Evaluation question 1

J
By Jessica Fox
Forms within a music video are the individual elements that
construct text. The forms within a music video mainly consist of
camerawork, sound, editing and mise en scene
You need to ensure that when you are creating a music video
that the forms are being included within your media project.
This is because you need to meet people’s expectations of
what a music video is going to be like. For example people
expect a music video to be the length of a song which would on
be about 4-5 minutes long.
Whereas they would expect a drama series to be bout 30
minutes- 1 hour long. But then they would expect a film to be
around about 2 hours long. If you don’t meet the audiences
expectations then they may not understand what’s going on.
You can’t have a music video that’s half an hour long.
Within my music video there are a variety
of different camera shots that I have used.
I have mainly used mid-shot footage so
that it is clear for the audience to see all
three of the girls who are featured within
my music video.
From the images you can see one of the
mid shots that is in my music video. I think
that this is a good shot to use because you
can see all three of the girls in a clear shot
and you can also see the outfits that they
are wearing as well.
It’s good that this kind of shot shows what
they girls are wearing because then the
audience can see how their outfits change
throughout the video. Even though they
change the clothes are still keeping in with
the retro kind of feel and the genre of the
song which is to do with the 60’s but has
been redone so that it has more of a
modern feel.
The other kind of shot that I have
used within my music video is the
close up shot. This is because in my
video Deanna is the main character
and the other two are just her backing
dancers.
This is what I wanted to try and get
across by doing more close ups of
Deanna when she was performing to
show that she is the main character in
this video.
Also by adding in the close ups it
breaks up the long mid shots that are
in my video. By adding a bit of pace
into my video was to try and make it
more interesting for the audience
instead of just a performance based
video that just stays on the same
shots all the time.
Another form that my music video uses is the use of Mise
En Scene. This includes costumes, props, editing, hair
and makeup. My video uses a variety of these different
features which what makes my video look effective and is
something that would actually interest the audience.
The costumes, hair and makeup that the girls are wearing
in my video is to represent the genre of the music. The
props are to add that extra bit of detail during the video.
Then the editing s done to try and create a video that
looks effective and that it would actually interest people
when they watch it.
There are a variety of different outfits that are used
throughout the video. The clothes are important to
my video simply because the clothing represent the
kind of genre that I’m getting across in my video.
These images shown to the right you can see the
three different outfits that Deanna wore throughout
the video. The main outfit she wore was the red
dress with hearts, this is because the hearts can link
with the paper heart props that also feature within
this video.
Then the other outfits she wore were a blue floaty
skirt with a long sleeved polka dot shirt. This kind of
outfit looks smart but it’s also the kind of style that
you would see people wearing in the olden days as
well as seeing some people wearing that kind of
style these days as well.
Then the last outfit she was wearing was a white
collared top with a polka dot skirt. I’ve got her to
wear these skater skirts simply because they are the
kind of style women use to wear but they are an
item them females still wear nowadays as well.
The background girls also needed to wear
clothes that were similar to this kind of style. This
is why at the start of the video they are in dark
dresses that have got collars on with black tights.
This is because I wanted them to wear dark
colours because then Deanna would stand out in
her red dress a lot more.
Then the second outfit that these girls wore were
black skater skirts with a white long sleeved shirt
that have black polka dots on them. I liked these
outfits because in the image to the right you can
see how their tops are the opposite to each other.
Deanna is wearing a black top with white dots
and the two girls are wearing white tops with
black dots. Yet again I’ve done the outfits like this
so that Deanna stands out from the other two and
the audience will be able to see clearly that
Deanna is the main focus in this video.
Hair and makeup is an important part of my video simply
because the way the girls have their hair and makeup is to
try and create a 60’s style with a modern day twist.
The makeup represents the 60’s simply because by doing
research I was able to see that women in the 60’s mainly
wore eye makeup and red lipstick. This is why in the video
Deanna and the other two girls have all got eyeliner on
their eyes with the big flick at the end as well as bright red
lipstick. This is also why I’ve included close ups within my
video so that it’s easier for the audience to see the kind of
makeup that the girls are wearing.
During the 60’s girls wore their hair in a style that was
known as ‘the bee hive’ where they would have some hair
up and some down. But the pony tail part would be really
high up to try and create an effect (like the image shown of
Adele on the right).
Instead of doing that kind of style I kept with the some up
and some down but I didn’t give the hair a lot of volume on
the top of the head because I went for the kind of styles
girls wear their hair nowadays. But I tied a ribbon round
her ponytail just to add that extra bit of detail to her style.
Another form that was used within my music video was Editing. In order to edit my
video and to put all of my shots together I used a piece of software called ‘Final Cut
Pro’. The bottom right image shows the layout of this specific type of software.
This software allowed me to put in the shots that I wanted to use into my video. I
could also put a variety of different effects on each individual shot and I could also
move the shots into place so that the lip syncing matched the same time as they
were being sung in the song that would be playing over the shots. In the bottom left
image you can see all the different shots that you can put into the video. Then in the
right corner at the bottom you can see what it looks like when you have put all the
shots together to create a music video.
There are a variety of different props that have been used throughout the whole of
my video. At the start Deanna is holding a clapboard. I wanted this object to feature
in my music video because I thought that having it in the first show would emphasis
to the audience that this was the start of the video. Also, by zooming out on the
clapboard you can also get a sense of the scenery and who will be featuring in the
music video.
Towards the end of the music video there’s a part where the artists sing ‘yeah, yeah
yeah’ but it’s said with a quick pace. It was hard to get Deanna to say this in time with
the words so in the end we decided to get a piece of paper for her to hold which said
‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’ on it.
Then the last props that were used throughout the video were the
paper hearts that were all different colours. These were used in
shots such as Deanna lying on the floor (as you can see in the top
right corner).
They were also used in other simple shots such as Deanna just
holding the heart and looking into the camera as well as a close up
of tearing the heart up. Then the last shot includes the paper hearts
again but this time it’s Deanna chucking them in the air to create
more of an effect.
Conventions are the aspects within a music video that
people would always expect to be featured in the video.
They are recognised in a way of doing something which is
to do with content, form and style.
The main conventions that people expect to see in a
music video are:
 The video is the same length as the song
 Band/artist are presented in a specific way
 Editing also needs to be clear throughout the video
This convention is shown throughout the whole of my video
because I have tried to make Deanna come across as a girl
who’s into fashion from the 60’s but can still put her modern
twist on it.
I have also tried to get this style to come across on the two girls
who are in the background to try and get the 60’s feeling
across more to the audience.
My video meets this convention simply because I think it’s
important for a video to include iconography somehow within
the video. This is because when you watch a video you want
people to remember that artist.
An example of iconography would be Michael Jackson and his
style in his videos with his hats and white gloves. This is the
kind of idea that I’ve tried to get across in my video with
Deanna having her olden style with a modern day twist to it as
well.
Another convention that my video uses is the use of close
ups. I think that the use of close ups is important for my
video because I’ve ensure that I’ve include close ups of
Deanna performing.
This is because by doing this is will create her star
identification and will show the audience that she is the
main performer in this video.
Another reason why it’s important for my video to use this
convention is simply because you want the audience to
connect with the video.
This can only be done by the use of close ups so the
audience can connect with the star in the video because it
looks like they are actually performing to whoever’s
watching the video.
My video challenges the use of voyeurism simply because I
haven’t portrayed the performers in my video in a way that
some artists are in their video.
By this I mean that I haven’t made my artists dress or dance in
a specific way to widen the audience for those people who
wouldn’t originally buy the artists music.
Instead my artists have been portrayed in a way that makes
them look innocent and they are trying to get their emotion
about being in love with someone who has moved on across
through their performance.
Because this is what I wanted to try and get across in my video
I haven’t used voyeurism because I chose the outfits that the
three girls would wear in the video very carefully. Instead of
trying to use this convention I was more interested in using
their style to represent the genre of the music video instead of
trying to widen the audience of my video.
My video uses this convention through the use of tempo of the
video and pitch.
Tempo – I have tried to add a steady speed to my music video
because as my video is just performance I didn’t want to come
across as boring. So by having a steady tempo between the
change of shots and having different backgrounds and outfits I
thought this would add more interest to my video when people
were watching it. But I’ve done this in a way that also fits in with
the time of the music.
Pitch – The music I have used within my video starts of quiet
for the first 5 seconds then a nice beat comes in and stays
throughout the whole of the song. This is why I have done
closed ups of each individual girls faces for the quiet bit and
then when the pitch changes to high that’s when the
performance side starts to kick in.
This is the main convention that I have ensured that my video
uses throughout the video. There are some areas of my video
where I’ve tried to show in a visual way the lyrics that are being
played. An example of this is when the lyrics say ‘change of
heart’ and you see the two girls exchanging their hearts to
Deanna.
Then at the end of the video there’s a part where the artist
sings ‘yeah, yeah, yeah’ really quick. Because it was hard to
get a good shot of Deanna miming this in time I decided to
write those words on paper so that when they came up in the
song the camera captures Deanna holding this paper with the
lyrics on them.
But there’s a variety of different parts of this song where I have
shown the lyrics being sung in a visual way. I thought that by
doing this would make the performance side more interesting
and sometimes it’s always nice to see the lyrics that are being
sung in a visual way as well.
Throughout my video I have tried to represent the style of the
song through the appearances of the people who will feature in
the video.
The genre of my video is kind of retro/ old style but with a
modern day twist. This is because the song ‘Foolish Little Girl’
is an old song but I chose the redone version of the song which
was done by Dionne Bromfield. So because she’s a more
modern day artist I thought that I would try and get this through
in my video.
The clothes that the girls are wearing through the video
represent the genre because I used the research that I had
done into old styles and tried to add the information I had found
into my video.
I also look into the makeup that was in fashion during the 60’s
which was mainly pale faces but a lot of eye makeup on. This
is why I also use a variety of different close ups in my video so
that it is easy for the audience to see the stars eye makeup

Evaluation question 1

  • 2. Forms within a music video are the individual elements that construct text. The forms within a music video mainly consist of camerawork, sound, editing and mise en scene You need to ensure that when you are creating a music video that the forms are being included within your media project. This is because you need to meet people’s expectations of what a music video is going to be like. For example people expect a music video to be the length of a song which would on be about 4-5 minutes long. Whereas they would expect a drama series to be bout 30 minutes- 1 hour long. But then they would expect a film to be around about 2 hours long. If you don’t meet the audiences expectations then they may not understand what’s going on. You can’t have a music video that’s half an hour long.
  • 3. Within my music video there are a variety of different camera shots that I have used. I have mainly used mid-shot footage so that it is clear for the audience to see all three of the girls who are featured within my music video. From the images you can see one of the mid shots that is in my music video. I think that this is a good shot to use because you can see all three of the girls in a clear shot and you can also see the outfits that they are wearing as well. It’s good that this kind of shot shows what they girls are wearing because then the audience can see how their outfits change throughout the video. Even though they change the clothes are still keeping in with the retro kind of feel and the genre of the song which is to do with the 60’s but has been redone so that it has more of a modern feel.
  • 4. The other kind of shot that I have used within my music video is the close up shot. This is because in my video Deanna is the main character and the other two are just her backing dancers. This is what I wanted to try and get across by doing more close ups of Deanna when she was performing to show that she is the main character in this video. Also by adding in the close ups it breaks up the long mid shots that are in my video. By adding a bit of pace into my video was to try and make it more interesting for the audience instead of just a performance based video that just stays on the same shots all the time.
  • 5. Another form that my music video uses is the use of Mise En Scene. This includes costumes, props, editing, hair and makeup. My video uses a variety of these different features which what makes my video look effective and is something that would actually interest the audience. The costumes, hair and makeup that the girls are wearing in my video is to represent the genre of the music. The props are to add that extra bit of detail during the video. Then the editing s done to try and create a video that looks effective and that it would actually interest people when they watch it.
  • 6. There are a variety of different outfits that are used throughout the video. The clothes are important to my video simply because the clothing represent the kind of genre that I’m getting across in my video. These images shown to the right you can see the three different outfits that Deanna wore throughout the video. The main outfit she wore was the red dress with hearts, this is because the hearts can link with the paper heart props that also feature within this video. Then the other outfits she wore were a blue floaty skirt with a long sleeved polka dot shirt. This kind of outfit looks smart but it’s also the kind of style that you would see people wearing in the olden days as well as seeing some people wearing that kind of style these days as well. Then the last outfit she was wearing was a white collared top with a polka dot skirt. I’ve got her to wear these skater skirts simply because they are the kind of style women use to wear but they are an item them females still wear nowadays as well.
  • 7. The background girls also needed to wear clothes that were similar to this kind of style. This is why at the start of the video they are in dark dresses that have got collars on with black tights. This is because I wanted them to wear dark colours because then Deanna would stand out in her red dress a lot more. Then the second outfit that these girls wore were black skater skirts with a white long sleeved shirt that have black polka dots on them. I liked these outfits because in the image to the right you can see how their tops are the opposite to each other. Deanna is wearing a black top with white dots and the two girls are wearing white tops with black dots. Yet again I’ve done the outfits like this so that Deanna stands out from the other two and the audience will be able to see clearly that Deanna is the main focus in this video.
  • 8. Hair and makeup is an important part of my video simply because the way the girls have their hair and makeup is to try and create a 60’s style with a modern day twist. The makeup represents the 60’s simply because by doing research I was able to see that women in the 60’s mainly wore eye makeup and red lipstick. This is why in the video Deanna and the other two girls have all got eyeliner on their eyes with the big flick at the end as well as bright red lipstick. This is also why I’ve included close ups within my video so that it’s easier for the audience to see the kind of makeup that the girls are wearing. During the 60’s girls wore their hair in a style that was known as ‘the bee hive’ where they would have some hair up and some down. But the pony tail part would be really high up to try and create an effect (like the image shown of Adele on the right). Instead of doing that kind of style I kept with the some up and some down but I didn’t give the hair a lot of volume on the top of the head because I went for the kind of styles girls wear their hair nowadays. But I tied a ribbon round her ponytail just to add that extra bit of detail to her style.
  • 9. Another form that was used within my music video was Editing. In order to edit my video and to put all of my shots together I used a piece of software called ‘Final Cut Pro’. The bottom right image shows the layout of this specific type of software. This software allowed me to put in the shots that I wanted to use into my video. I could also put a variety of different effects on each individual shot and I could also move the shots into place so that the lip syncing matched the same time as they were being sung in the song that would be playing over the shots. In the bottom left image you can see all the different shots that you can put into the video. Then in the right corner at the bottom you can see what it looks like when you have put all the shots together to create a music video.
  • 10. There are a variety of different props that have been used throughout the whole of my video. At the start Deanna is holding a clapboard. I wanted this object to feature in my music video because I thought that having it in the first show would emphasis to the audience that this was the start of the video. Also, by zooming out on the clapboard you can also get a sense of the scenery and who will be featuring in the music video. Towards the end of the music video there’s a part where the artists sing ‘yeah, yeah yeah’ but it’s said with a quick pace. It was hard to get Deanna to say this in time with the words so in the end we decided to get a piece of paper for her to hold which said ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’ on it. Then the last props that were used throughout the video were the paper hearts that were all different colours. These were used in shots such as Deanna lying on the floor (as you can see in the top right corner). They were also used in other simple shots such as Deanna just holding the heart and looking into the camera as well as a close up of tearing the heart up. Then the last shot includes the paper hearts again but this time it’s Deanna chucking them in the air to create more of an effect.
  • 11. Conventions are the aspects within a music video that people would always expect to be featured in the video. They are recognised in a way of doing something which is to do with content, form and style. The main conventions that people expect to see in a music video are:  The video is the same length as the song  Band/artist are presented in a specific way  Editing also needs to be clear throughout the video
  • 12. This convention is shown throughout the whole of my video because I have tried to make Deanna come across as a girl who’s into fashion from the 60’s but can still put her modern twist on it. I have also tried to get this style to come across on the two girls who are in the background to try and get the 60’s feeling across more to the audience. My video meets this convention simply because I think it’s important for a video to include iconography somehow within the video. This is because when you watch a video you want people to remember that artist. An example of iconography would be Michael Jackson and his style in his videos with his hats and white gloves. This is the kind of idea that I’ve tried to get across in my video with Deanna having her olden style with a modern day twist to it as well.
  • 13. Another convention that my video uses is the use of close ups. I think that the use of close ups is important for my video because I’ve ensure that I’ve include close ups of Deanna performing. This is because by doing this is will create her star identification and will show the audience that she is the main performer in this video. Another reason why it’s important for my video to use this convention is simply because you want the audience to connect with the video. This can only be done by the use of close ups so the audience can connect with the star in the video because it looks like they are actually performing to whoever’s watching the video.
  • 14. My video challenges the use of voyeurism simply because I haven’t portrayed the performers in my video in a way that some artists are in their video. By this I mean that I haven’t made my artists dress or dance in a specific way to widen the audience for those people who wouldn’t originally buy the artists music. Instead my artists have been portrayed in a way that makes them look innocent and they are trying to get their emotion about being in love with someone who has moved on across through their performance. Because this is what I wanted to try and get across in my video I haven’t used voyeurism because I chose the outfits that the three girls would wear in the video very carefully. Instead of trying to use this convention I was more interested in using their style to represent the genre of the music video instead of trying to widen the audience of my video.
  • 15. My video uses this convention through the use of tempo of the video and pitch. Tempo – I have tried to add a steady speed to my music video because as my video is just performance I didn’t want to come across as boring. So by having a steady tempo between the change of shots and having different backgrounds and outfits I thought this would add more interest to my video when people were watching it. But I’ve done this in a way that also fits in with the time of the music. Pitch – The music I have used within my video starts of quiet for the first 5 seconds then a nice beat comes in and stays throughout the whole of the song. This is why I have done closed ups of each individual girls faces for the quiet bit and then when the pitch changes to high that’s when the performance side starts to kick in.
  • 16. This is the main convention that I have ensured that my video uses throughout the video. There are some areas of my video where I’ve tried to show in a visual way the lyrics that are being played. An example of this is when the lyrics say ‘change of heart’ and you see the two girls exchanging their hearts to Deanna. Then at the end of the video there’s a part where the artist sings ‘yeah, yeah, yeah’ really quick. Because it was hard to get a good shot of Deanna miming this in time I decided to write those words on paper so that when they came up in the song the camera captures Deanna holding this paper with the lyrics on them. But there’s a variety of different parts of this song where I have shown the lyrics being sung in a visual way. I thought that by doing this would make the performance side more interesting and sometimes it’s always nice to see the lyrics that are being sung in a visual way as well.
  • 17. Throughout my video I have tried to represent the style of the song through the appearances of the people who will feature in the video. The genre of my video is kind of retro/ old style but with a modern day twist. This is because the song ‘Foolish Little Girl’ is an old song but I chose the redone version of the song which was done by Dionne Bromfield. So because she’s a more modern day artist I thought that I would try and get this through in my video. The clothes that the girls are wearing through the video represent the genre because I used the research that I had done into old styles and tried to add the information I had found into my video. I also look into the makeup that was in fashion during the 60’s which was mainly pale faces but a lot of eye makeup on. This is why I also use a variety of different close ups in my video so that it is easy for the audience to see the stars eye makeup
