1. What Makes a Top University? Professor Janice Kay Chair, 1994 Group’s Student Experience Policy Group Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Exeter
No surprises in the government’s budget. We expected the Higher Education budget would be cut and there was nothing to suggest this will not be the case. The Institute for Fiscal Studies predicts a 33% cut for HE by 2014-15. Coupled with the increase in VAT, this will mean difficult times for many universities. The good news is that we are as well placed as any university to weather the cuts, firstly because we have reduced our reliance on public funding (now less than a third of our income); secondly, because the University is financially well managed and is generating a surplus; and thirdly, because we have planned for this eventuality and already removed costs through the Creating Value initiative. We expect to continue with our development plans and to grow turnover by another £20m in 2010-11. Lord Browne review – Pay and Pensions -
