive, both of which have clear handling advantages over front wheel drive when
paired with a high performance powertrain. Besides the fact that rear wheel drive offers
faster and more responsive acceleration, it also mitigates “weight shift” due to a better
balanced center of gravity, thus increasing maneuverability. Rear wheel drive even
eliminates the so-called “plowing effect” wherein FWD vehicles dig in as they corner at
high speeds, a trait that would obviously put the police at a disadvantage when tracking
a suspect through dense urban areas. Finally, RWD does not generate the “torque
steer” that overworks the wheels on FWD cars, thus enhancing the traction and control
on the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit.
Since modern law enforcement agencies work best when they can access a large pool
of intelligence, Dodge also offers the Uconnect® 5.0 connectivity group, which
incorporates an AM/FM/Bluetooth® Media Hub that includes an SD card reader, USB
port, and auxiliary jack, with the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit. Based on the same
advanced technology found on civilian Dodge Charger trims, Uconnect® allows
integrated Voice Command with Bluetooth as well as Bluetooth streaming audio. The
2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit even comes equipped with an industry-leading 12.1”
integrated touchscreen that can be used to select Uconnect® options, calibrate vehicle
controls, access specialized agency software, or review data that has been retrieved
from SD cards or mobile devices. As with civilian Dodge Charger trims, this ensures
that law enforcement officials always have access to the information they need when
they want it.
Finally, any highway patrolman or police officer will tell you that the best way for a
pursuit to end is for it to never have begun at all. It’s for this reason that Dodge
incorporates the same aggressive and assertive styling that’s found on every new
Dodge Charger in the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit. A recently redesigned fascia that
sports a distinctive crosshair grille and serpentine headlights immediately signals that
the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit embodies the same performance that street legal
variants are known for, while high doors and a full body project authority on the road. In
Page 18 of 29
short, potential high speed pursuit scenarios are thwarted before they begin by the 2015
Dodge Charger Pursuit because suspects know that it simply can’t be beat.
Ultimately, the most interesting thing about the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit is that,
though it has special features like the multi-port Vehicle System Interface Module that
can be used to power and control agency-select items like additional lights and radios,
this high performance law enforcement vehicle shares most of its mechanical and
handling advantages with its civilian stablemates. 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack
and 2015 Dodge Charger SRT® 392 trims are even equipped with a 485hp 6.4L SRT®
HEMI® V-8, while the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT® Hellcat sports an intimidating 707hp
6.2L Supercharged HEMI® V-8 SRT Hellcat engine, meaning that Naperville CJDR
customers actually have more powerful options than the police when it comes to
available Chargers. To learn more about the top tier performance offered by these and
other vehicles, including the 2015 Dodge Challenger and 2015 Chrysler 300C Platinum,
call our sales professionals at 888-584-8379 or drop by Naperville CJDR’s lot at 1565
W. Ogden Avenue in Naperville. We look forward to aiding your pursuit of the hottest
driving experience the American road has to offer.

Though essentially a teaser that also serves to promote the new Jaguar F-PACE, this
piece about leaks that Jaguar had initiated a program to develop an electric crossover
SUV also serves to acclimate consumers to non-gas piston powertrain systems by
emphasizing that technological advances have extended their range.
Is Jaguar About To Turn The New F-PACE Into An
Electric Car?
BY JAGADMIN· NOVEMBER 24, 2015
The all-new Jaguar F-PACE, which is set to go on sale in the U.S. in 2016 as a 2017
model year vehicle, drew rave reviews when it premiered on the German auto show
circuit this fall, however there are already inklings that Jaguar has even bigger plans for
this high performance crossover SUV. While the first generation of F-PACEs will be
sold in the U.S. with either a 380-340hp, 3.0L supercharged V6 or a 180hp, 2.0L
turbocharged four-cylinder Ingenium diesel, company sources have indicated Jaguar
has launched a program to develop an all-electric, plug-in powertrain for the new luxury
vehicle. Though no public launch date has been set, it is expected that the new trim will
be christened the ‘E-PACE’ and have a minimum range of 200 miles, though an upper
limit of 300 miles is also a possibility.
Currently, most plug-in electric vehicles utilize a single permanent magnet electric
traction motor that draws from a lithium-ion battery for propulsion, with current ranges
on entry-level all-electric vehicles spanning from about 75 to 85 miles when in normal
Page 20 of 29
use. The E-PACE, however, is likely to use a more advanced 60-90 kWh Li-Ion battery
that will power electric motors on each axle, creating a complete through-the-road all-
wheel-drive system. Because such a layout does not incorporate a heavy drive axle, it
saves weight, which makes the powertrain system even more efficient and
responsive. Since a similar electric motor-axle arrangement has already been tested on
the Jaguar C-X75 concept car, development is expected to be smooth despite the
revolutionary nature of the technology.
Though it will be based on the same platform as the F-PACE, the E-PACE is also likely
to benefit from the lightweight aluminum architecture that has been jointly developed for
the 2017 F-PACE and 2017 Jaguar XE Sedan. As this new global architecture, which
has been introduced as part of an across-the-board model lineup revision on the part of
Jaguar, retains the strength of a steel body while reducing weight, it’s likely to maintain
most of the upcoming F-PACE’s high-end performance capabilities.
Performance is, of course, part of the F-PACE’s essence, as the new crossover SUV
was designed from the ground up to deliver the same speed and handling capabilities
that are expected of any fine Jaguar vehicle. While the 380hp, 3.0L supercharged V6-
equipped 2017 F-PACE models are capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 5.1
seconds — a stat that easily beats the performance of most sports sedans — the 340hp
V6, 2.0L Ingenium turbo diesel, and 3.0L V6 turbo diesel-powered trims also pack
significant athleticism. The 300hp made available by the 3.0L V6 turbo diesel, which
will only be available in Europe next year, even affords the F-PACE a top speed of
150mph and the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 5.8 seconds, which is almost
unheard of in a vehicle in its class.
Along with the possible introduction of an all-electric powertrain, Jaguar is also looking
into expanding its already planned phase-in of Ingenium diesel engine-equipped trims
across the model line, with the exception of the high performance F-Type, which will be
powered by a 3.0L supercharged V6 in the near future and may be equipped with a
gasoline-powered inline six that can generate up to 500hp after 2017. The Ingenium
family of diesel engines is also likely to serve as the design starting point for any other
new gasoline-powered engines Jaguar fields in upcoming model years. Given that the
current and arriving Jaguar models have relatively large engine compartments, the
company has significant leeway when it comes to selecting powertrain types with its
current and incoming platforms.
While the conventionally-powered F-PACE won’t be sold in the United States until early
2016, driving enthusiasts are invited to call 844-885-2734 or visit Elmhurst Jaguar’s
showroom at 490 West Lake Street if they would like to make any inquiries about
availability. As a high performance, luxury crossover SUV, it’s likely to generate the
same level of enthusiasm that has already been witnessed during its tour of the German
auto show circuit. The other new arrival to the Jaguar lineup, the Jaguar XE executive
sedan, is also eagerly anticipated, as early reviews have praised its handling and
amenities. True performance lovers may feel the need to get behind the wheel of a fine

schedule a test drive in the fastest cat of them all, the stunningly powerful F-
Type. Though the all-electric E-PACE may not arrive in showrooms for another year or
two, these and other Jaguar models already have the power to fire the spark in any
driver’s soul.

For Your Eyes Only: The Jaguar Concept Car That
Will Light Up Spectre
BY JAGADMIN· SEPTEMBER 24,2015
Bond. James Bond. For nearly 60 years the British Secret Service agent with a license
to kill has thrilled audiences around the globe with fierce car chases that end in death-
defying escapes, however it looks like 007’s luck may have caught up with him in the
forthcoming film Spectre. The reason is simple: He’s being pursued by a Jaguar.
The new Jaguar driven during a twisting battle through the streets of Rome by the
sinister Mr. Hinx is also no ordinary Jaguar — though of course no Jaguar is truly
ordinary — but rather a stunt car that’s modeled after the Jaguar C-X75, an ultra
advanced hybrid electric concept car that was built for the 2010 Paris Motor Show in
honor of Jaguar’s 75th anniversary. Originally outfitted with two diesel-fed
microturbines that generated power for four 145 kW (194 hp) motors that each drove
their own wheel and, combined, yielded a total of 778 horses that could accelerate the
prototype to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds, the few additional test cars that were built are
powered by a twin-charged four-cylinder engine that delivers power to an electric motor
at each axle, delivering a total of nearly 1000 hp of muscle.
These rare prototypes are obviously too valuable to be driven through the gun battles,
explosions, collisions, and other hazards that are par for the course in a chase that
involves Commander Bond, so Jaguar and the producers of Spectre approached
Williams Advanced Engineering, which had played a major role in the development of
the original C-X75, to create five stunt cars for the film. Given conventional, albeit still
powerful, supercharged Jaguar V-8s that growl with 575 hp, they retain the same body
dimensions and styling as the concept C-X75s, though a steel spaceframe with an
integrated roll cage was used instead of a carbon fiber tub due to the extremely violent
stunts the vehicles had to endure during filming.
‘Violent’ is a word that doesn’t do justice to the view to a kill that the stunt cars
experienced, however, as one was literally set on fire during a chase scene that must
have scared the living daylights out of the stunt driver. It looks, as with Mr. Bond
himself, that the C-X75 stunt cars will get to live twice, though, as Williams has repaired
them for the Spectre promotional tour.
The sight of the auto world’s favorite jungle cat is also not unfamiliar in the Bond films,
as a Jaguar XKR was used by the icy henchman Zao in Die Another Day, while the
sinister Le Chifre drove a Jaguar XJ8 in the critically acclaimed Casino Royale. A
stately Jaguar XJ (X351) even served as the official MI6 car for 007’s boss, M, in
Skyfall.
If you like what you’ve seen in the Bond films, you don’t have to wait for a promotional
car to tour Chicagoland, though, as all of the beauty and power exhibited by Jaguar
premium performance cars, including that displayed by the C-X75 in Spectre, await any
driver who visits Elmhurst Jaguar’s showroom at 490 West Lake Street. This is
because many of the technologies that were developed for Jaguar’s concept cars,
including the C-X75, now come standard in our new production models. The 2016
Jaguar F-Type R, for instance, is equipped with a Torque Vectoring system that is
similar to that used on the C-X75, and its 550 hp, supercharged V-8 yields a top speed
of 186 mph.
The striking lines of the Jaguar C-X75 can’t be denied, of course, and we think it’s
obvious that James Bond himself should drive one to the office the next time he wants
to impress Ms. Moneypenny.

While the uniquely tuned vehicles that premiere at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas are
usually not offered for public consumption, they do provide a glimpse into what the
manufacturers are considering for future trims. They also draw attention to the
capabilities of existing models. This piece serves to both promote existing Genesis
trims as well, through a detailed description of the parts upfit the Solus received, to
indicate how performance aficionados can upgrade their own vehicles (note that this
sample includes the photo from the companion Twitter post, as it accurately reflects the
Solus concept).
ARK Performance and Hyundai Team Up To Deliver
Hyundai Genesis Solus
BY ROSENBLOG ·SEPTEMBER30, 2015
Since 1967, the annual SEMA Show has thrilled auto aficionados with a bevy of tuned
up, aggressively upfitted cars from specialty equipment manufacturers and shops,
including many customized builds that later served as the inspiration for production
vehicles. This year’s SEMA in Las Vegas looks to be just as enticing, as Hyundai and
their frequent technology partners at ARK Performance have announced that they’ve
joined forces to create a stunning, 500 horsepower performance concept: the
new Hyundai Genesis Solus that will officially premiere at the show.
Based on the already impressive new Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the eye-catching
Hyundai Genesis Solus is powered by a Hyundai 3.8L Lambda V6 that has been
stroked out to 4.0L by ARK using their unique Brian Crower 4.0L Stroker Kit. With the
addition of a custom Rotrex Supercharger System, also built by ARK Performance, an
AEM Water/Methanol Injection Kit with VP Racing M1 Methanol, JE Pistons, and Brian
Crower Rods and Crank, among other enhancements, the motor on the Solus can now
turn out over 500 hp of taut muscle that’s channelled through a rear wheel drive system.
In achieving this power boost, Ark Performance and Hyundai haven’t neglected
handling, however, as an Ark Performance DT-P Coilover Suspension Kit, ARK
Performance Strut Tower Brace, and Nitto NT05 tires round out some of the features
that give the Hyundai Genesis Solus a racetrack-ready responsiveness. Lap3 Korea
Custom ECU Tuning, Rockford Fosgate Complete PUNCH premium speakers, and an
AiM Sports MXG Digital Color Display also go a long way toward creating a ride that is
both smooth and filled with driver-friendly amenities.
“The Genesis Coupe is the perfect platform for developing our performance product
lineup,” said Kevin Bentley, Marketing and Sales Manager, ARK Performance, Inc when
asked for a comment on the Solus, which is the tuner’s seventh consecutive build for
SEMA. “Hyundai’s 3.8-liter engine is strong enough to handle all the extra power we’re
now developing, and the chassis is well balanced and easy to modify, allowing us to
create this lowered, aggressive stance while maintaining that clean look we’re going
for.”
As any car enthusiasts knows, the raw performance of any entrant is only half of the
battle that occurs on the SEMA Show floor, as the look of specially tuned, upfitted
vehicles is indeed what many visitors are attending to see. To create a distinct aesthetic
for the project, ARK Performance installed their own Ad’ro/ARK ‘Solus’ Wide Body Kit,
which gives the Hyundai Genesis Solus a low, more powerful stance, a bumper with
large intakes and a carbon-fiber splitter, widened fenders, and extended side skirts that
make the build reminiscent of the aquatic predators that are only found in the depths of
the ocean. Rear over fenders and an Ad’ro/ARK ‘Legato’ Rear Spoiler finish the design
off by making it feel as powerful as it is driving away as it is approaching.
Sponsored by Quaker State, which is the factory fill oil that all Hyundais have when they
roll off the assembly line, and Hyundai Assurance Car Care Express, which provides
quick oil changes, tire rotation, and other services in less than an hour to customers at
300 service centers nationally, the Hyundai Genesis Solus is likely to be positioned as a
Page 26 of 29
competitor to the BMW M4 and Lexus RC F if it enters production due to its
performance and price tier.
Though everyone who truly appreciates finely tuned luxury vehicles is encouraged to
attend this year’s SEMA Show, we understand that not everyone will be able to see the
Hyundai Genesis Solus in Las Vegas this November. Anyone in the Chicagoland area
can inspect the comfortable, tightly-tuned 2015 Hyundai Genesis models in Rosen
Hyundai’s showroom at 771 South Randall Road in Algonquin, however, or even call
our sales professionals at (888) 757-5628 to inquire about any limited edition Genesis
trims Hyundai may offer in the future. As a Hyundai Car Care Express center, we also
offer convenient service to any Hyundai owner who wants their vehicle to be maintained
by Hyundai-trained and certified technicians. Schedule your service online today or call
(888) 806-3252 to ask about our current specials.

WardsAuto Names the Camaro V6 and Volt Voltec
Among Top Ten Engines in the Industry
BY RAY_FOX_LAKE ·DECEMBER 28,2015
The innovations introduced to the new Chevrolet Camaro (Gen 6) and Chevrolet Volt
(Gen 2) for model year 2016 have not only enhanced their consumer appeal, but also
won critical acclaim. Now WardsAuto has extended that trend of success, as it recently
named the standard 3.6L V-6 on the 2016 Camaro and Voltec system on the 2016 Volt
Page 28 of 29
to its list of 10 Best Engines, an achievement that reflects the efficiency, reliability, and
power of both powertrains.
For this year’s competition, which covered products for the 2016 model year, the editors
at WardsAuto reviewed 31 separate engines from 11 automobile manufacturers. While
they compared each engine on a one by one basis within its class according to baseline
criteria such as power output and fuel efficiency, they also evaluated new technology
and rewarded refinement and quality.
After reviewing the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro LT’s V-6, the case for its conclusion in the
Top 10 list became clear, as the 3.6L engine generates an SAE-certified 335
horsepower (250 kW) and 284 lb-ft of torque (385 Nm), making it the naturally aspirated
V-6 with the highest specific output in its market segment. The Camaro LT V-6’s power
envelope wasn’t its only winning trait, however, as the motor also features a number of
efficiency-enhancing technologies, including direct injection and continuously variable
valve timing. Its most impressive new technology, however, may be an Active Fuel
Management system that deactivates two cylinders when the Camaro is being put
through light driving conditions, then reactivates them when the driver calls upon more
power.
WardsAuto also rewarded the 3.6L V-6 on the 2016 Camaro LT for thoughtful touches
that enhance the driver’s comfort, among which is an all-new cam drive system that
makes the engine up to 4 dB quieter under low-load driving conditions than other
powerplants in its class, including the benchmark Infiniti 3.7L V-6.
Given its unique hybrid nature, the recognition for the 2016 Chevrolet Volt reflects upon
its entire power generation system, as the powertrain uses an 84 hp, 1.5L Atkinson-
cycle I-4 gas in conjunction with two permanent magnet electric motors (149 hp/111 kW
and 74 hp/55 kW, respectively) and a new 18.4 kWh lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery system
to yield either hybrid or pure electric operation. Though the total driving range for the
Voltec system is more than 420 miles under one fueling and charge, drivers can expect
to surpass 1,000 miles between trips to the gas station with regular charging. The
system is also capable of traveling up to 53 miles on pure electric power, while it yields
a combined EPA-estimated 42 MPG fuel economy when in hybrid operation.
The improvements that have been made to the Gen 2 Chevrolet Volt have enhanced
more than just efficiency, however, as the Voltec system is now up to 100 pounds
lighter than its predecessor, while its ability to draw from both electric motors at once
has led to a 19% increase in electric acceleration from 0 to 30 MPH and 7% increase in
electric acceleration from 0 to 60 MPH, turning out relevant track times of 2.6 and 8.4
seconds, respectively.
Changes to the Gen 2 Chevy Volt’s Li-Ion battery system also contributed to its
recognition as, through a partnership with LG Chem, the engineers at General Motors
were able to increase its storage capacity while decreasing the number of cells used
Page 29 of 29
from 288 to 192. The cells were also positioned lower in the battery pack, creating a
safer, lower center of gravity.
Fortunately for Chicagoland drivers, there’s no wait to buy a car with either of these
engines, as both the 2016 Camaro LT and 2016 Volt are already for sale at Ray
Chevrolet. As it’s located at 39 N Route 12 in Fox Lake, our fully stocked lot is even a
convenient drive for most northeastern Illinois and southern Wisconsin drivers, while our
great special deals make buying either model budget-friendly. Call our sales
professionals at (866) 289-6476 to learn more about these deals as well as our full
lineup of great 2016 Chevrolet vehicles.

  • 2. Page 2 of 29 Automotive Press Releases and Blogs _____________________ The following piece was written for Elmhurst BMW to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the official establishment of BMW operations in North America. To show that BMW’s roots in the United States actually go back much further, I delved into how famed premium auto dealer Max Hoffman introduced the American public to the brand as early as the 1950s. Though AIM illustrated the piece with an image of modern BMW models, I highlighted the development of the BMW 2002 to emphasize that the company established the compact executive car class in North America. The piece can be viewed here on the client’s website. BMW North America Celebrates 40 Years BY BMWADMIN· OCTOBER 21,2015 October marks the 40th anniversary of BMW’s official entry into the North American market, however the history of split kidney-grilled “Bimmers” goes back a bit earlier in the U.S. than the official introduction of the BMW 3 Series E 21 in 1975 for the 1976 model year. While the “Dreier” certainly made its mark in the nascent executive compact car market and convinced a generation of upmarket drivers to embrace the significantly more powerful BMW 3 Series E30 in the 1980s, it actually built upon a small core of aficionados who had been collecting Bavarian Motor Works vehicles since they were first imported to the U.S. by famed dealer Max Hoffman in 1954. Born in Austria in 1904, Hoffman later migrated to the United States and, by the 1950s, had established an influential auto import business that was based in New York City.
  • 3. Page 3 of 29 Though he happily fulfilled orders for European cars that were already in demand among prosperous post-war Americans, Hoffman quickly gained a reputation for suggesting rarer types to discerning clients and taking the risks that are associated with introducing unfamiliar brands through an independently-run dealership network. Among a number of both rare and now commonplace marques, he decided to import his first BMWs in 1954 and, as the decade went on, actually had a hand in suggesting some of the design features that were incorporated into the stunning BMW 507. It wasn’t until the BMW “New Class” appeared in 1962 that this part of his portfolio began to make a true profit, however. Beginning with the BMW 1500, this family of vehicles was powered by front-mounted M10 Straight-4 engines, had unitary construction, fully independent suspension with MacPherson struts in front and semi- trailing arms in the rear, and front disc brakes. By the late 1960s they had evolved, partially at the suggestion of Hoffman, into the more robust, sporty BMW 2002. Featuring a 1,900 cc engine that was sold with either a base single carburetor or a high performance, high compression dual-carburetor, it was this model that was famously reviewed by auto writer David E. Davis Jr. in a 1968 Car and Driver article entitled “Turn Your Hymnals To 2002”. In retrospect, it’s easy to see why the 2002 made such a splash in the industry press of the time. While European cars had made their way into the American consciousness as early as the 1950s, they were mostly in the form of British roadsters that, while attractive and offering great handling, were woefully underpowered. Italian firms had managed to sell a few select high performance models among upmarket buyers by the 1960s, however these cars were considered difficult to maintain and closer to show pieces than true driver’s vehicles. On the domestic front, of course, Detroit was at a zenith that was marked by a wide field of incredibly powerful muscle cars, however while those vehicles exuded horsepower and had iconic styling, they were built for going fast and straight over quarter mile stretches and, with one or two exceptions, had limited handling. The market for performance vehicles, simply put, was constrained both in terms of categories and capability. The BMW 2002 that premiered in 1968, on the other hand, had a power to weight ratio that, while it did not produce a top speed that approached the muscle and dedicated race cars of the day, afforded impressive acceleration, especially on curves. Its compact body, suspension, and wheelbase dimensions also meant that it was highly maneuverable, and it wasn’t long before the 2002 and its variants were found in racing circuits around the world. The BMW 2002’s impact on the U.S. market wasn’t entirely due to performance, however. As one of the few compact executive sedans on the market, it filled a growing niche, as businessmen across the country realized that it was ideal for driving and parking in increasingly congested urban environments. In keeping with the already formidable mechanical reputation of Bavarian Motor Works, it was also reliable.
  • 4. Page 4 of 29 The retirement of the 2002 coincided with Hoffman’s decision to sell his distribution rights back to BMW in 1975, thus creating BMW North America. While the BMW 3 Series E21 initially had its detractors due to engine choices that were limited to the M10 I-4, the introduction of the more powerful M20 six-cylinders enabled the E21 to rebound and set the stage for the success of the BMW 3 Series E30 in the 1980s. Though Hoffman passed away in 1981, his wife soon established a charitable foundation in his name that, even today, carries on his legacy through philanthropic donations to groups that are involved in education, the arts, and medicine. The legacy established by Max Hoffman and the engineers who created the likes of the BMW 2002 and BMW 3 Series E30 also lives on for drivers, as the current model lineup for BMW includes a number of autos, such as the 2016 BMW Z4 sDrive35i and 2016 BMW 6 Series 650i, that embody performance, luxury, and sound design. Vehicles like the 2016 BMW X3 xDrive28i even give consumers cargo and passenger-carrying capabilities that would have been unheard of back in Hoffman’s time. To become a part of this heritage, call Elmhurst BMW at (844) 671-0006 or visit our showroom at 466 West Lake Street in Elmhurst to learn more about this year’s BMWs or schedule a test drive. We’re confident you’ll conclude, as was true in the era of the BMW 2002, that BMWs are still the ultimate driving machines. ____________________ This ‘teaser’ alerts car enthusiasts to the possibility that the BMW-Toyota partnership might lead to a new sports car, however it also uses the overall excitement generated by the FT-1 concept car’s design to introduce drivers to a number of innovations Toyota is working on, including vehicles that use hydrogen fuel cells as a source of electricity. While any future BMW-Toyota collaboration may not be an HEV and the FT-1 itself may have a conventional piston engine if it ever goes to production, the piece concludes by introducing consumers to the innovative powertrains that can be found at the client’s location. Though this press release/blog can be found here, it has already been posted posted on the client’s site more than once. Speed, a Revolutionary Power Source, or Both: The Fruits of The Recent Toyota-BMW Partnership Expected To Be Announced This Year BY ADMIN · SEPTEMBER19,2015
  • 5. Page 5 of 29 Toyota and BMW startled the industry and launched the speculation of auto enthusiasts into high gear when they announced a partnership to develop hydrogen fuel cell cars and lightweight materials in 2012, however it is the mystery of the third part of this deal,
  • 6. Page 6 of 29 the option of creating an entirely new sports car platform, that tantalized performance aficionados the most. Though no clear and concrete statements have been made to the press about the status of this top secret project, we can now report that a decision on whether the Toyota-BMW sports car project will proceed is expected to be revealed by the end of the year. Though nothing official has been cleared for release regarding the car’s performance capabilities, styling, or powertrain, there are already enough clues out in the open to give Toyota drivers a sense of what may be to come. The new Toyota FT-1 concept car, which was personally pitched to Toyota president Akio Toyoda by Toyota’s Calty Design Research studio, wowed sports car enthusiasts at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. Featuring classic sport car proportions that set the driver behind a long hood that tapers into an aggressive, shark-like fascia, the FT-1 drew Toyoda’s praise for meeting his request that new cars reflect a “I want this… I HAVE to drive this” appeal. Its flowing body style, which has been described by head designer Alex Chen as reflecting a “Function Sculpting” philosophy, was noted for looking unified and consistent from all angles, resulting in a body that is attractive whether it’s coming or going. Though it’s possible that the FT-1 will enter direct production, there’s also a likelihood that the new sports car will either be a redesigned Supra that incorporates FT-1 design cues or a total replacement for the Supra that is based on an admixture of the FT-1 and a BMW powertrain. This platform could be launched concordantly with the expected replacement for the BMW Z4. Since the Z4 successor is expected to use the twin- turbocharged inline six that’s found on the latest BMW M3s and M4s, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the Toyota-BMW sports car could mate the striking body of the Toyota FT-1 with the power of the BMW twin-turbocharged inline six. The result would clearly be a performance car that has the responsiveness and speed to match its beauty.
  • 7. Page 7 of 29 There are, of course, other somewhat more surprising possibilities. The Toyota-BMW partnership has already influenced the design of the 2016 Toyota Mirai, which uses a hydrogen fuel cell to power an electric motor. As with all fuel cell designs, the Mirai FCV mixes hydrogen that has been stored in a highly secure and safe fuel tank with oxygen that has been filtered through the car’s front grille. The reaction produces electricity that is used to power the Mirai’s motor and no emissions other than harmless water vapor. Altogether, the fuel cell system on the 2016 Toyota Mirai emits zero carbon-based chemicals and has a range of over 300 miles. Given that the average American has a daily round-trip commute of 34 miles and the hydrogen fuel tanks only take ten minutes to fill, this means that the Mirai is both a practical and environmentally friendly vehicle. Is it, well, possible that the new Toyota-BMW sports car will utilize a hydrogen fuel cell- electric powertrain like that used on the 2016 Toyota Mirai? That possibility may seem far off, but there’s growing demand for performance cars that use alternative fuel and engineering systems. BMW has also demonstrated HFC technology on its i8 and 5 Series Gran Turismo. While the greater likelihood is that the new sports car, if it is approved, will use a conventional engine, the expansion of hydrogen fuel stations outside of California, which Toyota is helping to subsidize, makes this a possibility.

Mazda Racing Heritage Lives On BY AIM-ROSENMAZDA· NOVEMBER 24, 2015
  • 10. Page 10 of 29 A low, sleek body that’s defined by smooth, clutter-free side panels and a long hood that takes a dramatic dive into a puckish fascia is what put the new Mazda RX-Vision Concept on the front of everyone’s mind at this year’s Tokyo Auto Show — however it’s the sport coupe’s powerplant that has kept insiders talking about it. This is because, as revealed by Kiyoshi Fujiwara, General Manager of Mazda’s Powertrain Development Division, the RX-Vision draws its horses from an all-new Wankel rotary engine dubbed the SkyActiv-R. Able to rapidly generate high revolutions per minute and characterized by a high power- to-weight ratio, smoothness, and simplicity of maintenance, Wankel rotary motors are ideal for both competition race cars and consumer performance vehicles of all types, especially sports coupes and roadsters. Unlike conventional gas-powered engines, which use reciprocating pistons to generate power by turning a crankshaft, Wankel motors consist of symmetrical, triangular rotors with gently curved sides that are contained within a nearly oval housing, with the four strokes of the Otto cycle occurring in the space between the rotor and the inside of the housing. This causes the rotor to turn about an eccentric shaft that functions as a drive shaft, transferring rotational motion out toward the drivetrain. Since the intake, compression, ignition, and exhaust stages occur simultaneously on the Wankel and all of its parts move in the same direction, its layout permits unhindered, rapid ‘spooling’ up into high RPMs without any of the violent changes in direction that characterize the action of a conventional piston engine. Since they generate a power output that is equivalent to a piston engine that is three times the size, the performance profile of a Wankel rotary is therefore ideal for any light vehicle that must routinely operate at high RPM, as is the case with sport motorbikes and cars. Historically, Wankel rotary motors have not been without their challenges, however, as the engine layout lends itself to uneven heating of both the rotor and housing, though ceramic coatings can mitigate this issue. Previous incarnations have also been known for poor fuel economy and high emissions, as the shape of older combustion chambers led to unburnt fuel in the exhaust. Fujiwara has stated that these issues have been resolved in the motor that was installed in the RX-Vision Concept through a combination of computer modeling and control as well other advances, though, and the new motor is expected to have fuel consumption and emission levels that are on par with other engines in its power class. While the performance specs for the Mazda SkyActiv-R rotary engine have not been released, Fujiwara noted, “If we were to mass produce the car, the [Porsche] Cayman is the right kind of assumption [as a rival]. We’d like to make it lighter than a Cayman.” Given that the Cayman was directly referenced and that the RX-Vision Concept has similar dimensions to the Jaguar F-Type, it’s reasonable to conclude that production versions of the SkyActive-R Wankel rotary may approach 380 to 385 hp. Fujiwara also stated that hybridization and turbocharging were being considered, however both forms of augmentation would take away from two of the selling points of Wankel rotary engines, which are ease of manufacture and simplicity. He did state,
  • 11. Page 11 of 29 however, that work on perfecting the motor would continue until a production version of the RX-Vision Concept, which may be badged as the next RX-7 or RX-9, was released. “Based on the things we’ve been studying, there is still room for more modifications”, he said.
  • 13. Page 13 of 29 For fans of Mazda, especially Mazda’s racing heritage, the revelation that a new Wankel rotary design had been installed in a concept car that is likely to be used as the basis for a production vehicle has been cause for both celebration and a drive through the best parts of memory lane. This is because, though the first examples were patented in 1929 by Felix Wankel and assembled by German firm NSU Motorenwerke AG in the 1950s, Mazda became the most visible promoter of the design after they signed a development contract with NSU in 1961. While NSU had a slight lead time advantage, the Mazda rotaries soon became the more popular choice, as the Hiroshima-based company quickly solved an apex seal issue that had plagued earlier models and, by 1967, had fielded their first Wankel rotary-powered car, the Cosmo 110S. Wankel rotaries became standard fare in Mazda sports cars during the years that followed. Usually arranged in double rotor designs, though a twin-turbo three-rotor engine was fitted in the 1991 Eunos Cosmo, these units were known for being able to achieve high RPM and speed, though rising fuel prices gradually reduced their consumer use after 1970. The final rotary-driven Mazda model, the RX-8, was retired in 2012. In the world of sanctioned competitive racing, however, the Mazda Wankel rotaries had major successes, as a Mazda 12-A rotary engine-powered Sigma MC74 was the first engine/team from outside the United States or Europe to finish the entire 24 Hours of Le Mans Race in 1974. In 1991, the four-rotor Mazda 787B became the first — and to this day, only — engine/team from outside the U.S. or Europe to win Le Mans outright.
  • 15. Page 15 of 29 While an exact date for the release of a RX-Vision Concept-derived car is not set, many insiders point to 2017, as that date would mark the 50th anniversary of the Cosmo 110S. Others point to 2020, which would honor the company’s 100th birthday. One thing that can be certain is that, in one form or another, rotary engines will play a role in Mazda’s future. Said Mazda president and CEO Masamichi Kogai, “One day rotary will make a comeback. This gives form to our brand’s vision of the future. It expresses our intention to make rotary. There are many issues to overcome but we will continue our efforts. We’re working steadily. Keep your eyes on Mazda.” Though the debut of a RX-Vision Concept-derived vehicle is several years in the future, performance aficionados can nevertheless strap into a world-renowned Mazda sports car today. One such automobile is the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, which is an open cockpit, lightweight roadster that exemplifies the philosophy of “Jinba ittai” (‘rider horse as one body’). With a 155hp SKYACTIV-G 2.0L DOHC 16-valve, 4-cylinder engine that powers a rear wheel driven, 2332lb unibody, the 2016 MX-5 Miata offers snappy acceleration, however the agile handling provided by its 4-wheel independent suspension (double-wishbone in front, multi-link in rear), perfectly balanced 53/47 weight distribution, and taut 90.9” wheelbase are what have made this roadster a legend. If the MX-5 sounds like a car that can slake your thirst for performance driving, stop by Rosen Mazda at 100 N. When Performance Is Mandatory, Law Enforcement Turns To The Dodge Charger Pursuit BY ADMIN · OCTOBER14, 2015
  • 16. Page 16 of 29 For law enforcement, no two patrols are exactly the same. One shift may be quiet and relatively uneventful, with time mostly spent providing a reassuring presence within a familiar community, while the next may be occupied responding to accidents in blizzard conditions, traversing unpaved roads during a missing persons search, or, when what a law enforcement officer drives really does matter, in hot pursuit of a dangerous suspect. Fortunately for the law — and unfortunately for criminals — Dodge builds a car that can handle any challenge that may be encountered while on patrol: The Dodge Charger Pursuit. The reason why the new Dodge Charger Pursuit has become America’s top selling police sedan is precisely because it can effectively respond to any challenge it’s driven into. As a full-bodied sedan, it has the size and strength needed to perform dangerous pit maneuvers, transport suspects, and easily brush aside inclement weather, while it’s not so large that it can’t be navigated with confidence through winding alleys, congested traffic, or road hazards. The heart of the Dodge Charger Pursuit’s strength as a law enforcement vehicle is plainly stated in its name, however, as the power generated by its 292hp 3.6L Pentastar V-6 or 370hp 5.7L HEMI® V-8 and the handling advantages of its rear-wheel drive make this thoroughbred muscle car perfect for overtaking and outmaneuvering fleeing suspects in dangerous situations. The overall capabilities of the Dodge Charger Pursuit were so great that, in a publicly released report, the Michigan State Police concluded that it easily outperformed other available police sedans and had the fastest track speed of all vehicles tested.
  • 17. Page 17 of 29 Though raw speed and acceleration — 5.7L HEMI® V-8 equipped units can smoothly accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds — are a major part of the Dodge Charger Pursuit’s appeal to law enforcement, they’re also major sellers due to reliability and cost efficiency. While it can attain up to 25 MPG highway when in normal use, the 5.7L HEMI® V-8 also incorporates innovative Fuel Saver Technology that allows four cylinders to be deactivated during cruise or patrol conditions, making it the ideal engine choice for state highway patrols that need efficient, yet high performance, vehicles. The 3.6L Pentastar V-6 that is also offered with the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit, on the other hand, has an E-85 flex fuel capability and spark plugs that are designed for 100,000 miles of use before replacement, making fleet operation something even small municipalities can afford. Brute strength alone does not decide the outcome of most emergency situations, however, as nimble handling can ensure that civilian lives and law enforcement personnel are not put in unnecessary danger. As with civilian production trims, the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit is equipped with either rear wheel drive or optional all wheel drive, both of which have clear handling advantages over front wheel drive when paired with a high performance powertrain. Besides the fact that rear wheel drive offers faster and more responsive acceleration, it also mitigates “weight shift” due to a better balanced center of gravity, thus increasing maneuverability. Rear wheel drive even eliminates the so-called “plowing effect” wherein FWD vehicles dig in as they corner at high speeds, a trait that would obviously put the police at a disadvantage when tracking a suspect through dense urban areas. Finally, RWD does not generate the “torque steer” that overworks the wheels on FWD cars, thus enhancing the traction and control on the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit. Since modern law enforcement agencies work best when they can access a large pool of intelligence, Dodge also offers the Uconnect® 5.0 connectivity group, which incorporates an AM/FM/Bluetooth® Media Hub that includes an SD card reader, USB port, and auxiliary jack, with the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit. Based on the same advanced technology found on civilian Dodge Charger trims, Uconnect® allows integrated Voice Command with Bluetooth as well as Bluetooth streaming audio. The 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit even comes equipped with an industry-leading 12.1” integrated touchscreen that can be used to select Uconnect® options, calibrate vehicle controls, access specialized agency software, or review data that has been retrieved from SD cards or mobile devices. As with civilian Dodge Charger trims, this ensures that law enforcement officials always have access to the information they need when they want it. Finally, any highway patrolman or police officer will tell you that the best way for a pursuit to end is for it to never have begun at all. It’s for this reason that Dodge incorporates the same aggressive and assertive styling that’s found on every new Dodge Charger in the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit. A recently redesigned fascia that sports a distinctive crosshair grille and serpentine headlights immediately signals that the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit embodies the same performance that street legal variants are known for, while high doors and a full body project authority on the road. In
  • 18. Page 18 of 29 short, potential high speed pursuit scenarios are thwarted before they begin by the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit because suspects know that it simply can’t be beat. Ultimately, the most interesting thing about the 2015 Dodge Charger Pursuit is that, though it has special features like the multi-port Vehicle System Interface Module that can be used to power and control agency-select items like additional lights and radios, this high performance law enforcement vehicle shares most of its mechanical and handling advantages with its civilian stablemates. 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack and 2015 Dodge Charger SRT® 392 trims are even equipped with a 485hp 6.4L SRT® HEMI® V-8, while the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT® Hellcat sports an intimidating 707hp 6.2L Supercharged HEMI® V-8 SRT Hellcat engine, meaning that Naperville CJDR customers actually have more powerful options than the police when it comes to available Chargers. Is Jaguar About To Turn The New F-PACE Into An Electric Car? BY JAGADMIN· NOVEMBER 24, 2015
  • 19. Page 19 of 29 The all-new Jaguar F-PACE, which is set to go on sale in the U.S. in 2016 as a 2017 model year vehicle, drew rave reviews when it premiered on the German auto show circuit this fall, however there are already inklings that Jaguar has even bigger plans for this high performance crossover SUV. While the first generation of F-PACEs will be sold in the U.S. with either a 380-340hp, 3.0L supercharged V6 or a 180hp, 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder Ingenium diesel, company sources have indicated Jaguar has launched a program to develop an all-electric, plug-in powertrain for the new luxury vehicle. Though no public launch date has been set, it is expected that the new trim will be christened the ‘E-PACE’ and have a minimum range of 200 miles, though an upper limit of 300 miles is also a possibility. Currently, most plug-in electric vehicles utilize a single permanent magnet electric traction motor that draws from a lithium-ion battery for propulsion, with current ranges on entry-level all-electric vehicles spanning from about 75 to 85 miles when in normal
  • 20. Page 20 of 29 use. The E-PACE, however, is likely to use a more advanced 60-90 kWh Li-Ion battery that will power electric motors on each axle, creating a complete through-the-road all- wheel-drive system. Because such a layout does not incorporate a heavy drive axle, it saves weight, which makes the powertrain system even more efficient and responsive. Since a similar electric motor-axle arrangement has already been tested on the Jaguar C-X75 concept car, development is expected to be smooth despite the revolutionary nature of the technology. Though it will be based on the same platform as the F-PACE, the E-PACE is also likely to benefit from the lightweight aluminum architecture that has been jointly developed for the 2017 F-PACE and 2017 Jaguar XE Sedan. As this new global architecture, which has been introduced as part of an across-the-board model lineup revision on the part of Jaguar, retains the strength of a steel body while reducing weight, it’s likely to maintain most of the upcoming F-PACE’s high-end performance capabilities. Performance is, of course, part of the F-PACE’s essence, as the new crossover SUV was designed from the ground up to deliver the same speed and handling capabilities that are expected of any fine Jaguar vehicle. While the 380hp, 3.0L supercharged V6- equipped 2017 F-PACE models are capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 5.1 seconds — a stat that easily beats the performance of most sports sedans — the 340hp V6, 2.0L Ingenium turbo diesel, and 3.0L V6 turbo diesel-powered trims also pack significant athleticism. The 300hp made available by the 3.0L V6 turbo diesel, which will only be available in Europe next year, even affords the F-PACE a top speed of 150mph and the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 5.8 seconds, which is almost unheard of in a vehicle in its class. Along with the possible introduction of an all-electric powertrain, Jaguar is also looking into expanding its already planned phase-in of Ingenium diesel engine-equipped trims across the model line, with the exception of the high performance F-Type, which will be powered by a 3.0L supercharged V6 in the near future and may be equipped with a gasoline-powered inline six that can generate up to 500hp after 2017. The Ingenium family of diesel engines is also likely to serve as the design starting point for any other new gasoline-powered engines Jaguar fields in upcoming model years. Given that the current and arriving Jaguar models have relatively large engine compartments, the company has significant leeway when it comes to selecting powertrain types with its current and incoming platforms. While the conventionally-powered F-PACE won’t be sold in the United States until early 2016, driving enthusiasts are invited to call 844-885-2734 or visit Elmhurst Jaguar’s showroom at 490 West Lake Street if they would like to make any inquiries about availability. As a high performance, luxury crossover SUV, it’s likely to generate the same level of enthusiasm that has already been witnessed during its tour of the German auto show circuit. The other new arrival to the Jaguar lineup, the Jaguar XE executive sedan, is also eagerly anticipated, as early reviews have praised its handling and amenities. True performance lovers may feel the need to get behind the wheel of a fine European sports car immediately, however, and in that case they’re always welcome to
  • 21. Page 21 of 29 schedule a test drive in the fastest cat of them all, the stunningly powerful F- Type. Though the all-electric E-PACE may not arrive in showrooms for another year or two, these and other Jaguar models already have the power to fire the spark in any driver’s soul. ____________________ While the incredibly impressive Jaguar C-X75 was a limited production vehicle, media tie-ins like this piece help to both expose the brand and emphasize its research efforts into advanced gas-electric hybrid powertrains. For Your Eyes Only: The Jaguar Concept Car That Will Light Up Spectre BY JAGADMIN· SEPTEMBER 24,2015
  • 22. Page 22 of 29 Bond. James Bond. For nearly 60 years the British Secret Service agent with a license to kill has thrilled audiences around the globe with fierce car chases that end in death- defying escapes, however it looks like 007’s luck may have caught up with him in the forthcoming film Spectre. The reason is simple: He’s being pursued by a Jaguar.
  • 23. Page 23 of 29 The new Jaguar driven during a twisting battle through the streets of Rome by the sinister Mr. Hinx is also no ordinary Jaguar — though of course no Jaguar is truly ordinary — but rather a stunt car that’s modeled after the Jaguar C-X75, an ultra advanced hybrid electric concept car that was built for the 2010 Paris Motor Show in honor of Jaguar’s 75th anniversary. Originally outfitted with two diesel-fed microturbines that generated power for four 145 kW (194 hp) motors that each drove their own wheel and, combined, yielded a total of 778 horses that could accelerate the prototype to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds, the few additional test cars that were built are powered by a twin-charged four-cylinder engine that delivers power to an electric motor at each axle, delivering a total of nearly 1000 hp of muscle. These rare prototypes are obviously too valuable to be driven through the gun battles, explosions, collisions, and other hazards that are par for the course in a chase that involves Commander Bond, so Jaguar and the producers of Spectre approached Williams Advanced Engineering, which had played a major role in the development of the original C-X75, to create five stunt cars for the film. Given conventional, albeit still powerful, supercharged Jaguar V-8s that growl with 575 hp, they retain the same body dimensions and styling as the concept C-X75s, though a steel spaceframe with an integrated roll cage was used instead of a carbon fiber tub due to the extremely violent stunts the vehicles had to endure during filming. ‘Violent’ is a word that doesn’t do justice to the view to a kill that the stunt cars experienced, however, as one was literally set on fire during a chase scene that must have scared the living daylights out of the stunt driver. It looks, as with Mr. Bond himself, that the C-X75 stunt cars will get to live twice, though, as Williams has repaired them for the Spectre promotional tour. The sight of the auto world’s favorite jungle cat is also not unfamiliar in the Bond films, as a Jaguar XKR was used by the icy henchman Zao in Die Another Day, while the sinister Le Chifre drove a Jaguar XJ8 in the critically acclaimed Casino Royale. A stately Jaguar XJ (X351) even served as the official MI6 car for 007’s boss, M, in Skyfall. If you like what you’ve seen in the Bond films, you don’t have to wait for a promotional car to tour Chicagoland, though, as all of the beauty and power exhibited by Jaguar premium performance cars, including that displayed by the C-X75 in Spectre, await any driver who visits Elmhurst Jaguar’s showroom at 490 West Lake Street. This is because many of the technologies that were developed for Jaguar’s concept cars, including the C-X75, now come standard in our new production models. The 2016 Jaguar F-Type R, for instance, is equipped with a Torque Vectoring system that is similar to that used on the C-X75, and its 550 hp, supercharged V-8 yields a top speed of 186 mph. The striking lines of the Jaguar C-X75 can’t be denied, of course, and we think it’s obvious that James Bond himself should drive one to the office the next time he wants to impress Ms. Moneypenny.

ARK Performance and Hyundai Team Up To Deliver Hyundai Genesis Solus BY ROSENBLOG ·SEPTEMBER30, 2015
  • 25. Page 25 of 29 Since 1967, the annual SEMA Show has thrilled auto aficionados with a bevy of tuned up, aggressively upfitted cars from specialty equipment manufacturers and shops, including many customized builds that later served as the inspiration for production vehicles. This year’s SEMA in Las Vegas looks to be just as enticing, as Hyundai and their frequent technology partners at ARK Performance have announced that they’ve joined forces to create a stunning, 500 horsepower performance concept: the new Hyundai Genesis Solus that will officially premiere at the show. Based on the already impressive new Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the eye-catching Hyundai Genesis Solus is powered by a Hyundai 3.8L Lambda V6 that has been stroked out to 4.0L by ARK using their unique Brian Crower 4.0L Stroker Kit. With the addition of a custom Rotrex Supercharger System, also built by ARK Performance, an AEM Water/Methanol Injection Kit with VP Racing M1 Methanol, JE Pistons, and Brian Crower Rods and Crank, among other enhancements, the motor on the Solus can now turn out over 500 hp of taut muscle that’s channelled through a rear wheel drive system. In achieving this power boost, Ark Performance and Hyundai haven’t neglected handling, however, as an Ark Performance DT-P Coilover Suspension Kit, ARK Performance Strut Tower Brace, and Nitto NT05 tires round out some of the features that give the Hyundai Genesis Solus a racetrack-ready responsiveness. Lap3 Korea Custom ECU Tuning, Rockford Fosgate Complete PUNCH premium speakers, and an AiM Sports MXG Digital Color Display also go a long way toward creating a ride that is both smooth and filled with driver-friendly amenities. “The Genesis Coupe is the perfect platform for developing our performance product lineup,” said Kevin Bentley, Marketing and Sales Manager, ARK Performance, Inc when asked for a comment on the Solus, which is the tuner’s seventh consecutive build for SEMA. “Hyundai’s 3.8-liter engine is strong enough to handle all the extra power we’re now developing, and the chassis is well balanced and easy to modify, allowing us to create this lowered, aggressive stance while maintaining that clean look we’re going for.” As any car enthusiasts knows, the raw performance of any entrant is only half of the battle that occurs on the SEMA Show floor, as the look of specially tuned, upfitted vehicles is indeed what many visitors are attending to see. To create a distinct aesthetic for the project, ARK Performance installed their own Ad’ro/ARK ‘Solus’ Wide Body Kit, which gives the Hyundai Genesis Solus a low, more powerful stance, a bumper with large intakes and a carbon-fiber splitter, widened fenders, and extended side skirts that make the build reminiscent of the aquatic predators that are only found in the depths of the ocean. WardsAuto Names the Camaro V6 and Volt Voltec Among Top Ten Engines in the Industry BY RAY_FOX_LAKE ·DECEMBER 28,2015
  • 27. Page 27 of 29 The innovations introduced to the new Chevrolet Camaro (Gen 6) and Chevrolet Volt (Gen 2) for model year 2016 have not only enhanced their consumer appeal, but also won critical acclaim. Now WardsAuto has extended that trend of success, as it recently named the standard 3.6L V-6 on the 2016 Camaro and Voltec system on the 2016 Volt
  • 28. Page 28 of 29 to its list of 10 Best Engines, an achievement that reflects the efficiency, reliability, and power of both powertrains. For this year’s competition, which covered products for the 2016 model year, the editors at WardsAuto reviewed 31 separate engines from 11 automobile manufacturers. While they compared each engine on a one by one basis within its class according to baseline criteria such as power output and fuel efficiency, they also evaluated new technology and rewarded refinement and quality. After reviewing the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro LT’s V-6, the case for its conclusion in the Top 10 list became clear, as the 3.6L engine generates an SAE-certified 335 horsepower (250 kW) and 284 lb-ft of torque (385 Nm), making it the naturally aspirated V-6 with the highest specific output in its market segment. The Camaro LT V-6’s power envelope wasn’t its only winning trait, however, as the motor also features a number of efficiency-enhancing technologies, including direct injection and continuously variable valve timing. Its most impressive new technology, however, may be an Active Fuel Management system that deactivates two cylinders when the Camaro is being put through light driving conditions, then reactivates them when the driver calls upon more power. WardsAuto also rewarded the 3.6L V-6 on the 2016 Camaro LT for thoughtful touches that enhance the driver’s comfort, among which is an all-new cam drive system that makes the engine up to 4 dB quieter under low-load driving conditions than other powerplants in its class, including the benchmark Infiniti 3.7L V-6. Given its unique hybrid nature, the recognition for the 2016 Chevrolet Volt reflects upon its entire power generation system, as the powertrain uses an 84 hp, 1.5L Atkinson- cycle I-4 gas in conjunction with two permanent magnet electric motors (149 hp/111 kW and 74 hp/55 kW, respectively) and a new 18.4 kWh lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery system to yield either hybrid or pure electric operation. Though the total driving range for the Voltec system is more than 420 miles under one fueling and charge, drivers can expect to surpass 1,000 miles between trips to the gas station with regular charging. The system is also capable of traveling up to 53 miles on pure electric power, while it yields a combined EPA-estimated 42 MPG fuel economy when in hybrid operation. The improvements that have been made to the Gen 2 Chevrolet Volt have enhanced more than just efficiency, however, as the Voltec system is now up to 100 pounds lighter than its predecessor, while its ability to draw from both electric motors at once has led to a 19% increase in electric acceleration from 0 to 30 MPH and 7% increase in electric acceleration from 0 to 60 MPH, turning out relevant track times of 2.6 and 8.4 seconds, respectively. Changes to the Gen 2 Chevy Volt’s Li-Ion battery system also contributed to its recognition as, through a partnership with LG Chem, the engineers at General Motors were able to increase its storage capacity while decreasing the number of cells used
