CRIMINAL JUSTICE
STUDIES
Bachelor’s Degree Completion
Program:
Alfred University –
SUNY Orange
Community College
Partnership
Why a Bachelor’s Degree in CJS?
Graduate studies in law, criminal
justice administration, or related
social science disciplines require a
Bachelor’s Degree.
The Bachelor’s Degree is the
entry-level requirement for most
careers in criminal justice.
Entry level careers with
state and federal agencies
require a Bachelor’s
Degree.
.
Jobs in nonprofit agencies providing
services to various constituencies
such as immigrants, at risk youth,
crime victims, and so on will likely
require a Bachelor’s Degree.
Eventual promotions or advancements in
the ranks within a criminal justice agency
typically require a Bachelor’s Degree.

Designed with the Non-Traditional Student in Mind
• Students who are unable to attend traditional
residential college programs or weekday, full-
time programs due to normal life circumstances:
• Working fulltime or part-time.
• Family responsibilities.
• Schedules cannot accommodate traditional full-time
undergraduate programs.
If this is you, then…
•The Alfred University program might be a
good fit, but…
•There are
trade-offs.
The Trade-Offs for Convenience and Affordability
• Students must take all the credits required for the bachelor’s
degree in their area.
• Therefore, there is no possibility of reducing the required
credits with additional courses from SUNY Orange.
• There is very limited, if any, choice in electives.
• Therefore, students have to take whatever electives are
offered in a particular semester, even if they are similar to
courses already completed at SUNY Orange.

Editor's Notes

  1. Jay, On an earlier slide it says Social Welfare Institutions OR Social Psychology. Here it looks like they have to take both.
  2. Jay, I don’t know what that last bullet point means. Maybe a student is all set up to work with the Corning police and starts in December and is taking CRIM 470 in the spring semester. I will be the academic supervisor for the students in this course and will need to keep track of them. If they start too early and without the proper paperwork in place it can pose problems. I will write something very specific about how this process works.
