The GERMI institute has launched a new Solar Potential app for Android smartphones. The app provides maps of India and 3 states showing the solar power generation potential at any location based on 10 years of weather and satellite data. It allows users to input latitude and longitude coordinates to see the annual and monthly solar energy potential. Areas with high altitude and lower temperature like Leh have the highest potential, while Northeast India has the lowest. The app will help solar developers identify good locations and reduce project costs over consultants. GERMI plans to add more features and launch a solar thermal potential version in the next 2-3 months.

Knowingthe potential of generatingsolar power
at your locationis nowmucheasier. By usingan
androidapp, developedby the Gujarat Energy
Research&Management Institute (GERMI)
commonmancanknowthe solar potential at his
location.
The Solar Potential appwill be muchuseful to the
solar developers andindustrialists to identify the
locationto set uptheir solar power installations.
Developedby JayminGajjar, aresearchassociate
at the institute, the apphas solar photo-voltaic
(PV)mapof the entire country. The maps have
beencreatedbasedonthe 10-year weather data
andsatellite databasedongeographical factors
suchas radiation, elevation, humidity among
others.
Launchingthe app, T Harinarayana, Director,
GERMI, said, "By providingthe latitude and
longitude of any locationwithinIndia, one can
knowthe annual andmonthly energy generation
potential. This will helpreduce time for
executingaproject andsave additional costs of
consultants to knowthe solar energy potential."
The app, shows colourful maps of Indiaandthree
states namely, Gujarat, AndhraPradeshand
Telangana. "The highest solar potential is inLeh
areaof JammuandKashmir, while lowest
potential is inNorth-East region. InGujarat, we have foundhighest potential at Junagadharound
Girnar, while lowest potential is inNorthernKutch," saidHarinarayana.
Accordingto Harinarayana, at higher altitude andlower temperature, solar power generationpotential
is highest. "Higher the altitude, lower is the temperature, therefore higher will be the solar power
generationpotential. At 25 degrees temperature, solar PV panels generate optimal power."
He saidthat the dataandmethodof mappingthe solar power potential have beenverifiedby the
international standards.
"There is ahuge interest fromindustries to set upsolar projects at their locations. Also, with
government's focus for roof-topsolar projects, this appwill helppeople knowabout potential intheir
areawithout puttingadditional cost. There will be upgrades of this appandwe will addmore features
also," saidGajjar addingthat the appcanbe downloadedfromthe Google Play onanandroid
smartphone.
The institute is also lookingat launchingthe solar thermal maps withthe existingapp, so as to get the
potential datafor solar thermal projects as well. The solar thermal appwill be ready inthe next 2-3
months.
