2. WELCOME
We are delighted to introduce you to talkUBUNTU, the first South African social media platform and
program for study- and career development. talkUBUNTU helps students to make informed and
motivated choices about their future.
Did you know that almost half all of students in South African universities and colleges drop out or
switch courses before completion of their studies? Studies show similar figures for virtually all
countries around the world, with hardly a noticeable difference between countries from the
developed or developing world. Close to fifty percent of all students, and in particular high school
scholars around the world, tell the same story; they choose the wrong studies, courses and subjects,
which result in a staggeringly high drop-out and switching rate.
Did you know that this drop-out and switching rate costs society billions of Rand’s, not to mention
the cost of personal disappointment, discouragement and personal suffering? A study in The
Netherlands, with a population of a mere 17 million people, show an annual loss of close to Fifty
Billion Rand resulting from wrong study- and career choices, an inevitable precursor to early drop-
out and high switching rates!
No similar studies have been undertaken in South Africa, however statistics relative to the Dutch
experience can reasonably be assumed. The simple truth is that South African students, not unlike
their international peers, are the victims of either poor or hardly sufficient personal-, study- and
career orientation and coaching.
talkUBUNTU puts the student’s study- and career plans at the center of education. talkUBUNTU
empowers, stimulates and motivates the student to explore his/her own identity (who am I, what are
my skills, what are my future ambitions) and to work towards a motivated career identity.

4. As young people move towards adulthood, they face a
range of challenges which require them to make difficult
life and learning choices. They need help to understand
their options and to make informed decisions, especially
as we increase the range of options available to young
people.
A career identity is a structure of meanings in which the individual links his own motiviation, interests
and competencies with acceptable career roles. Our role is to help the student towards finding and
understanding his or her own set of talents and abilities and to match those with realistic future ideals.
WHO AM I?
WHAT ARE MY TALENTS AND SKILLS?
WHAT ARE MY FUTURE IDEALS?
DISCOVER THE WORLD.
6. The development of a career identity takes place in the
context of society, hence talkUBUNTU, a learning village
where education and labour meets.
The learning environment is a place for exploration. Students embark on an exciting journey towards
self-discovery and an exploration of the real world. The gap between learning and working is erased.
7. Social media learning platform with an integrated digital learning
environment uniquely designed for study- and career orientation
Connecting the classroom to the workplace; allowing the free-flow
of all career-oriented knowledge between parties
Connecting the classroom to tertiary education and training
organizations for closer collaboration.
Connecting students to mentors as well as co-learners from
different learning organisations for peer to peer education in a
world without borders.
Facilitating programs and formats for high schools to enable
effective study- and career orientation
“Bringing the world into the classroom” to facilitate contextual
learning.
8. The talkUBUNTU system (platform, educational tools and
program's) empowers young learners to explore beyond the
boundaries of the classroom and across national borders. It
allows students, parents, teachers and mentors to share,
exchange and gain information and knowledge relating to
career-and-life-orientation, without any limitations.
10. An important part of study- and career development is to
empower young people to play an active role in society.
Young people are powerful agents of change and have a lot of
responsibility in fostering understanding and peace through
creating awareness. talkUBUNTU encourages social
participation and awareness by inviting relevant and credible
social and developmental organisations to the classroom.
talkUBUNTU promotes mutual understanding across racial,
cultural, religious, political and geographical divides by linking
social, cultural and developmental organisations to the
classroom.
11. Our learning environment not only brings the world into the
classroom, but connects schools throughout the African
continent and the rest of the world for collaboration.
