1. Previously worked in IBM as a Senior Consultant and Project Manager
in business consulting services for 7+ years. Experienced in 15+ local
and regional projects.
– Clients include Education Bureau, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, HKSAR Efficiency
Unit, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Hong Kong Airport Authority, MTR
Corporation Limited, KCRC Corporation, Chanel S.A., Cathay Pacific Airway, BankCorporation Limited, KCRC Corporation, Chanel S.A., Cathay Pacific Airway, Bank
of China, Hong Kong Jockey Club, etc.
2. Service leader in IBM to drive a 9-month volunteering service with

An e-Learning Story
An e-Learning Story
An aided primary school established in the 70’s:
a) 3000 sq. meter
b) 24 rooms with library, 3 special rooms, 3 activity rooms, MMLC with 40 legacy
computers, indoor/ outdoor playground, school hall, etc
c) 6 class levels with 18 classes
• each class with 20 to 35 students• each class with 20 to 35 students
• Total 450 students
d) 35 teachers with 80% over 10 years exp
e) 5 – 10% students with special education needs
f) School internal network setup in 1998 with major / minor upgrade in 2005
g) Principal foresees a new wave of eLearning is coming but some students (5 -
10%) even do not have a decent computer and Internet access
• 20% computer bought 7 years ago and Internet access that could not support
watching YouTube HD videos
Principal’s Challenges
Mr. Principal:
e-Learning is the must-go direction. Where is my finish line?
When to reach such line?
Expensive network infrastructure upgrade is a must. Is big-
bang infra upgrade really “hassle-free”?bang infra upgrade really “hassle-free”?
How other schools reach their finish line?
(Ask a young IT-savvy teacher to answer these questions…)
We need to buy some mobile devices to kick-start. But
should I buy mobile learning devices for each student?
Will parent support BYOD?
(Test water by talking to a few parents in PTA…)
Teacher’s Challenges
Mr. Teacher:
I worked here only for 5 years. I am assigned to kick-off eLearning
for the whole school with 80% (~30) teachers worked 10+ years
in this school.
How to have these teachers to adopt eLearning in their class
within two years? Seems mission impossible.
What is my role? IT admin? Change agent? CIO?
(Ask a star teacher friend or EDB second teacher in COE…)
Unsolved Problems
The problems are:
1. A teacher is a teacher. Usually he/ she is not an IT architect
nor a consultant…
2. BYOD is the solution for 1-to-1 e-Learning. However,2. BYOD is the solution for 1-to-1 e-Learning. However,
resistance from parents is usually huge…
3. Asking expert is a good start. But such star teacher is usually
super busy in his/ her own school. Do not expect him/ her
can work side by side in your school…

  • 2. Bio of Jeff Ng 1. Previously worked in IBM as a Senior Consultant and Project Manager in business consulting services for 7+ years. Experienced in 15+ local and regional projects. – Clients include Education Bureau, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, HKSAR Efficiency Unit, Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Hong Kong Airport Authority, MTR Corporation Limited, KCRC Corporation, Chanel S.A., Cathay Pacific Airway, BankCorporation Limited, KCRC Corporation, Chanel S.A., Cathay Pacific Airway, Bank of China, Hong Kong Jockey Club, etc. 2. Service leader in IBM to drive a 9-month volunteering service with 40+ colleagues. Team won global award from IBM in 2012. 3. The only successful applicant from Hong Kong for IBM’s Centennial Grant for community service. 4. Master in marketing (on Dean’s list). 5. Currently a Program Manager in WebOrganic to lead K12 practice. 6. Son of a secondary school teacher. 7. Father of a 11-month-old baby boy.

  • 9. Our Point of View (PoV) on e-Learning Learning happens any where, any time, and any direction We envisage an e-Learning solution will enable learning: a. In-side and out-side classroom / campus b. In different subjects of different class levels c. During and beyond school time d. Fit into school-based curriculum e. Support on-line and off-line mode of learning School Parent Technology Publisher Too many hurdles… A long lasting battle…

An e-Learning Story An aided primary school established in the 70’s: a) 3000 sq. meter b) 24 rooms with library, 3 special rooms, 3 activity rooms, MMLC with 40 legacy computers, indoor/ outdoor playground, school hall, etc c) 6 class levels with 18 classes • each class with 20 to 35 students• each class with 20 to 35 students • Total 450 students d) 35 teachers with 80% over 10 years exp e) 5 – 10% students with special education needs f) School internal network setup in 1998 with major / minor upgrade in 2005 g) Principal foresees a new wave of eLearning is coming but some students (5 - 10%) even do not have a decent computer and Internet access • 20% computer bought 7 years ago and Internet access that could not support watching YouTube HD videos
  • 12. Principal’s Challenges Mr. Principal: e-Learning is the must-go direction. Where is my finish line? When to reach such line? Expensive network infrastructure upgrade is a must. Is big- bang infra upgrade really “hassle-free”?bang infra upgrade really “hassle-free”? How other schools reach their finish line? (Ask a young IT-savvy teacher to answer these questions…) We need to buy some mobile devices to kick-start. But should I buy mobile learning devices for each student? Will parent support BYOD? (Test water by talking to a few parents in PTA…)
  • 13. Teacher’s Challenges Mr. Teacher: I worked here only for 5 years. I am assigned to kick-off eLearning for the whole school with 80% (~30) teachers worked 10+ years in this school. How to have these teachers to adopt eLearning in their class within two years? Seems mission impossible. What is my role? IT admin? Change agent? CIO? (Ask a star teacher friend or EDB second teacher in COE…)
  • 14. Unsolved Problems The problems are: 1. A teacher is a teacher. Usually he/ she is not an IT architect nor a consultant… 2. BYOD is the solution for 1-to-1 e-Learning. However,2. BYOD is the solution for 1-to-1 e-Learning. However, resistance from parents is usually huge… 3. Asking expert is a good start. But such star teacher is usually super busy in his/ her own school. Do not expect him/ her can work side by side in your school…

  • 16. Infrastructure Upgrade Big-Bang vs By Phase Big-Bang: 1. “Hassle-free” for the designed end-product, e.g. network. 2. Know when to reach destination. By Phase: 1.
