The 18th Century Boateng Saber
Currently, this 18th-century sword is recognized as the most
expensive sword in the world. It originally sold for $5.5 million,
and then two years later it sold for a whopping $7.7 million in
2008. The sword was made during the Qianlong rule between
1736 to 1795. The s-shaped black design is equipped with a fitted
jade handle, and the blade is decorated with inlaid gold, copper,
and silver.
If the said sword had cost $7.7 million in 2008,
how much does it probably cost this year?

The kampilan also known as talong is a type of single-edged sword,
traditionally used by various ethnic groups in the Philippine archipelago. It has
a distinct profile, with the tapered blade being much broader and thinner at the
point than at its base, sometimes with a protruding spikelet along the flat side
of the tip. The design of the pommel varies between ethnic groups, but it
usually depicts either a buaya (crocodile), a bakunawa (Dragon)
a kalaw (hornbill), or a kakatua (cockatoo).
"Kampilan" is the term most commonly used for the sword in
the Tagalog, Ilocano and Visayan languages. It simply means "sword". It is
known by other names in other ethnic groups in the Philippines
including Kapampangan talibong or talibon (not to be confused with the
Visayan talibon); Maranao kifing; Iranun parang kampilan;
and Tboli tok and kafila

Read the story below and discover the significance of “The Bolo” in the flow of the story.
THE BOLO by Loreto Paras-Sulit
Clara and her younger sister Sita are in the middle of a serious
predicament. They are poor and starving. Not only that, Clara is weak and sick.
She has already suffered due to her husband Ramon’s passing and to their
unborn child as well. If Clara and Sita are not going to get much-needed
sustenance, there's a possibility that they might starve to death. At this
moment, they realize that the most viable solution to their problem is to sell
one of their most prized possessions - a bolo with a handle made of ivory, jade,
and gold. The bolo is a family heirloom that has been passed from generation to
generation.

When the idea to sell the bolo came up, Clara was very
hesitant and didn't want to sell it. She was also holding on to the
hope that her late husband's family will send them money to
help them. But time is running out and she is gravely sick and
weak. Still, she didn't want to let go of the prized bolo.
IF YOU WERE CLARA, WOULD YOU NOT LET
GO OF THE BOLO?WHY?

Due to desperation, Sita snatched the bolo from her sister's
weak and helpless hands and promptly headed to Old Hison's
Store to sell it. The storekeeper took advantage of Sita's
desperation and bought the bolo at a price which was way lower
than what it's actually worth. Sita is aware she's being taken
advantage of but she had no choice. She sold the bolo for a
meager 50 pesos.
WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT THE
STOREKEEPER?

Before she can leave Old Hison's Store, another customer
named Oscar bought the bolo from the storekeeper for a much
higher price. Oscar then gave the bolo back to Sita, reminding
her of the value of such possessions. And that such possessions
should be appreciated and not easily given away. Sita accepted
the bolo and returned the 50 pesos to the storekeeper telling
him, "Here is your money and I shall keep the bolo".
HOW MUCH MONEY DID THE STOREKEEPER GAIN AFTER
OSCAR BOUGHT IT AGAIN FROM HIM 10 TIMES THE
AMOUNT GIVEN TO SITA?

What is Marxist Criticism?
When you read a piece of literature, you’re not just reading
a story, but you’re getting a glimpse into a different culture and
society. So what is that society like? Is it like yours? Do the rich
and powerful have all the control? And what even inspired the
author to create this society in the first place? These are all sorts
of questions asked in Marxist Criticism, which reviews a work of
literature in terms of the society it presents.

Marxist gets its name form Karl Marx, the
German philosopher who wrote The Communist
Manifesto. In it, Marx and co-author Friedrich Engels
argue that all of history is about the struggle
between the haves and have-nots. They predicted
that one day, the proletariat or the have-nots, will
throw off the oppression of the bourgeoisie or those
with means and power. In other words, Marxist
Criticism is a careful reader or viewer who keeps in
mind issues of power and money.

to show how social class affects a story
to give the poor, invisible, or

to evaluate whether class and inequality
is a driving force in our society
