2. Medical Technology
When any type of technology can be used to
medically enhance or save someone’s life it is
considered to be medical technology.
Medical technology varies from everyday items to
new technologies that have changed people’s lives.
There are more than 500,000 medical technologies
throughout the world that currently are available to
improve and extend people’s lives.
3. All these technologies contribute to living
longer, and healthier and are giving people the
power to contribute to society for longer.
This can prove to be both a positive and a negative as
the life expectancy of people keeps growing and
with it the population, however the livable space and
resources on earth is staying the same.
5. Importance of medical
technology
Some of the ways that medical technology have
helped improve the lives of people are the increase in
productivity at the work place, faster sources of
medical information, the ability to reach patients all
over the world, faster and more effective
treatments, and more accurate predictions of
medical trends.
6. The increase in
productivity at the
work placeThe way that new technologies have improved the productivity
at the work place is by the use of faster more efficient
resources.
An excellent example of this is electronic patient charts. Many
medical offices keep charts of their clients. This used to be done
with paper folders, but is now accessible through the click of a
button on the computer.
Many medical technologies have become faster and more
accurate, helping medical facilities to diagnose and help their
clients fast are more accurately the first time. This helps to
reduce the population in medical facilities and emergency
rooms as people are in the actual facilities for less time.
7. Faster sources of
medical information
The Internet has become a great medical tool for
health professionals. Health professionals are able to
clarify and find information at the click of a button.
8. The ability to reach
patients all over the
world
The enhancement of medical technologies has
enabled technologies to be distributed around the
world to places they could not reach in the past.
9. Faster and more
effective treatments
This also helps to minimize the traffic in health care
facilities by having fewer recall visits and helping the
clients properly the first time.
10. More accurate
predictions of medical
trends
Due to the upgrades in medical technologies health
professionals can rely more on their equipment to
give them faster, accurate readings and treatments.
11. Advances in medical
technology
Some new and exciting advances in medical technology
are prosthetic limbs and functioning organs.
Scientists are taking stem cells and using them to grow
actual human body parts and organs.
When an organ becomes damaged small pieces of tissue
are taken to grow a new organ outside of the body in a
controlled area. Because the organ was grown from the
bodies own tissue it is not rejected by the body when
transplanted, as the body can tell it is its own. Rejecting
the organs is a major complication in organ
transplants, and if creating clones for the organs can
eliminate this it will greatly impact the survival rate of the
organ transplant patients.
12. Research in muscle and brain activity has lead to the
development of prosthetic limbs that can be
controlled by the mind.
This is an amazing development as amputees may
soon be able to carry out their lives just as before. It
will look very similar to them having a real limb, as it
will be functioning just as a normal limb.
13. Effects on society
There are both good and bad effects of the
technological advances in the field of medicine.
Some of the positive effects I have previously talked
about in the power point include, the increase in the
life expectancy, overall health care and improved
quality in life.
14. Effects on society
Some controversial issues with new technology are that it
will continue to become more and more expensive as the
technology becomes more advanced. This may make it
difficult for the people who cannot afford the care and
create a greater divide in society.
Another controversial issue with medical advancements is
that with the rising life expectancy of people the overall
population is going to rise as well. The earth however is
not creating more habitable places for people to live or
more resources to sustain us.
As we are getting closer to the ability to create human
parts we become closer to creating human beings, and
this can be controversial and seen as “playing God”.
15. Conclusion
In conclusion medical technology has created many
cures and controversies within its advancements. It
has become a very important aspect to the way our
health care is provided, and continues to improve it
everyday. There is a fine line that we must watch as a
society to ensure we do not misuse our newfound
powers and abuse them.
